2 ex-fire chiefs and life-long West Hempstead residents will face off next week for the position of fire commissioner.

On Dec. 13, residents in the West Hempstead fire district will decide whether incumbent Ronald Magarie will serve on the board of commissioners for a third term or if his challenger, Bill D’Alessandro, will take the seat. (Polls will be open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the West Hempstead fire house for all registered voters living within the district.)

Magarie , 54, and D’Alessandro, 52, have much in common. Both are natives of West Hempstead who graduated from West Hempstead High School, 1975 and 1977, respectively. They each have more than 30 years of service with the West Hempstead fire department and have held the position of chief. And while both are married, neither one has children, pointing out that this gives them plenty of time to dedicate to serving their communities.

To learn more about what sets them apart though, their experience and their views on how to run the West Hempstead fire district, Patch recently spoke one-on-one with each candidate. Here's what we learned.

Occupation: Retired; Managed an auto body shop for 25 years and worked for Nassau County Department of Public Works.

He was 1 of 2 people working there 1 was the owner and he was the other person who was he managing??...When you dont have a resume ...don't make things up to impress people...and lets not talk about the rerason he left his county position... Disability pension.....

As member of the Department looking from the inside out it looks like Billy has alot of enemies that are comming out at election time. He has always been a person who taks down and always know better than everyone else. Not a way to be with a group of "brothers". Hopefully it will reflect at the voting machines. The irony is when you sue your District then run for a seat on the District Board.

i just woke up, and realized i was having a bad dream. Billy (the joke ) D'allasandro is running for commissioner ??? how can that be i thought " he never cared about me the tasxpayer as he sued my beloved fire district. The legal bills cost's many thousand's of dollars . it cant be run for commissioner ??

hopefully the taxpayers and the members of the department will make the right choice. being a person on a board that makes decisions for the betterment of the community (taxpayers and the department is not always easy). many times decisions that have to be made are not easy ,but remember the district is a business and your safeguarding the communities taxdollars. the right and prudent decisions must be made and it looks like ronald magarie has balanced both.

Votes are what counts and Bill lost by a 3-1 margin. Thank God for the community and the Fire Department it would have been a disaster. Rumor has it that some of his family members in the community we seen putting up Ron Magarie for Commissioner signs and taking his down .
