Oops! Islip GOP'er hails Bellone; says Angie will 'kill me'
Friday June 3, 2011 9:24 PM By Carl MacGowan
It was no surprise Friday when Democratic county-executive candidate Steve Bellone was lauded by his fellow Democratic town supervisors for his “green houses” initiatives in Babylon.
But something seemed off-kilter when Republican Islip Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt also sang Bellone’s praises, at a gathering of the Long Island Green Homes Consortium in Melville.
Bellone is running against GOP county Treasurer Angie Carpenter to succeed Democrat-turned-Republican Steve Levy.
After praising Bellone’s efforts to encourage energy-efficient houses, Weichbrodt stopped as if she’d committed a political faux pas.
“Am I the only Republican in the room?” she said to laughter. “Because Angie Carpenter is going to kill me for saying that.”
Suffolk GOP chairman John Jay LaValle was not immediately available for comment.
Weichbrodt, who was standing in for Democratic Islip Supervisor Phil Nolan, was indeed the rare Republican in the room. Six of the seven towns in the Green Homes Consortium are led by Democratic supervisors.
Smithtown also belongs to the consortium. But Supervisor Patrick Vecchio, a Republican, was a no-show.
