Steve Levy is pushing a new law that would limit the amount of unused sick time that non-union workers can cash out upon retirement.
I also hear he is trying to expand that to the Management portion of the PD (Dep. Insp. and above) and eventually for everyone.
Just curious as to what that would do to the upper ranks in the PD. If people were smart they would retire before that came into effect, and anyone holding the rank of Captain should not ever want to get promoted any higher.
What is everyone's thoughts on this proposal?
Never happen to the union. Just another example of the current admin chasing its own tail.

As a taxpayer who believes you PD's are all paid too much anyway - I say go for it and hope the people in charge do limit the amount of payment for you. I also hope you know how lucky you are to be a PD here in suffolk and making the salary you currently make. As a teacher and a taxpayer I am somewhat offended by your high salaries and your perks. I too am a union member but lets face it - you guys are over the top a bit.
Just one question there teacher. At midnight on New Years eve, Where were you? With your family probably. Well, I was working. That should be worth some extra cash, No? Yes, I chose this job, well then I should be able to enjoy it's perks as well, such as earning decent pay. By the way, police officers pay taxes as well, so stop complaining and enjoy your Christmas week off with your family and be thankful that you have a good job as well.

For the amount of time you work, you make more than suffolk cops. What about school taxes? Thanks to your high pay, we have to suffer paying those taxes. Why not take a pay cut so I don't have to pay such a high tax bill? I didn't think so. Enjoy the summer and holidays off and the high pay, and please stop complaining.
The MTA contract was just the beginning. Enjoy having to pay for your health benefits, like the rest of the world.

how about no, big difference between us and them?? A strong union, and binding arbitration, just wait until the next contract and see what this gas/energy crisis does for us, 5% a year minimum.

So you are offended, so what? nothing you can do about it but troll anonymously If you were actually a teacher and not a sh!t stirring troll, you'd keep your mouth shut, you are so perky you make Brittney spears look saggy. I certainly don't think the PD is paid too much. However, the sick time payout may be stretching it a bit.
Sick is for when you are sick... stay home, get better and come back to work... that all. And if your a guy who plays it up way too often... well, I'm sure there are jobs within the dept. you can be sent over to (and pass you on other jobs, Sgt., Det. etc.)
There are enough days off throughout the year (VC, PL), and shouldn’t be an allotment of sick days. Now, before someone says - hey, what if someone has cancer, surgery etc., and needs to be out for a while.. they have to use accumulated days!!
My answer – just go on disability like everyone else.

Sicktime payout is a NEGOTIATED item. We gave up something, or things to get it. If we were to give up the sicktime payout we would negotiate something else in return. Trust me when I tell you we would want something BIG in return. We won't just give it away.

besides we dont do give backs thats why we have binding arbitration. As soon as the county denies our 1st proposal, we go straight to the arbitration board. We will never do give backs, the days of 8% raises per annum may be over, but we will never lose what we won.

My Question: What was given up to get the sick time payout?
I understand it is negotiated...and how the process works. I also don't blame you for not willing to give it away. But as a taxpayer, I believe this is something that just isn't right. And believe me, I think PO's should make over 100K.
Moreover, I know from personal experience that a PO's job affects their lives 24/7. You cannot witness a terrible car accident where a young child is killed, punch the clock at the end of the shift, and forget about it. Making over 100K is easily justifiable for having to work with terrible people and witnessing some of the worse things that happen in this world.
However, to cash in unused sick time really makes no sense at all. You have the 401k (or 403, 457, whatever the PD plan is), the guaranteed pension and everything else. You really can't lose your job for non-performance... Therefore, I believe the payout is excessive.
Lastly - Ok Jeff? LOL.. . That’s a good one.
What was given up? The ability for a p.o. to take off a additional 15 days a year, for other p.o.s to work a additional 15 days of overtime. The County is the one who made out like bandits on this one. If every p.o. took all his/her sick time every year, and had to be replaced on o/t you would be paying 2.5 x a days salary for the p.o. to be replaced. My salary to stay home, and the time and a half to replace me.
Instead the county banks the day and the same 15 days are given back to us at 1/2 the pay. So a days pay becomes 1/2 the days pay. Then the amount of days are capped, ask some 20+ year vets how many days they have they wont see because they are at their cap, many will eat 30-40 days. So the county takes my sick time pay and does whatever it wants with it, invests it wisely(yeah right) or uses it to pay debt or whatever, and when I retire I get .50 on the dollar.
You want to switch it? I think its a system that works fairly well for both sides.

Well-articulated point... I see what your saying.
Thanks.
