This morning I was driving to work on the LIE when 30 blew past me doing about 83mph in his department truck. Chief slow the fuck down with something that I pay for and stop using the truck to drive to work. Would you be able to respond from your job in a timley manner or are you just about raping us taxpayers.

I love coming on here and reading all of you bitches complaining about volunteer fire chiefs driving the fire district's chief vehicles here and there. What about all of the NYC employees driving around Long Island in their official NYC take-home vehicles. I thought they are only supposed to be for transportation to-and-from their place of work? I have a NYC Buildings employee living near me and I see them driving their issued vehicle all over the place with the kiddies when they are not working. But I guess that's a different story because they are getting paid. A fire chief should not be driving like an asshole though, especially because they stick out like sore-thumbs in those red trucks.

And for all of those on here who are replying to the bitches complaining, saying "getting a free car and gas is just one of the perks" you are equally as ignorant.

I don't understand why people complain about marked vehicles leaving the district as commuter cars, but it is ok for Districts like West Islip with their black unmarked suburbans running all over this island on personal business. Official plates no other markings. But that's ok, because Commissioners using them are elected by the public?

What are you a fucking radar gun, 83 mph. Your good, maybe you should see if the sheriffs office could use you to read what other cars speeds are. Tell you what, if I'm not on scene and I'm at work and something happens, guess whos ass is in trouble, mine so as long as that could happen I will bring my truck to work. Do some research before you open your mouth, now i will drive faster.

I just read this thread and I'm not going to knock anyone. Being a chief myself I just want to put this idea out there to defend all of us. Yes, chiefs often drive their vehicles to work. Some work further than others. HOWEVER, only this morning while on my way home from work my department was activated with a heavy rescue as I was just re-entering my district. (I work about 10-15 minutes away from my district depending on traffic) Instead of passing the motor vehicle accident and going home to get my chief's vehicle about 5 minutes away, plus 5 minutes back, I was able to respond directly to the scene in under 2 minutes and begin sizing up and stabilizing the most critical patient while my apparatus got on the road. I don't really care if they are driving to westchester, NYC, Nassau, or part of Suffolk East or West of their department. What you really need to ask yourself is if they can respond to your call for help 5 minutes sooner and hook up that AED that much sooner, or crawl into your house and pull out your family member who is trapped by fire a little sooner, just in time to save their life who really cares where their truck was driving home from 10, 30, 50, 60, or even 90 minutes ago? What matters is it got there when it got there. Do they respond into a call every time they are on their way home from work? No of course not but the time that they do and they save a life... does the money spent on their gas for a year really compare?

Break it down... if they drive an SUV 5 days a week to the city that would be roughly 200 dollars a week in gas... (that is a HIGH estimate) multiply that by 52 weeks. You're talking 10,400 dollars a year in gas. THAT IS AN EXTREMELY HIGH ESTIMATE.

A single chief in FDNY I'm sure makes well over 150K/year.
A volunteer chief makes no pay. However, I can't speak for Centereach or any other department but I know the chief and every assistant in my department puts in at least 30+ hours a week towards meetings, trainings, and department administration as well as responding to alarms. I'd say that more than offsets the 10,000 or less that the chief's vehicle uses in gas to commute where ever they may go.

Addressing the over the speed limit... thats their own issue. Let me put it to you this way though... let he who is without sin cast the first stone. An average speed on the LIE is between 70-80 MPH. You state 83 MPH... ok... You have no idea why he was doing that. We are all held to a higher standard being chiefs but that chief driving is the same as anyone else. Maybe he is running a little late for work so he is touching the pedal a little harder. Maybe he has a rational reason to be going a little faster. He isn't going 90+. Are you going to honestly say that you haven't seen Joe Citizen speeding into work or home from work on a daily basis? Have you never been speeding before?

I need to bounce back to this since it just popped into my head. Those chiefs that drive wherever to go to work with their chiefs truck.. ask any one of them if they stop for an MVA on the road while they are going to work. I can guarantee you that 10 out of 10 that you ask will say that they would and have stopped to render aid in another district while going to or from work. ALSO, how do you know that person going 83 isn't going that speed now because they left for work on time but after spending 20 minutes at a scene helping a neighbor cut someone out of a car now they need to step it up a little to get to work on time. You just never know so before you judge make sure you're informed. Does abuse happen? I'm sure it does... but don't think every chief who is driving on the expressway is abusing a priviledge and please don't jam on your breaks in front of me. That wouldn't be nice.

Here's a fact. One of the Chiefs(if there's more than one) in Sound Beach drives like a fucking lunatic down my father in law's block all the time(he lives on another block at the end of my father in law's block), and my children spend a lot of time over there. It's a very narrow street with a lot of hills and blind spots. I have no problem with a chief taking his car to and from work no matter how far, or with doing 80 on the LIE(who doesn't do 80 on the LIE?). But driving like A.J. Foyt on a quiet residential street, all the time, is patently unacceptable, dangerous, and needs to stop.

In regard to the last post about the chief in Sound Beach. I can't vouch for everyone. Just myself and my assistants. Just like any organization, job, profession... whenever you have so many people you're bound to have a couple of idiots. Obviously I don't agree with that either. That just comes down to individual. I appreciate that you agree with my earlier post about chiefs using their vehicles. That is something that should be addressed either RESPECTFULLY face to face or if not fixed like that maybe brought to the attention of the individual district.
Let me tell you though, if you maybe go to the Chief's home or flag him down as he passes through and RESPECTFULLY air your concern. I'm sure you'll be satisfied with the result. To get into the Chief's ranks MOST chiefs need to be pretty good, community oriented people. Just don't flag him down and say "hey A$$hole, what the hell are you thinking? do you use your head? There are kids in this neighborhood" I can guarantee that conversation won't go the way you want it to go.

Hard to flag a guy down doing 70 in a 15. I find it ironic that you are imploring me to treat this man "RESPECTFULLY" when he clearly has no respect for the safety of the people in his neighborhood.

Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm just saying that it doesn't work well in any situation to come at someone loudly and cursing. It starts everything off on a harsh note. You can handle it however you would like. Maybe flagging him down isn't right then. You obviously know where he lives though. Give that a shot. No one including myself would appreciate a resident coming at me cursing and yelling. I like to believe I am pretty level headed but even myself, I would tend to care less about what you're saying if you didn't at least approach me respectfully and as a man first. I don't know any SB chiefs. But I think they should listen to a voice of reason. Not like what you're bringing up isn't a sensible request. Good Luck.

I never said I was going to yell and curse. Just that it's hard to flag down someone travelling at a hellacious speed down a residential street.

Well good luck with that. I'm sure he'll listen to the voice of reason if you can catch up to him. I wasn't saying you would but you'd be surprised how many people people skip the diplomatic approach and go straight to screaming.
