i agree its a joke
ambulance co saves lives
fire depts spend millions on unecessary trucks do they really need huge tower ladders, pumpers, rescue truck to reset an alarm panel which is 99% of their alarms
reality check 101
05-24-2011, 06:40 PM
FD's have larger budgets because of the increasing costs of fire protection. Apparatus, Turnout Gear, SCBA, Rescue Tools, Safety Equipment, Insurance Requirements, etc. It's not all about the call volume.

Maybe if Ambulance companies gave in and decided to become tax districts they too could hop on the money train and rob the tax payers the way that the fire departments do. On another ancient note NO each fire department does not need 4,5,6 or 7 engines and a ladder truck BUT you do need the long ladders that they get on long island for this simple reason. A ladder truck is not only used for height it is also used for distance. When you have a house setback say 40 feet from a street with grass between you can’t put a ladder on the lawn you must therefore set up on the street and REACH over the structure to fight the fire or get on the roof of said structure. What Long Island should do not that you will ever see it is get rid of the names of each independent fire and ems company and department and place the counties names on them and pool the equipment then would save a fortune NO you will never see it but O well. OK come cry now stay safe

If you put the county's name on all of the equipment how will I be able to claim that my firehouse is better than your firehouse?

I think that there are good points on both sides of the argument when it comes to the Fire Department and ambulance debate. However, ambulance service on a whole is still relatively behind in the amount of years they have been in service compared to Fire Departments. The structure of many current ambulance companies are as old as the system itself.
Ambulance companies up to fairly recent years have never been able to bill. It was tried some years ago with ambulance serives out east, but there was concerns over the manner in which the billing was being done and exactly where the monies were going after they were received.
Today, Port Jefferson Ambulance IS billing there patients and appears to be a working. They are billing patients that have insurances, and there is no bill for those that don't have insurance or are unable to pay. there is absolutely no difference in services for paying or non paying patients that they transport. Well done and my hats off to those people that have it up and running.
As for other Ambulance Compaines, they are just that, COMPANIES. most of them were formed years ago and have agreements with the towns and areas that they provide serive to for specific amounts. However, as the volume of patients have increased and the cost of providing those services have sky rocketed, the budgets allowcated for those services have not kept up with the increases. It is time for ALL ambulance companies to be allowed to do what has started in Port Jefferson, with ambulance services being allowed to bill. THe problems will arise with the towns and how the monies that they receive from billing will be used. Unfortunately if you throw money in front of them, it is more likely to go into a general fund rather than a dedicated fund that would and should be specific for ambulance services. This would give cofidence to residents and providers as well, and thus allow to see where short falls are in monies needed.
Fire departments are tax based, which allows them to collect tax monies from the residents for whom they provide service to. Unfortunately, Most, but not all fire departments tend to concentrate the major portions of there budget to the fire side rather than the EMS side for those Fire Departments that also provide ambulance service.
As for the equipment that departments need and what they in fact purchase, most people would probably agree that there department is pretty well equiped out on Long Island and probably don't need for much. However, as for those that claim waste, there is some truths to that argument as well.
Better oversight is needed in the Fire and EMS fields in general. With a country the is in a financial crisis of epic proportions, everyone needs to due there part in helping to not only control spending, but use it more wisely...
Enough said-

Yeah, it takes lots of work to throw speedy dry down at those MVAs. I would rather have the EMS crew who can treat my family member who is in shock and needs a fast ride to the ER. Most EMS transports are not serious but it takes quite a bit of training to know when someone is sick and when some one is not. That mom that just farted? GI bleed or bowel obstruction. Granny that burped? Anginal equivalent, MI or perforated ulcer. Think any hosemonkey can tell the difference?

But There are many times when the FD is needed for extraction and fire suppression. bet your band box can handle that.

I could care less what your bump and grind means. Most MVAs do not require extrication or fire suppression. Yes, there are those that do, but they are far and few between. I do appreciate the speedy dry and traffic control you guys provide while we take care of the people that need help though. You can put down EMS all you want but it's funny how quick you are to call us when you, one of your FFs or one of your family members needs help. No, my band aid box does not carry the jaws of life but can your truck defibrillate some whose heart has stopped, intubate a FF who was hurt in a fire and has an airway that is about to swell shut, give meds to someone having an allergic reaction that is about to stop breathing or give meds to someone who is having a heart attack? Keep up the great response to those automatic alarms, the community appreciates it.

Exactly. Firefighters can rip EMS all they want, but 80% of our work is EMS. That is the job that actually affects people's lives, and that is also the reason that most of the fund drive contributions happen. Everyone loves to look at the big red truck, but face the facts: fires are down, EMS runs are at an all-time high. EMS gets shit on by the FD at every turn, but in the end, EMS is the hardest-working branch of the fire service. Most alarms don't really require the FD. What do us firemen really do at a Carbon Monoxide alarm aside from open windows? EMS can save lives at that incident.

Obviously education, spell check and grammar check are not some of the things the Fire Real service does (at least in your case). No one here is saying that some FDs don't run EMS because obviously they do. The problem is they just use EMS to justify their big budgets and none of the money is given to EMS. So EMS does all of the work and the FD takes the money. The fire service has no place in EMS, just like the PD has no place in the fire service. EMS practices medicine and as such should be under the control (including budgeting) of a medical authority.
I appreciate the offer to watch you "real men" work. I often miss the one or two actual fires that happen each year because I am busy treating sick people and actually making a difference. In return for your offer, I invite you to come watch a medical alarm and see how a brain is actually used.

Thank you. As both a firefighter and EMT, I see both sides of the coin. As an EMT, I see myself and others in EMS make a real difference in people's lives every day. As a firefighter, I see people who don't give a damn about the community but just want to smash stuff under the excuse that the house is on fire or the car is already crashed. I think I am the only one in my department who doesn't make a mess in the front of my pants when there is a fire, because I actually realize that a house fire is when someone loses his possessions or his whole home, and not just a time to break some windows and look good for the TV cameras.
The only reason most people give to the Fund Drive is because the ambulance has transported them or someone that they knew. Nobody cares how much speedy dry you put down or how many dead batteries you discovered in CO detectors. Give EMS the respect it deserves. It makes the rest of us look good when in fact we don't deserve it.

I don't have time for a full response right now but you need to give up the hero complex. Once you are no longer a probie you will realize how moronic you sound. How dangerous is it responding to automatic alarms, which is what most fire alarms are? The most danger comes from the way buffs in FDs and EMS drive. Face it, more FFs and EMT/Medics are killed in accidents, responding to calls, every year than in their respective jobs. We all stand out in traffic on MVAs so we have the same risk there. In EMS, we risk exposure to HIV, Hepatitis, MRSA, VRE, etc on every call, just to name a few. We won't even mention the violent patients that we are required to transport and don't get help from PD with. Ever had a knife or gun pulled on you? I have, 3 times. Violence against health care workers, including EMS, is on the rise. Google it.

So after doing a little searching, I found the following statistics from the US Fire Administration:
In 2009, 90 fire fighters were killed on the job (volley and paid). Of those, on average 44% are from heart attacks, leaving us about 50 FFs. About 25% dies in MVAs, leaving about 28 FFs. 3% dies while involved in EMS related activities, leaving 25 FFs who die on the job from trauma, burns and asphixiation. According to USFA, there are 1,082,500 FFs in the US (volley and paid). So that gives us a true mortality rate of .00002%. That would hardly qualify as a dangerous job. Keep saving those foundations Iron Cross.

Who altered any stats? They are straight from the government's website with no alteration. Even though you will have trouble understanding anything more advanced than addition or anything else above the 1st grade level, here is a link to the federal website with the stats. If you need help understanding them, let me know, I will be more than happy to explain what percentages are. If you can provide contradicting evidence, I'd be more than happy to see it.

It's funny how you seem to forget why the FD and EMS exist. It is for the people. Explain to me why EMS does not belong at the scene of an MVA? The whole reason anyone is at the scene to to take care of the people that are hurt. As a FF (assuming you even are one), when was the last time you even touched a patient. The fire service has been so successful in it's mission (fire prevention and fire protection) that is has almost put itself out of business (that is a good thing). There is very little risk in being a FF anymore. There are very few actual fires and safety has been made paramount that there is little risk to the FFs. Hopefully once you are no long a probie you will lose your hero complex because it is pretty obvious that you are only in the fire service to stroke your own ego. Luckily for the real FFs (volley and paid) people like you don't last very long.
Suffolk County EMS is not the paradise you think it is. Like I said, I've had guns and knives pulled on me in Suffolk County and I know others that have also. We've all been hit, kicked, punched and spit on by patients. We've been lucky in Suffolk that no one has been killed yet, but that is probably only because we have a great relationship with the PD who help keep a scene safe for fire and EMS.
Both fire and EMS face dangers. The most danger to all of us comes from the driving. Remember Bill Stone and Heidi Behr? Probably not since you were probably still in diapers when they died in the line of duty. Fire's dangers are different from EMS. If know several people who have had needle sticks, including myself. Antiretroviral therapy is no picnic, even when you only have to take it for a week. I know of a few people who have Hep C due to needle sticks. Ever hear of HIV? I could go on but you get the point. Well, you probably don't so it just isn't worth it. I know, you won't be getting out of bed at 3 in the morning to save me, my family and my dog because your hero complex has been bruised. I'm not too worried as there are plenty of other professional volunteers who will and I thank them in advance for all they do.

Not only are you an embarassment to the fire service, you one also one stupid, illiterate asshole.
ANY (important word there) professional RESPECTS the work of the others profession. If you need big balls on a car fire, maybe you should find another avenue of volunteer work.
And note that the word PROFESSIONAL applies to anyone, paid or unpaid. It is the ATTITUDE of a true professional that makes them, not the size of their balls.
Do yourself a favor, along with all of us here and just STFU. You probably have about 3 years or less as a volunteer, but have seen it all. And try reading some fire service publications. You will not only learn something, you will also see that:
It is "EMS", not ems.
Fire fighter can be one or 2 words, with NO capitalization on the 2nd "F" at any time. And what the fuck is "overhall"? It is "overhaul".
And let me prove you wrong, Junior. There was a FDNY Lt who at one time was a volunteer who died LODD in a 99 cent store fire, along with a proby who served in Iraq. While they were trapped, 2 paramedics trained for confined space, etc. etc. were in the basement with the 2 lost Brothers, along with dozens of other Brothers.
So stop coming on here and telling everybody what it takes to be a fireman.
Many who read this have seen more fire than you will ever see. You are making yourself look like a horse's dick instead of the big and brave fireman you want everyone to think you are. Get some more time under your belt and you may understand what I mean. Trust me on this one, I have 30 years of both paid and vollie to back this up.
So keep your eyes and ears open, and your hands off the keyboard. And I do hope your "big balls" will keep you alive long enough to understand what is being told to you. Actually, your brain will. But you may understand one day.
Stay safe.
Stay safe as well, EMS and PD.

Why do you have such a hard on for the size of the balls in the fire service? It almost sounds like you are a closet homosexual. There's nothing wrong with that, but you should really should be honest with yourself about your sexual orientation. It sounds like high school is a rough time for you but you will find your way eventually.
If you've got such a hard on to prove the size of your balls and the volume of your guts, let us all know when you enlist in the Marines and serve a tour in a war zone (and actually see combat). Aww, I'm so glad you care so much about me and my mates. It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. I always do have fun in the box. From the maturity level of your posts I would have to guess you wouldn't know what the inside of a box is like. In case that went over your head, I was not talking about an ambulance.
We'll be waiting to hear from you. Don't worry, you won't be the first to wet your panties when the bullets start to fly.

He funny comment from one with no gut to join the Fire service. Yup easy to ride around in the box and do nothing.
I'm an EMT with the FD so your comment is BS.
Real service So your telling us you been in the sand Box. ?? To be honest I was not there

I really enjoy this debate but you are giving me a headache. Would you mind making your posts at least at the 4th grade level? It makes it difficult to understand. You are embarrassing your brothers in the fire service with your puerile (look it up) posts. You are nothing close to a professional. Part of being a professional is how you portray yourself and you have failed miserably. So tell us, how many roofs have you been on? How many interiors have you been in? I'm going to guess that the number is pretty low, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was zero. I'm talking about roofs and interiors on a 13-35, not an automatic alarm or training.
I highly doubt you are an EMT. You need to be able to read and write at an 8th grade level, which you continue to show you can not do. If you truly are an EMT, what is your number (or at least the first 3 digits) and when did you get your certification?
As for my comment being BS, to use your words, you have failed again. Even with a hint you didn't get my comment about a box. I assumed that being a high school or junior high school student you would have gotten it. Let me help you understand it a little better. A box is another word for a vagina. If you need to know what a vagina is, just do a search. There are plenty of references on the internet. Then again, with your obsession with the size of the balls of your brother fire fighters, you probably aren't interested in what one looks like.
Thanks for the laughs and keep showing us how big your balls and your guts are. Your mother is proud of you.

Funny little boy with big words and No Balls. You seem to have a thing about your mothers Vagina.
13 35 you been there ???? I think not. If you were The Rit would have to drag your ass out.
So where do you get all the terms that you have no idea of what they mean ?
By the way where did you serve ? Or is that more of your bull shit?

There you go, talking about guys balls again. You are obsessed with guys balls. Do you have trouble with basic reading comprehension? Show me one spot where I talked about my mother's vagina. I've been to plenty of 13-35s, but nope, never as a FF and never claimed I had been. You obviously have never been to one so please stop pretending you have. The real FFs on here can see you for the joke you are (refer to the several posts they have made already). What terms are you refering to that I have "no idea of what they mean."? You might want to get your keyboard checked. It appears that you 'n' key is stuck.

You seriously are a mental midget, which is why you will never be able to cut it in EMS, especially beyond the BLS level. I find it hard to believe you are even an EMT, since you have failed to say when you were certified or tell us what your numbers are. When your own FD brothers repeatedly tell you how wrong and idiotic you are, maybe you should listen. Keep up the good work probie, with your hero complex you will not last long in the fire service. With each and every post you show your lack of professionalism, and I call BS on you ever being in the USAF. There is no way you would ever have made it out of boot camp with your lack of professionalism and inability to read and write a coherent sentence. Maybe you were at Lackland, but it was probably when your mommy or daddy served there. Tell them I said thank you for their service and please stop embarrassing them.

Error on Star's part. I never served in the USAF, but know many who have. And one was highly decorated by the USAF, NYS, his job and his vollie house for his efforts on 9/11/01. Who doesn't talk the crap you do. MOF, he would call you what I call you: An embarrassment.
Junior, I am no 'want to be' fireman as you so describe. I have nearly 30 years in the service, of which 25+ have been in a career position. Been around when you were probably pissing in diapers. And over that time, I have met, had beers with, and worked with firemen whose jock straps you couldn't hold on your best day. And no doubt a few of the Suffolk instructors at Yaphank could knock you down a few pegs if they tried. Guys I won't mention by name, but have lectured around the Country and wrote numerous articles for job publications.
How about paying heed to what you were told when you first entered the vollies: Ears open and mouth shut. Works wonders.
Every post you make only shows what an embarrassment you really are. And shows what an asshole you are trying to stir shit. So go back into the phone booth and take off the Superman costume.
You must be a wonder to listen to in a rec room. A legend in your own mind.

Nope, 2 different people. You're sharp as a marble as well.
AGAIN, I have much time in the service. Have probably seen more fire than you ever will.
I have been on roofs, aerials, 1st due nobs on both sides of the border, and for a long time. Never put myself above anybody. Remember those last 5 words.
And you're grammar and punctuation is disgraceful. Tell us, what skool did you gradyoo8 frum? I don't want to send my kids there.
You couldn't hold a candle to Tom Brennan (RIP), Ray Downey (RIP) and many other firemen who did more than you ever will, who made numerous rescues and saves that they never received medals for, and never asked for.
They were MEN who did the job without having to brag and demean others. MEN that stood above many in Bed-Stuy, the South Bronx, Lower East Side, and Jamaica to name a few places. And I can say many a damned good volunteer as well in both counties.
You are a fucking disgrace to EVERY fireman, paid and volunteer.

Son, is this your best comeback? I'm no phony (there goes your spelling again), but while you are a legend in your own mind, your postings here are disgraceful to any fireman I have ever met, career or volunteer. You can't even quote me properly on here, you fucked that up as well.
If you can't even post a quoted remark properly, I could imagine what a clusterfuck you would be with a handline or any truck tool. Every post only makes you look like the 'Department Asshole' you probably are (I wonder how many of those stickers were placed on your gear).
I can give you the benefit of the doubt and may actually think you have the potential to be a decent fireman. But you're 'Superman' ego and talking down other people only makes you sound an asshole. AGAIN, with time and maturity, you may actually comprehend that.

Unfortunately, Most, but not all fire departments tend to concentrate the major portions of there budget to the fire side rather than the EMS side for those Fire Departments that also provide ambulance service.
need and what they in fact purchase, most people would probably agree that there department is pretty well equiped out on Long Island and probably don't need for much. However, as for those that claim waste, there is some truths to that argument as well.
Better oversight is needed in the Fire and EMS fields in general. With a country the is in a financial crisis of epic proportions, everyone needs to due there part in helping to not only control spending, but use it more wisely...

Billing is working in Port Jefferson because they got the villages (sadly not the town) to buy into the idea, sign an agreement and then followed through and are returning almost all the money back to the villages. State law mandates that any money that a municipality takes in must come in via the general fund line, so it is up to the municipality as to what spending they want to offset.
