Fuck race cars, does nothing for the fire service. Spend the money training becasue you sure don't get enough from the academy. NYS Fire Fighter 1 course. 107 hours of classroom and hands on. Sorry to say but drill team racing is A WASTE OF MONEY. Does it build camaraderie? Sure it does. Does it draw in new members? Probably, but the amount of money it cost to purchase and maintain B,C and transport trucks outweighs any argument that anyone has to keep them running. To say that its training is a joke. I love drill team racing its a lot of fun, but it can't be put on the taxpayers to run it. Drill team racing is just one of the many waste of money in the volunteer fire service and in my opinion the biggest waste.Yes I am a current member of the fire service.

Another thing you forgot to mention about racing.....the cost of insurance. I would love to know what every depts budget line is for their racing team.

What needs to happen is what every department/commissioner would hate to see happen.....CONSOLIDATION. Remember the newsday series a couple of years ago? Newsday brought out some good points.

1.Long island has more fire apparatus then FDNY,LA and Chicago fire departments COMBINED.

2. Over 100 plus departments on LI with majority having heavy rescue apparatus. How many does FDNY have? FIVE. Thats 5 heavy rescue apparatus for the all 5 boroughs.

3. Drill team racing as already mentioned.
