Pay Hike for the Jail
08-04-2005, 09:12 AM
Maybe that will hit $25 million in a year ot two. Suozzi had to do it, as Cancelleri cut a deal thru David Green with the Union.

We're back to Gulottaland, giving away the store. Horrible contract for the county, and it might open the door for police and other unions. Can't anyone manage this place? How did NIFA allow this to happen????

that article in newsday is 100% bogus. not only did the membership not yet vote, but negotiations are still going on.
$1000 bux a year

how many correction officers make 100000 a year? shocking? ask Mike Adams?

OK, I am quitting the practice of law; I'm going to become a Nassau County C.O., take all the O.T. available, take the promotional exams and with the pension and benefits package, I'll be doing way better than the lowly practice of law. No muss, no fuss.
If Correction Officers got the contract they did, this will make the cops argue they are entitled to even more! Thank goodness we don't have a paid fire department!! Pretty soon, only the cops and C.O.s will be able to afford to live here! Somewhere along the way, Long Island became Wrong Island. I am moving back to Queens!!

Corrections Officers have it made with OT. IM quitting my job tomorrow. Suozzi should quit his since he is only making $108,000 bux a year or thereabouts.
Levy can control costs

You work the holidays. Better yet, leave dinner on Thanksgiving or Christmas to get readyto work a midnight. You work weekends. You work a 8-4 one week and 4-12 the next...oh wait...you wanna make a hundred grand. Try 4pm till 8am, then 8am till 12am the following week. All that time dealing with the scum of the earth in dank decreped buildings. You wanna work...take the test...its an open competetive exam.

If memory serves me, and it may not isn't it true that gulotta drafted the last contract that gave away to the store (to shoa); but it passed by the dem. legislature and the republicans backed away at the last minute (in a final salute to T.G.)? WHO IS running and/or RUINING this county. I am all for fair raises, especially for civil servants, but give ME a BREAK, this is out of control

How is it out of control? Correction officers dont get top pay until after 10 years of service...not 5 or 6 like cops. Better to pay someone o.t. than hire more and pay salary benefits.

first of all top pay is at 11 years, and this contract sucks! overtime has been reduced to just about nothing. they say it's cheaper for the county to pay overtime than to hire new officers?? than why the hell are there 2 new classes and another one on the way? u gotta be an a-hole to take this job now. don't get me wrong, the job's a joke, but the money just isnt what it used to be in regards to overtime, unless u are a kiss ass who has a connection with someone.

The union is right, they wanted more C/O 's hired now we complain? I want a good salary without 1000 hrs of OT. bigger membership is better for us

NYPD got 4% a year in their last contract. so 2.5 to 3.5 is fair. it takes alot to make 100k like missing your kids ballgames, family events holidays working all different shifts the problem with the jail is the idiots who are running it

first of all, NYPD getting 4% is an insult to that department. they deserve a lot more than that! what people don't seem to realize is that if u have a family & a house, u need at leat $100k-$120k to survive on long island.

Yeah, you need to make that much $$ on LI in order to pay the cops, corrections officers, and teachers.

ot pay is always cheaper than paying new full time employees, especially when only 500 people take the test for this monkey dung job. most people aspire to work in fancy offices with pretty secretaries. no one wants this job, so pay up for the ones who do work it! either that or you take the job and make the ot go away. or you can hit the lottery and get the PD job. talk about bennies!
yada! yada! yada!

Perpetual overtime is just one sign of the incompetence of County management. According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, overtime should only be used in extraordinary circumstances. Acts of God, Nature or catastrophes like occurred on 9/11. Otherwise, it is being used to the detriment of the American worker.
If there is built-in overtime, the jail should fire the planners and managers.
Cross-train CO’s to fill in!
This abuse is criminal!

Why would he bash this contract if he voted for it on the board? I heard it was a unanimous vote. Was he even at that board meeting? I heard that Duer wasn't there also!! That is outrageous! Well, if you would like to leave law, and work in a jail, with a population that is the dreeds of society, with TB, AIDS, HEPA,B,&C, and all other types, work/live in that same area, breathe the same "recycled air", be ready at the drop of a hat to be envolved it use of force, have these same persons throw their piss and shit on you, get spit in the face by them, and then at the end of your shift(8,12,or 16 hrs) go home to the wife and kids with a smile on your face, BE MY GUEST, take the test, it is open to all, but your first three years here, you will be able to collect food stamp if you like, with a salary of $25,000, and then the following 2-3 years be somewhere just above that level.I dont remeber the last time we held court hearing on thanksgiving, or Chrsitmas, or at 2:00 am, that you had to be at. Or the last time you worked CPR on someone who tried to kill him/herself, or been involved in a Use of Force with 2,4,8,12 person gang fight between MS-13, and the Bloods, or the Crips, or Latin kings etc, etc, etc,. YOU fail to realize, A CORRECTION OFFICER, works in the lowest level of society, all the scumbags that YOU guys lock away for the "good"citizens of Nassau County, WELL THEY DONT JUST DISAPPEAR into thin area, Shitheads like the gang members that killed the Lynbrook father, they have to live somewhere, well for about the last 2 1/2 years, while going to trial, he lives at 100 Carmen Avenue, and he is still here, till he get sent upstate. NOW if you want to leave all your nice suits, and power lunches, and golf with your fellow lawyers, for this, GO FOR IT, and if you want to leave Long Island, TAKE THE LIE HEADING WEST!!!! Don't talk about something that you know nothing about!!!!!!

I agree witht the EM Hack. I too, have been here about 2 full decades, and have seen it all. It amazes me that people in this time and age still think of the "jail" as they call it, as a holding tank for drunks. The correctional center houses the shoplifter to the killer. I will gladly switch positions with the lawyer. You can have my job, and I will watch as you get involved in a use of force, and then get grilled on why you had to use it. Everyone thinks that the jail is club getaway, and club moneymaker. I applaud all of the men and women who made the sacrifice of working a half hour after their tour, let alone a 16. We all forgot to mention the average age a C/O lives too.
