The economy is not what is was in the late 80's and early 90's when LOSAP was instituted. Is it time for it to end?

Can we get an intelligent conversation going on this?

Does it really help? Do 18 year old's really think about staying around 30 or 40 years.

Would that 65 year old come down to the fire house anyway if we never had LOSAP?

I realize everyone that will comment benefits from LOSAP, but asde from collecting 400, 500 or even 800, should we consider ending it?

Yes. LOSAP should be eliminated. This is supposed to be a VOLUNTEER SERVICE

Just think, If you added up the losap money, fire / ems taxes, donations, the discounts volunteers get for college tuitions, and the tax breaks that each firefighter / emt gets that comes to a nice chunk of change

YES! Eliminate it! And I am a vollie with over 30 years. That was not the reason I joined, it actually wasnt in effect when i did. In answer to your questions, No, I dont see these youngsters staying around 30-40 years. You cant get them to come down now without giving them something. The 65 yr olds, they will still come down, what else do they have to do, and I do believe that they remember way back when, when they did join and the real reason for doing it. Everyone has to just change their attitude and remember WHY they joined, these departments would save hundreds of thousands of dollars. Does anyone remember what the word VOLUNTEER means. I dont think volunteers at a hospital get LOSAP. Everyone needs to stop being greedy, and just do the job that they SWORE to do before this service comes to an abrupt end!

I agree. I own my own business and have NO pension at all....basically I will work until I'm dead. That being said. I watch as guys with 5 years try to figure out a way to beat the system. Do nothing to help the department or the community and still say they are deserving of LOSAP. There are members who are 70 years old who come to fake meetings and drills just to collect a lump sum check in January...they don't help the dept. or community. I look at other departments where there is a 60 year old man, unable to pull a hose down a hallway or safely drive an engine...but he finds a way to help by doing fire police work or even signal 8 for a worker. Not my dept. these guys turn 40 and you never see them again. We have members who don't live in town but yet still collect losap points. Forget auditing the districts anymore, they are so scared that they are in line....audit the losap. Take a good look. If there's a guy who lives in Florida 8 months out of the year, how is he making losap?

There is no end

Sorry about your conversation, but the LOSAP system cant just end. You see by passage of State Laws in the last fifteen years LOSAP monies held in escrow are actually owned by the FF/EMT or their next of kin should they pass. So even if State laws were changed to eliminate new yearly payments into LOSAP the amounts currently held are still there for the FF/EMT's based on their years of service in the system and there is a guaranteed payout for all of them. If you truly want to change or eliminate this system you need to contact your State Legislators and ask them to change the current laws which enacted LOSAP. Good luck with that. No politician with a single brain cell left in his head is going to attempt to take this away from the thousands upon thousands of Volunteers. Volunteers are the single largest voting block in the State behind teachers, but hey good luck to you.

In closing I must say that I find your opinion morally objectionable. The LOSAP system was intituted to give something to the FF/EMT's for their devotion and service. To simply say that times are tough now so we don't have to continue this program is cowardly and unfair. Grow up, and think for a few miniutes, I'm sure you can come up with 100 or so things we could cut from the tax budget before even touching this system.

PS- You are a sh!t stirring azzhole.

No one joins the FD takes months of classes to be an EMT or FF for $20 a month oer year that they'll see maybe 20 years later. When people join, most don't know the LOSAP system exists, I didn't and it took 2 years to figure it out cause it wasn't a focus. We made percentage to be in goos standing and have priveledges in the dept, not for some fantasy $400 a month in 20 years. Anyone joining for that reason wont last 3 years, that's about the test of a lifer to be. Each dept has full control over how much they make you do to earn it. If the Chiefs are too lazy to enforce or create bylaws
making people show up for calls, that's their fault. You can't pay for this service for half the cost. But we should consolidate depts and commisiioners and purchase as counties rather than single little fiefdoms.

You bet!!!Start with the fire police--last week they showed up 20 minutes late at a false alarm-

Are you kidding!! It's all about the points.

Not only is it time to end LOSAP, the use of Chief's vehicles for commuting to work should be eliminated. When the economy returns, these perks can be revisited! Let's get back to a VOLUNTEER fire Department!

Losap is pennies in the grand scheme of things, school budgets are 77% of the tax burden and these pennies are scrutinized????
