08/11/05) MINEOLA - Nassau Republicans are calling for a top aide to County Executive Tom Suozzi to step down.
Minority Leader Peter Schmitt (R-Massapequa) believes Chief Deputy County Executive Anthony Cancellieri should be put on a leave of absence for his role in a records scandal. Schmitt claims Cancellieri signed time sheets for former Deputy County Executive Michael Klein. Republicans say on the day in question, Klein was not working for the county, but in Albany doing political business for Tom Suozzi’s campaign committee.
The Nassau County district attorney’s office is investigating payroll irregularities in the Suozzi administration. Former Parks Clerk Shomwa Shampapande was arrested Wednesday and accused of collecting $12,000 for work he never completed.
