Suozzi Announces Minority Affairs Council

Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi today named nine members to the Minority Affairs Council, a charter panel that will make recommendations to the County Executive for the post of Minority Affairs Director, and help the County to better respond to the needs of the minority community. Suozzi appointed Deputy County Executive Hezekiah Brown, Rev. William A. Watson, Jr., Noreen Caro, Lisa Warren, Iris Johnson, Edward D. Tolver, II, Ali Mirza, Rassan Hoskin, and Elaine Kennedy.

Lisa Warren is a former Manager in charge of Fiscal Controls at the Long Island Power and also a former Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting Division, for Oppenheimer & Co., Inc., in New York City. Iris Johnson serves as the Executive Director for the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County. Ms. Johnson is also a member of the Minority Community Political Action Network and the New York State Division for Women Advisory Council.

Edward Tolver is the President of E.D.T. Flooring Contractors Inc, which specializes in commercial and residential floor covering sales installations and repairs. He is a former member of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, and the President of the Hempstead Branch of the NAACP. Mr. Tolver was awarded the NAACP Long Island Region Community Service Award and the NAACP Life Membership Award.

Ali Mirza is the Owner and President of Mirza Group, Inc., an auto, home, and business insurance agency. He is the Founding President of Americans of Pakistani Heritage, Inc., and the Director of the Pakistan League of America. Mr. Mirza received the Congressional Medal of Distinction for his community leadership and vision in 2001.

Rassan Hoskins is the founder of the National Afrikan/Afrikan American Maafa Remembrance Center. This is not about the "Asian" community. This is about one man, Ali Mirza's, representation that he serves as a Director in an organization which supports Pakistan's "peace without capitulation" in Kashmir and also supported watering down our efforts to apprehend and prosecute terrorists. Nassau County Legislator John J. Ciotti (R-North Valley Stream) sponsored legislation which revised the 2002 property tax exemption law for volunteer fire fighters and emergency medical technicians. Members of local fire departments and ambulance corps who have served for a minimum of five years will receive a 10% exemption on their Nassau County property tax. In addition, members who have 20 years of service will receive this exemption for the remainder of his or her life. "The brave members of our fire departments and ambulance corps deserve to see real savings on their Nassau County property tax bill," said Legislator Ciotti.

Due to a cap, the prior legislation only allowed for marginal savings due to a formula involving the local equalization rate. As a result of the cap, fire fighters who took advantage of the exemption only realized about $2.33 in savings. "The intent of the legislation was there, we just needed to work out the details so our County's volunteer fire fighters and emergency medical technicians could start seeing some real savings," said Legislator Ciotti. The new legislation, which is permitted by an amendment to state law, removes the cap. Therefore, department members with a minimum five years service can expect to save approximately $167.11 on their County property tax bill.

Currently, there are 3020 volunteer fire fighters and ambulance technicians who applied for the existing exemption, these residents will not have to reapply to receive the new level of exemptions. "The volunteer fire fighters and ambulance technicians in Nassau County provide a vital service to us all. We should make every effort to aid these lifesavers whenever possible. I urge all residents interested in becoming a volunteer to contact their local fire departments," added Legislator Ciotti

Three Village Times Addresses Photo Mishap
It has come to our attention that a photo that was printed in the April 15 edition of the Three Village Times has become the subject of a poll on the Elmont website, Elmont.org, entitled "Win at All Cost?"

The photo printed in the Three Village Times depicted Nassau County Legislator John Ciotti presenting citations to the honor students from Elmont Memorial High School on March 10.

The Three Village Times received the photo from Legislator Ciotti's office and printed it in our newspaper.

The Three Village Times was recently informed by the administrator of the Elmont.org website that Ali Mirza of Elmont was in the photo when it was taken. However, the photo we received did not have Mr. Mirza in it. Apparently Mr. Mirza, who would later turn out to be Ciotti's opponent in the Third Legislative District in next week's election, had been removed from the photo prior to the photo being sent to us for publication.

We want to reassure the community that we received the photo from Mr. Ciotti's legislative office already altered and printed it not knowing Mr. Mirza had been removed.

We would like to let the community know that we pride ourselves on our high integrity. We condemn the practice of submitting photos that have been altered or tampered with.

We respect each and every individual's right to run for elected office. Therefore, we respect the campaigns of both Mr. Mirza and Mr. Ciotti and we strive to provide a forum of equality so that our readers can make informed decisions.

I must say I am very disturbed by the charges since I had to be there and am an active member of the community and a Democrat elections inspector. C'mon. Suozzi cleaned Peterson's clock. Weitzman easily defeated a strong challenge posed by Don Clavin. Kathleen Rice scored a shocking upset of DA Dillon. The Nassau Democrats did a great job this year, and resources were poured into those County races. It looks like Suozzi used Mirza, and kept his distance, all understandable. Remember: Just 2 years ago an Italian-Catholic-American Larry DeAngles lost against Ciotti by a margin of 1,500 votes even though in 2003 the Democrats had made it a targeted race and threw in huge recources
Mirza lost by only a couple of hundred votes even though this year it was not a targeted race for the Democrats. They were focused in District 4 and hoped to defeat Ford. But guess what? Despite all the support from the party, including sending people from District 3 to help Democrats in District 4, Robert Soloman lost by about 800 votes. There were hudreds of Democrat operatives working for Solomon for months.
If the Democratic Party had not made a mistake in their judgement,
and realised how vulnerable Ciotti is, and had given Ali Mirza some timely support, Mirza would have won.
Don't forget that the Republicans Saw that and brought in recources from Becker and Muscrella's Districts (since they did not have any real competition) to work against Mirza. Plus they had all the employees from TOH and Sanitation District 6 working round the clock to save Ciotti.
Also remember Mirza won in every area of the District except Franklin Square where the registration heavily favors Republicans by 3 to 1 margin anyway.

As a volunteer in Mirza's campaign I have met every one that worked or volunteered in his campaign. Those kids were all college students from Nassau Community College recruited through the School's Democratic Club. There was no 14 year old among them. The "youngest looking" girl was 18 years old and her sister and mother also helped Ali's campaign on the election day.
And since when it became a problem to approach a youth council (the V.S youth Council, as you said) to discuss youth issues and views????
What is really bugging you guys is that.....Cairo, Ciotti, Ambersino and others are all from Valley Stream yet Mirza is the only candidate who virtually got 50% of the votes from there. And that is a slap on your face and shows how close Mirza came to end Ciotti's nonsense.

In North Valley Stream(home of Ciotti, Ed, Dharsi and Becker and Cairo) Mirza lost by only 84 votes
