A Huntington carpenter who crept into the home of a woman whose house he had once worked on and raped her was sentenced to 20 years in prison yesterday.
Suffolk County Court Judge C. Randall Hinrichs imposed the sentence on Antonio Escobar, 32, saying it was "clearly warranted" by the defendant's "reprehensible conduct."
Escobar committed the rape June 28, 2004, after he broke into a Greenlawn home and threatened to kill the 30-year-old woman and her 3-year-old daughter sleeping nearby if she didn't comply.
The rape happened about 25 minutes after Escobar broke into another house in the area and fondled another woman while holding a box cutter to her throat, prosecutors said. In that case, the 20-year-old woman struggled with Escobar, who then fled.
Escobar had done carpentry work on the home of the rape victim and seemed to know where she was sleeping and the family's schedule, police said.
The victims were not in court yesterday in Riverhead, but Assistant District Attorney Kate Wagner said the sentence satisfied "not only the victims, but society at large living in Suffolk County."
Escobar, a Guatemalan immigrant who had an interpreter, said only that he wanted to be sentenced, said his lawyer, Christopher Cassar of Huntington.
Escobar had pleaded guilty to the six-count indictment, which included charges of first-degree rape, burglary and sexual abuse. While Hinrichs imposed a sentence for each count, they are to run concurrently with the 20-year sentence for the rape.
Hinrichs also issued orders of protection for both victims.

Why does this newspaper not call the rapist for what he really is, an illegal alien. They not only try to hide this fact but name him as a carpenter who worked on the women's homes.
This is outrageous and dangerous. One of the woman was severely cut up with the boxcutter by the illegal alien from Guatemala. No mentioned of that which this poor woman had to endure.
I sure hope many people start reading this website to find out much more about Newsday's disregard for our communities and safety. To intentionally ignore the rapist Antonio Escobar 32 as an illegal alien and who lived in an illegal cellar apartment in Greenlawn Huntington, is an abomination and danger to our community.
