Does anyone know how much it costs to buy a new Nassau County PD ambulance? Not the equipment or supplies, just the vehicle. Thank you for the information.

Too Much

For what they spend, they should buy busses with drivers & stop using cops to drive them around

Probably the same or cheaper than it costs to purchase one for the FD. NCPD remounts most boxes onto new chassis, so there is some savings there. Plus, they tend to purchase in lots of 3-5 or more, so there may be some kind of bulk discount there. Some old units are kept in service as spares or relegated to other duties. Not sure what they do with the old chassis though, as far as trade-in, recommissioning in other capacity, or outright sale.

Ambulances usually costs ~$165k-$210k depending on how they're equipped. Some districts, such as Melville, have larger ambulances that can transport multiple patients. Those I presume cost more.

It’s much cheaper. Depending on the chassis you choose, it can be as little as 60,000 per. With that comes all new warranties, for the body, paint, wiring, etc… For any department it is the fiscally responsible thing to do.

Nothing. It sits in the yard at Bethpage and they pick parts off it until it's usefulness as a parts vehicle is up, and then they sell it as scrap at auction. They are totally unusable as vehicles by the time they leave Nassau counties ownership.
Nassau county currently uses every vehicle it has until it is wrecked or so far annihilated that it can no longer run and then it is kept around for a few years for parts. They haven't sold a vehicle (even a crown vic) that has look good or ran decent in a long time.

In regards to the original question, I am not sure, but like previously stated, most of the ambulances are just re-framed with old boxes. The new Fords that you see are all gas V10's and were bought with a federal grant in an initiative to "go green". They were told to explore something other then the current diesel fleet for various "green" reasons...

About to cost less in Lake Success = NCPD EAB to be replaced by North Shore by 2012

wont cost any less in lake success or in RVC..

residents still pay the PD tax that covers ambulances
and they also pay the fire tax to MLFD that covers ambulances

So now paying 3 different taxes to cover ambulance service

Yes they will pay the 'headquarters' tax - that covers more than just ambulances

MLFD will collect their share too - mostly for fire coverage. ML Ambulances stopped taking calls from 911 a few years back. They show if you call their disp #, assuming they get out.

There is no North Shore tax. They bill insurance co's for transports. If you have health insurance, you already paid for this; if not, Medicare picks it up.

Better question is why your 'Headquarters Tax' covers ambulances, yet when you use one, you also get a bill, for a service funded by your tax $$
