Steve Levy through the years The chairman of a legislative task force probing hate crimes Tuesday charged the administration of County Executive Steve Levy with compromising their work by improperly obtaining an advanced copy of a report and cutting 52 pages from it.
At a Hauppauge news conference, Legis. DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) held up the altered 98-page copy of the still unreleased report, which he said deleted the verbatim testimony of those who spoke at four hearings across the county in the summer and fall of 2009 in the wake of the stabbing death of Ecuadorean immigrant Marcelo Lucero. He said the report had been planned as a 150 page report.
The lawmaker could not detail whether other editing changes were made because he did not have a copy of the original draft that was put together by the staff of the Suffolk Criminal Coordinating Council. The council staff worked with the task force.

"To have the efforts of the task force thwarted at the last moment by an unwanted and unwarranted interference of the county executive is inexcusable," said Gregory.
But Chief Deputy County Executive Edward Dumas, said, "I reviewed the report to ensure that police department initiatives and programs were accurate and complete and made no suggested edits, additions or deletions except for the table of contents for the police department's section."
Dumas added that Gregory's claims were outrageous and false. "It's very sad he is politicizing an issue of such significance," Dumas said.
Gregory said he is asking the Suffolk Ethics Commission to review whether the county's administrative code was violated because Dumas received an advanced copy of the report from John Desmond, probation department director who is council chair and oversees the staff.
Gregory said he is meeting in his office with Desmond and council staff at 3 p.m. Tuesday to seek the original draft of the report. "We are going to take control of the process and make sure the report remains intact," Gregory said.
Renee Oritz, a task force member, said the report was aimed at showing Suffolk's immigrant community that the county was facing the hate crime issue and dealing with it in a transparent manner. "This totally dilutes that," said Oritz, who is also a deputy legislative clerk.

If ND pulled it it's because of the incestuous relationship that it has with SL and more proof that ND abrogated its free press responsibilities long ago.

DuWayne is one of the brightest members of the Leg. He may have made a mistake and jumped the gun here
