As a chief I have to give you an official KISS THE D I C K on that one.
As stated above it is a second full time job. I am not crying about it because it is what I signed up for, but would you honestly expect me to own another vehicle for eight years that I would only use once or twice a year when I go away on a two hour drive?
THis is not a blatant misuse of taxpayer money either. What, a little tire wear? mabey a free tank of gas? This is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of money laid out for petty expenses over eight years.
Could you imagine committing to anything for eight years with little or no compensation in return? Yeah, the admiration of my firefighters and EMT's is very rewarding and that is why I continue to be the best that I can be at what I do, but it does nothing for my mortgage company or the other bill collectors. I am glad that I work for a great group of commissioners that allow me to use the vehicle on a limited basis as long as I ask their permission and I do not abuse the privelege.
In closing, pull up your panties, brush yourself off and go complain somewhere else because I am sure that you find little support for your argument here.
Little or no compensation???
What building did you fall off of and how hard did you hit your head????
You still jumping off the roof tops instead of using the ladder???
Let's see...Insurance coverage...Workers Comp benefits...Oh, yeah...That monthly pension for time served...and what else...Oh...There's that property tax break.
And there's other thing that your helmut's been too tight to realize, too...That you are paying for it...And that it comes right out of each and every members pocket, too.

For those who have seen the Earth from space, and for the hundreds and perhaps thousands more who will, the experience most certainly changes your perspective. The things that we share in our world are far more valuable than those which divide us.
- Donald Williams
Know that although in the eternal scheme of things you are small, you are also unique and irreplaceable, as are all your fellow humans everywhere in the world.
- Margaret Laurence
It means a great deal to those who are oppressed to know that they are not alone. And never let anyone tell you that what you are doing is insignificant.
- Bishop Desmond Tutu
An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
- Mohandas K. Gandhi
The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. His heart withers if it does not answer another heart. His mind shrinks away if he hears only the echoes of his own thoughts and finds no other inspiration.
- Pearl S. Buck
History does nothing; it does not possess immense riches, it does not fight battles. It is men, real, living, who do all this.
- Karl Marx
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
-Douglas Adams
Every human heart is human.
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The oneness of human beings is the basic ethical thread that holds us together.
- Muhammad Yunus
Every man is more than just himself; he also represents the unique, the very special and always significant and remarkable point at which the world's phenomena intersect, only once in this way, and never again.
- Herman Hesse
If we all tired to make other people’s paths easy, our own feet would have a smooth even place to walk on.
- Myrtle Reed, American writer
A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.
- Buddha, Indian mystic and founder of Buddhism
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

Another asshole puts his two cents in...
What insurance coverage let me know what department has health insurance I'll join them
Workers comp. of course there is you fucking idiot.. If we get hurt volunteering our time is it rights that we are out of work due to an injury while volunteering with no pay coming in.
Monthly pension --- yeah you got me on that one, lets see after serving 40 active years (yes there is a mandated requiremnet on what you have to make in order to receive the service award) when I turn 65 I will receive the maximum monthly payment of $800. I wonder what that will buy me in 2036 maybe a gallon of gas.
And only members that own a house get the very small discount.
And yes every member that receive a benifit is also paying for it
public screwed

Also neglected to mention the stipend that 99% of the chiefs get, also failed to mention that most fire departments defraud the tax payers and government by not presenting a 1099 for the vehicle use and the stipend they get and YES it is the law to declare this TRUST me on this I didn’t declare it not knowing it had to be done and when audited was forced to pay back taxes on it.BTW, if you do not believe it contact your local IRS they will straighten you out on the facts

Put that in perspective. It's about 1/2 of what Social Security pays a typical retiree. To speak of $800.00 a month like it's chickenscratch, you must be stealing thousands. It's a signifigant sum that will make the difference between retiring to Florida or retiring to Mexico. And the fact is, the system was set up to attract more volunteers and it has not attracted a single one. So it's an unnecessary expense on the taxpayers.
Onto the Chief's vehicles, and now let's throw in about 2-4 assistant chiefs who suddenly need them too, and oh how about the ambulance chiefs and assistant ambulance chiefs? Hey they need brand new 4x4s too right? See how many are used daily as commuter cars into NYC? HUNDREDS. That's not "a tank of gas now and then" that's a minimum 70.00 weekly (each) in gas alone, not to mention the depreciation - after 5 years the trucks have 120,000 miles instead of 15,000 miles. Loss of what, 15 grand?
And only members that own a house get the very small discount.
10% is 10%. And don't think that now the discount has been implemented there won't be requests to up that figure now that your greedy foot is in the door.
And yes every member that receive a benifit is also paying for it
But not their fair share of ALL of it. You want to volunteer? FINE. I think it's a great thing to do and I thank you very much. But volunteering for the fire department has morphed into something entirely different that bares little to no resemblance to "giving without measure, with no thought or request for compensation."
At the very least, stop calling yourselves volunteers, it's an insult to those who really do.

.Show me on paper that it has not attracted a SINGLE member. And as far as I know it was set up to RETAIN members which it most definitly has.
Dont talk about my greedy foot my house is in my wife's name so we do not get the tax break
Bullshit why dont you join and find out how much time we put in VOLUNTEERING. Sure there are some bad apples and definitly some departments that need to be looked into closely but to bunch us all into one catagory is unfair. My family alone has volunteering in the fire department since the early 1900's.
Oh and by the way my department gives out 1099's when you do any work or collect and money from the department.

I find your reply to be insulting at the very least. I AM a volunteer. I am an officer in a department. I not only give my time but I give my own hard earned money as well. It is not unusual for me to lay out to buy food or drinks for the members of my company. Why? Because some have just come to drill from work and have not had the time to get dinner but want to be there to practice making my town safer. Or let me lay out for some ice creams or sodas after a bs call in 90 degree heat where we stuff ourselves in to a truck with full gear on. Do I come after you Mr/Mrs Taxpayer for that money? No. Because I am that taxpayer. I own my home and pay ridiculously high taxes every year like everyone else. It's okay that my school taxes increased 15% last year but you complain that i got a 10% reduction. The net is that I still increased 5%. Or how about my son and daughter who also volunteer? You get 3 for the price of one. There is no break for them. Oh wait my kid who is working through college gets less sleep because of 3am nonsense taxicab/ambulance calls. Please don't insult my family of VOLUNTEERS. Because that's what we do. The 800 dollars I saved for the year in property taxes doesn't nearly measure up to the amount of time i could have worked an extra part time job. Do you know why my family and I do it? Because you won't! Let me know when we can catch a breather and you got it all under control.

Why is it that "volunteers" complain about doing what they signed up to do and use those complaints to justify perks or compensation? Don't like getting up at 3 AM for calls.. don't join. Don't like going to drills or meetings right after work.. don't join. If your kid really needs his sleep.. tell him not to join. While we are at it, for those chiefs out there who insist on driving their cars EVERYWHERE...if don't like all the paper work, runs, bullshit, etc... don't become chief. It never ceases to amaze me how you guys "volunteer" but then bitch about doing what you "stepped up" to do. Stop sounding off about how heroic you are in volunteering your time to me but then demand that I pay for food, beer, trips, dinners, race cars, scholarships, tax rebates, health care etc etc in appreciation... You guys distort the term "volunteer." If you were true volunteers you would go and do what you have to do and shut the fuck up instead of constantly throwing it in the taxpayers face about how appreciative we should be

No one threw anything in anyone's face. You were the one complaining. Like I said at the end of my statement .."Do you know why my family and I do it? Because you won't! Let me know when we can catch a breather and you got it all under control." . Again I am just going to call you out....Step up and help. Keep your "perks". I was doing this for how long without any? Please educate yourself before you throw stones. My department doesn't have a racing team. I also think they are a waste of time but you will lump every department in the volunteer service because you have nothing else to hang on to. Trips? Yea ok. I have yet to get one of those. Scholarships? Why not. You can get one for every other thing in this world. Go Google them. You would not believe how many people receive assistance for college for any given reason INCLUDING race religion and gender. And believe me the ones around won't cover books in most cases. Health care? What Health care? Last I checked that was coming out of my paycheck. Your arguments are weak and petty. You try to take a very minute percentage of things and build it in to a case to suit your needs. Your skin is mostly transparent. It is obvious that you are most likely a paid firefighter from the city that wants to lose the commute and work out here. You are fooling no one. Your agenda is very clear. But keep on complaining about the vollie service. Last I checked it is all you got.

Did you read your own post...? You were complaining about runs and lack of sleep and lack of time to get a second job... all the while extolling on how virtuous you and your family are for volunteering. A statement like " We volunteer because you won't.." sounds like throwing that fact in people's faces. Why is it that you never see people who volunteer in soups kitchens, churches, little leagues, shelters or after school programs constantly going around pounding their chest and proclaiming how noble they are and demand that society show them do appreciation.
Two weeks ago my neighbor had a small stove fire in her kitchen, she called 911 and then knocked on my door. I went over and put it out with her kitchen extinguisher.. and then we waited and waited and waited. Finally, 14 minutes after she called, an engine showed up... Your vollie service is all I got??... not really, thank God I have good insurance.

Yes I did read my own post. It was never a complaint it was an answer to your whining. Why don't we see others 'extolling" as you call it? Because people who do nothing like you come on here and complain about vollies because either you were tossed out of a fire service or you are a paid person who wants to see it turned paid so you can have the best of both worlds. Plain and simple. After I have answered and shot down every one of your points you try to turn the tables. Sorry pal it hasn't worked yet. And judging by the way you waited and waited and waited as you put it after dialing 911 leads me to believe that you are basically full of horse hockey. A cop would have been there within minutes as well as some other form of first responder. Let me know where to send the medal you deserve for using your neighbors extinguisher. I am sure they were in such a panic they didn't use it themselves. Please. I am a little tired so try reading me another one of your bed time stories. Oh I know you performed cpr on the other neighbor for 29 minutes by yourself while waiting for an ambulance right? I am sure your next response will be to curse me or call one of my female family members a name. I have seen you run your lines around many of these threads already. I am now in firm belief that you are in fact a paid troll. Have a great day and be safe....
