Any clue

A friend saw an article in some fire/ems periodical about the Suffolk Sheriffs lack of staffing on the Sunrise and Expressway. Might be from last month. Anybody help me out with this?

Yea. In first responder. Written by some bohemia dispatcher who seems to know all. Fact is the sheriffs have the same coverage as Suffolk Hwy used to. Fact is, most all of his info was inacurate and i heard the sheriffs office is looking to take legal action against this individual due to his libelous and slanderous claims. It seems that he was put up by someone else with a motive to write that article.
Truthbe told

How do the Sheriff's have the same coverage? The SCPD put out 6-8 cars on each of the roads, Sunrise and L.I.E., while the Sheriff's deploy 2 cars per road. Response time is through the roof, Ticket revenue is in the toilet, not to mention the death of the man on the L.I.E. due to the Sheriff, not taking proper action during an engulfed car fire/accident and the bodies they left lying on the shoulder of the Sunrise after an accident. Thank Levy and his drunkin asshole Puppet Commissioner, Dick "Dopey" Dormer for that. The two roads are the Wild West now!

Who did he show he had no clue? Coverage is not the same. Bohemia dispatcher who wrote that article is not to far off the mark. When SCPD had the highway, there was Highway squads and district squad cars if needed. And if an accident investigation is needed, sheriffs call in the state and it takes twice as long. You must have short term memory loss or on the Levy/Dormer team.

Wow... Must have offended you. I am not SCPD. I am EMS. I didnt say anything bad about the deputies , they are doing thier job. But under-staffed. Personally, they are also very friendly, but so is suffolk police. I didn't start this thread but we both responded differntly. Be safe.

If you have worked those roads for ANY length of time, you know that if you shut down even ONE lane, the traffic in the remaining lanes is NOT zipping by you.
You would also know that more than likely a hurst tool job is an SPI, which means crime scene, which means ROAD CLOSED.
Of course the Sheriffs have NO Emergency Service Units, but that is an entirely different discussion.

Same coverage as SCPD...after LEvy reduced the SCPD coverage. When all was right with the world SCPD had SIX cars on each road PLUS THREE to FOUR additional cars at hov times PLUS another TWENTY or THIRTY cars available from MCSU, Motorcycles, and Safe-T.
Say what you like, the SCSO cannot in DOES not match that staffing and availablitiy of response.
From ABC News - Suffolk County DA Tom Spota calls it an epidemic. In fact, in the past month, his office has charged nine people who drove the wrong way.
"We need education and most importantly, enforcement," said Spota.
Suffolk County sheriff Vincent DeMarco says he lacks the manpower he needs for that enforcement.

I absolutely love it when all the frustrated Ex Highway guys from scpd come on here and air their frustartion and expose their small and fragile little minds.
If anyone takes a position that opposes their own, they come back here and label them as "Levy minions" or "simpathetic" to Levy's cause. Yet they are all knowing - all seeing - and yes, all powerful - NOT!
Interesting that this boobiliscious scpo brings up the epidemic of "wrong way drivers" as each and every wrong way driver entered the Expressway/Sunrise via service roads and exit ramps patrolled by . . . the SCPD. That's right, the same morons complaining about this epidemic are the very people responsible for these drunks getting on in the wrong direction in the first place. So unless these drunks are being air lifted in their cars and dropped onto these highways, the SCPD has got some splainin to do.
In addition, the SCSO matches the EXACT number of cars on both roads during the day and evening shifts and has MORE cars on than the SCPD did during the midnights. Days/Evenings = 5 cars on the Eway and 4 cars on the Sunrise. During the Mids the Deps have exactly the same number as during the day, while the scpd had always staffed with one PO less on each road during the mids.
As far as the Bohemia dispatcher - are you kidding? You are kidding right? You take a guy who has aspired to the greateness of "DISPATCHER" for a small local Fire District and suddenly he is an expert on staffing levels of Police Agencies on limited access highways? I THINK NOT! Since almost every statistic or number he listed in this newspaper was completely wrong, I think maybe he should stick to banging out a signal three when he cant get a crew out on the midnight shift. OR, watching TV at work while trying really hard NOT to go up three more pants sizes next year while he sits and grows bigger and bigger and even bigger.

****Already a timeless classic, the old "they came from the precicnt" arguement. Perhaps so, but (A), one sector cops has MILESand MILES of ROADS to cover, and traffic enforcement is not his only or even primary responsibilty, as opposed to The highway Dep that has maybe a couple 3 miles of ONE ROAD to cover and enforcement IS (or should be) his primary function. We allknow that at MOST here are TWO deps on the LIE overnight, and they are usually NOT ACTUALLY on the LIE.*****
In addition, the SCSO matches the EXACT number of cars on both roads during the day and evening shifts and has MORE cars on than the SCPD did during the midnights. Days/Evenings = 5 cars on the Eway and 4 cars on the Sunrise. .**** See above. Please. There are 4 deps on LIE, 2 on Sunrise, 2 on LIE mids and good luck finding THOSE two. BEFORE Levy reduced SCPD staffing, there were SIX SCPD cars on each highway, and 20 to 30 more available from MCSU, Motorcycles, and SAFE-T at a moments notice. The deps couldnt put a response like that together if they had too.****

**** Oh , I see, when you claim the FD LOVES the job the deps are doing, its all wine and roses. When they print a legitimate criticism, its all whine and disjointed noses. Got it****

Not for nothing but I've seen both sides do some great work and I'm a somewhat uninterested party.
Had 2 serious MVAs on my block (motorcycle for one single car for the other) and within 5 minutes there was an SCPD officer on scene and helping out with people who were hurt. I've also had a SCSO stop to help my wife change a flat tire last year. Thanks to whoever that was- my wife is lucky she knows where the gas tank is :p
Both sides have to do a damn rough job with less support from the public than I have seen anywhere else. Everyone is damned if they do and damned if they don't. These guys are out 24/7 rain & shine, weekends and holidays, missing baseball games and ballet recitals, dealing with the absolute dregs of Long Island. Mebbe cut them some slack here for being willing to do a job nobody else would ever want to.
Side note to the ant-cop trolls.... here's a piece of advice:
If you don't run 70MPH down Little East Neck or drive like you think you're running the Daytona 500 chance are you won't get scratched. You have no right to be butthurt because you got a ticket because you were acting like an ass on the road.

Well said..the service is still there..sure there were some growing pains, but knock it off. As a fire chief, there has been plenty of times I have pulled up to an MVA on Sunrise and asked for the status of Signal 10..and that was when SCPD had Sunrise..so sometimes they are there, sometimes they are not. Ask a SCPD sector officer..ask them what they think of thier brother SCPD highway patrolmen..they hated 95% of them. For the most part, if you were a scumbag cop, you went to highway. I knew very few decent SCPD highway guys. The SCPD sector guys were fighting the highway battle because they "had too"..most of them couldnt stand them. Every SCSO highway officer i have dealt with has been respectful and let me do my thing as chief with no hassle. This is a done deal move on with it. Worry about getting your rigs out to help protect you on the highways. Bohemia FD employees and volly's for the most part are morons. They got so much baggage in that department, that they should worry more about fixing themselves and worry less about the sheriffs office.
lets face it the sheffif dept cant handel lie they put out news day said 3 cars and i guess they are wrong but its a joke how they use 2 cars to pull over oe car they seat in the middle do nothing people wizzing by. yet they pull over one big rig. i mean come on. they should just say we need more cars or we cant handel it. on sunrise hwy it doesint seem like any one patroll it. maybe the should stick to the jails and go back to the way it was. scpd still has the hwy vec the man power when a few more people get killed or maybe a bus crash the county will wake up.

The truth is that there are 3 cars assigned to the sunrise sectors around the clock. There are a additional 3 cars during the rush hours of 6-9 am and 4-7 pm. There is also 1 step car on each of the overnights and 2 step cars on weekends.
On 495 there are 4 cars assigned around the clock and a additional 5 cars during the AM rush from 6-10 am and 5 cars from 3-8 pm. That goes to 7 cars on the Friday rush. There are 2 step cars on each of the overnights and 2 additional roving units on the weekends.
Ticket #'s did go down for the first 9 months because SCPD still had all HOV enforcement. Since that time Ticket #'s are comparable. As far as ticket revenue. The County does not make any $$$ from tickets that go to TVB. They do get 12% of the base ticket fine but that does not include any surcharges or fees. The bulk share of the $$ goes to the state. The 12% does not even cover the salaries of the officers or the clerical staff that processes the tickets.
As far as "the wild west" statement. Accidents do happen and people will die from them. However Fatal accidents are down slightly since the Deps have taken over the highway. That may have nothing to do with the Deps but the roads are hardly the wild west.
