10% off property taxes. That's REAL "hefty". And LOSAP; after 20yrs of service they get $20/month for each year they served. That's $400/mo. Wow, real "nice". And if a Police Officer lets ANYONE off the hook for driving drunk or speeding, that's the PO's fault for not doing his/her job.

Also when I joined nearly 30 years ago, none of those benefits existed. I joined to perform a service to the community. Those benefits were granted by that community as a way of thanking the volunteer departments. We did not have the IAFF fighting a battle for us gouging the taxpayers for every penny they could get like the career guys do. I didn't ask for those benefits, but if they are offered then of course we will take advantage of them.
Fact is I joined as a complete volunteer, and would do so still today. As opposed to the "fuck you pay me skel" that started this thread.

I'm heading to the beach last week, I pass the firehouse in Oceanside and there is a sign that says "Fund Drive in Progress" I proceed down Long Beach Road and as I stop for the light at Daly Blvd I am surrounded by firemen asking for money. This is in addition to the fund drive. Cut to 7 days later- same situation except when I get to Daily Blvd- I am surrounded by a bunch of old guys from a different fire department. The only thing that didn't happen this year- was I didn't get hit when I get to Long Beach (they are usually asking for donations)

Wow, I love these paid vs Vollie threads considering more than half the vollies on the Island are also on the job for the FDNY. I guess we can't all have a job where we pray to get some work so afterward we can pretend to have received an injury so we can go out paid for 2+weeks without using our vacation time.
