If the entire $548k is not raised to restore the sports and drama that the Supt. (who I hear makes 234K) and school board cut what happenes to the monies raised? Will the school board absord it and still punish the students? Why is Plainedge the only district to hurt the kids and hurt the resale value of our homes? Can anyone anser these questions??????

An interesting question. Technically, raising any money in lieu of property taxes to fund school sports is "pay for play" and the state deemed that illegal some years ago.
And another question that should be asked is, what other non mandated cost programs have also been cut besides sports?
Donations from organizations like booster clubs are permitted. Telling parent's that they must spend X amt of dollars if Johnny want's to play football is not permitted.

Now they must raise all the monies or they get nothing back cause of the pay to play rule which does make sense. But if they only raise half of the amount it is not enough so whay happenes to the funds that were raised? Does it go in a pocket or does the monies get refunded? Asking $200 per family that voted yes and $100 from those who voted no is not gonna cut it. If they are seniors or have no kids in the schools yet they won't donate money. But think of how the house values went down. A sad day for the Plainedge kids. The adminstration and teachers want more money for themselves without the care of the best interest of the kids. A sad fact for this small district. Maybe they should join Farmingdale district.
Everyone should say no to the fundraiser and the lousy spoiled brats will get what they deserve - nothing

I refuse to pay $2.50 at the pump. I vote no. This is outrageous. And those megamillion dollar gas companies better not rob my kids of their summer vacation just because I put my foot down and said "NO!"

Luxuries??? These kids hope to get scholaraships to colleges and have worked most of their lives for it. Yes some kids are spoiled but many are not and they need the scholarships to have a shot at a beeter lifestyle. Tell the Supt. to stop spending on the stupid conferences and all the wasted monies they spend on Colombia's Teachers College reading program. Cut all the conferences and trips they take. Salaries out here are way overboard for teachers. Don't blame the kids for a system that was set up by the adults.

Yes some kids are spoiled but many have worked towards a scholarship in his or her sport to help them pay for college. This does not make a spoiled brat. Kids are the product of their homes so put the blame there then. But as to the district let them cut out the trips, conferences and the monies they pay for Colombia/Teachers College reading program. It's unproven to work and has failed many a child. Lucy Caukins doesn't believe in phonics nor math for that matter. But, she is making a fortune off of the schools like Plainedge who are buying into her program. Salaries are way to high out here and they are getting raises faster than anyone else anywhere for that matter. Reel in the budgets but not at the expense of the kids.

Yep! It's true. We will all be broke unless we stop the infighting and team up in the streets of Albany to get some relief. Keep LI $$$ on LI. Untie management's hands in union negotiations. Where was the board supposed to find the money to keep going next year? The NO VOTERS left them little choice. We're not being punished. We're taking our medicine.

Instead of 21 in a class 24 is fine. Save some there, a few less Teacher College conferences, limit sick days instead of unlimited where you also have to pay the sub. Have the teachers chip in some thowards health insurance the way other unions do. These are just a few cost saving ideas....
you can't just arbitrarily stat throwing out ways to save money by making teachers pay into their health insurance, and limit sick days. Its called a contract, unless they offer it - you can't do anything until these things are renogiated. Its not an easy thing. Especially for members of the Board.

When will they wake up and stop pouring out the cash? There are many more teachers out there willing to work on LI so it's time to renegotiate a contract more in line to what is reality. The raises they get are more than the cost of living and more than most have gotten in the last few years.
i agree "interested party." Its time to get rid of the cash cow. We can't afford it and we're not going to take it ANYMORE! Renegotiate that contract? Tear it apart. Let them strike we'll hrie a new staff. You can't put a price tag on education but you what good is education if the community who lives here is bankrupt

With apologies in advance to the Plainedge atheletes, it bothers me that the fund raising for this group has extended outside their own district. Setting up campaign tables at venues outside of the district and asking other district residents to support Plainedge sports seems inappropriate. If you can't get the residents of your own district to support your campaign why impose on other residents who are facing the same budget challenges to help support what your school officials and the residents believe is not necessary.
I think the efforts for fund raising would be better served by contacting and asking for support of the local professional sports teams, college athletic programs, and the handful of those Long Island athletes that have made the successful climb to the professional ranks. Someone may also choose to gain sponsorship from some of the athletic clothing companies, sports drink manufacturers and other groups that normally advertise or sponsor sports programming.
Finally why not remove sports completely from school control and develop a participant / sponsor supported climate where the athletes can be developed in a truly competitive environment, coached by experienced, serious coaches (not a 7th grade science teacher looking for some extra cash) and still gain recognition from college scholarship programs? This may even provide an income resource for school districts from field and facility useage.

well put. Does anyone know how the money is going to be applied for the sports program? Does it go to disadvantaged children or the whole cost of the program as a whole? is it for both seasons? The money collected - can you choose whether to have JV or not - is it only Varsity? DETAILS DETAILS PLEASE

I say away with the Columbia Teachers College program. Reinvest that money to good use. Its not proven to make that much of a different. Not worth its weight in Gold

If not all of the money is raised they will set up a scholarship fund for this years seniors. So how fair is that? They only reinstated VARISTY sports for the 11th and 12th grade as of now. But only the fall and winter seasons. So let's see if they do raise the money this year it proves that the budgets can all be voted down and parents will raise the funds for their kids to play sports.
Lets trim the fat and fast. Time to bring in line the pay scales of the administration and the teachers. By the way teachers on Long Island work less than any other teachers in the NY area. They get unused snow days, unlimited sick time, etc....... who else gets that? Our money fuels this and if we say no more it will be no more. If the teachers do strike that can be replaced with equally competent ones starting a a little lower salary with a more in line pay scale then what is in place now. Once they see this happening there should be big changes.
