Who's gonna win this one? Im new to this.
Massapequa Voterem

Well, the Republicans try and spin this into a sure win for Carman but no one really knows what will happen on election day.
Here are the facts: In 2001, Mejias lost by approx. 400 votes. Since then the district was re-drawn to give this district more Democratic PERFORMING areas. In other words, with these new lines, Mejias would have won in 2001 by about 1,600 votes.
In fairness, Republicans will say that would have been against a crappy Legislator (Pontillo) and Mejias would have had Suozzi's coattails, both of which dont exist in 2003. They say Carman is well known and respected. I live in N. Massapequa and honestly was not familiar with the name before this year, but I could easily be wrong.
On the Mejias plus side, we are going into November with the top Democrat Suozzi having big approval numbers. He is also about to get another bond upgrade for Nassau. This can't hurt Dems going into election day.
The only question is motivation to vote and turnout.
My objective take: It will be close.

Suozzi's presence will be felt, but his influence cuts both ways. Many democrats in the district feel badly done by the Suozzi redistricting.
It will be close, but if Carman can appeal to the Klassert democratic faction as well as his GOP base, he walks away with it.
Since they still feel screwed, don't put it past Klassert's disgruntled rank-and-file to cross party lines with the right incentive. They represented a third of the primary vote.

....so says the latest Nassau PBA poll. BUT, Republicans dont want democrats to conceed this one and put more $$ against Ciotti, which is REALLY the race to watch. Meijas came close last time because he "wasn't Pontillo".To think Dour Dave Meijas could beat Charismatic Greg Carmen is hillarious!

If the Dems could figure a way to get the off year turnout to the polls De Angelis could pull it off .
Mejias will be much tougher.
Just look at the enrollment numbers.
Don't concentrate too much on 2001.
That was then ,this is now

The Town of Oyster Bay lost because Jacobs & Cty Exec cares more in having Mejias elected than other candidates. Where is Jacobs and the Cty Executive - where are they in supporting (not in words but in actual campaigning deeds) the other local candidates for TOB offices - NO WHERE!
Where is Jacobs and the Cty Exec in supporting the LD candidates throughout the county for those races where the potential Republican victory is great - it's the old story - when the chance of winning is slim to none -- let the candidates wither and die on the vine! Ask the candidates to run so you can have a full ticket - give them a pat on the back - give them a glimmer of hope and then pat then on the head - like a child - and shuffle them off to 'bed' until you need them once again to go through the humiliating campaign struggles they have endured. The Chair should show at least the glimmer of interest in their races - he should have the young dems out there promoting these candidates - the Cty Exec should be out there as well. Hey - here's something unique - why doesn't the Chairman get up early and instead of leaving his Woodbury home and traveling to his office only a few miles away - take a trip to the railroad stations and hand out literature. Or is that asking to much?

I saw the orange road work signs on Hempstead Turnpike today announcing "Carmen Ave. Lane Closures"
and "Road Work on Carmen Ave."
Looks like the road crews aren't gonna give Greg any free publicity by spellng his name correctly on the road that bears his forebears name... although it's not even in the district!
Yes, there is a typo on the orange road signs but the road crew on Hempstead Turnpike is trying to tell us something. I have it on good authority that some of them watched a tape of the TV debate between Carman and Mejias that will be broadcast on Channel 12 at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7th. After seeing Carman embarrass himself so badly, the road crew cleverly put up signs to annouce that Carman's election lane is closed and that he is desperately doing road work to improve his command of the English language and knowledge of county issues.

The light turnout(somewhere near 33%) and the poor Dem numbers in the TOH and TOB races will cinch this for Carman. Mejias cannot get Judy's % in the new TOB eds and the D vote will be far below '01 and '99.
Thanks largely to Murray and Venditto:
Carman 54 Mejias 46

The local Plainview area Dems are still putting Judy's signs up in the new LD so Dem voters are going to stare at the ballot and say "Where's Judy?" and "What the hell is a Mejesus?" and walk out without voting. Dave is cooked.

I stumbled onto the debate on Ch 12 between Carmen and Mejias. I'm a republican that will be for Carmen, but I have to admit that Mejias was on and Carmen was out to lunch. Did he prepare for that debate?

FYI: IN 2001, both of the above mentioned unions endorsed Fred Parola and a number of Legislators (Terry Butler and David Mejias). All lost.
Does anyone really think these union endorsements help. In the NCPD case, I actually think it hurts.

Well I am not sure who will win November 4th but I doubt either will win by a large margin let alone 1.200.
Mejias has had two years to do additional work in the district. He is now very well known and has a lot of crossover support in all areas. He has also worked the new areas of the district hard (Old Bethpage/Plainview and East Massapequa). He has a great shot.
Carman's plus is that his name is a familiar one in Farmingdale. Joe Mondello has a habit of trying to fool the voters by using a name well known in the community. He knows that swing voters often go by name recognition. This could work. Remember the way he took Angie Cullin out of the Receiver of Taxes position in the Town of Hempstead to run for the Council seat. It worked.
Either way, it will be close.
