Per the recent Party filing in July there is only $63,053.54 in the Party til including the money transferred in from Leg Altmann's account.

Terry Butler, the upcoming Deputy BOE Commissioner is now the acting Treasurer of the Party.

According to filings with the Nassau BOE the Nassau Dems have $875,000 in Cash on Hand. By comparison the Nassau GOP is so hard up for money that they are hitting up their candidates for $30,000 or more depending on the office being bought.

My oh my, how times have changed.

(And, a good deal of the Anti-Goosby lawsuit money is coming from GOP coffers, not Dems.)

Sorry, but the term "goombah" is in no way shape or form equivalent to the racial terms that have been mentioned.

The term "goombah" does not in fact refer to Italians, or Italian-Americans, or to people of any other racial or ethnic persuasion.

The term is a reference specifically to Mafia mobsters. Granted, most of these to whom the term applies are in fact Italian-Americans, but this does not make the term an ethnic slur.

The connecting of insults to the Mafia and insults to all Italian-Americans was first made - and successfully continued, while wrong - by the Mafia itself when it founded an organization (I think it was titled the Italian-American AntiDefamation League, or something like that) to protest the film "The Godfather."

If in fact someone is using the term to suggest that anyone who is Italian is a member of the Mafia, then it could be straying into ethnic stereotyping.

However, when someone not in the mafia - Italian or not - goes out of their way to specifically APPEAR as a stereotypical "goombah" then the term would be even more of an insult, as if they were "wanna-be" mafioso.

In any case, it is laughable to suggest that the term equates to long-used racial slurs that are meant by their users to apply to all members of a race or ethnic background.

You have NO clue what you are talking about. I am Italian - 1st generation. "Goomba" has nothing to do with the Mafia, your extensive research watching "The Godfather" notwithstanding.

The REAL word, "Gompadre" and Gomadre" mean "Godmother and Godfather" in the REAL sense. NOT the movie sense. When a man or woman christens a child, they become the "gompadre" and "gomadre" of the parents. Even if the parties are not related by blood, it creates a relationship as close to being family without blood and the goombadre and gomadre are held in a place of respect.

Today, however, it has taken on a demeaning connotation. "Goombas" are Italians the same way "Micks" are the Irish and Kikes are "Jewish". If used the way the ignorant poster used it, he means all the "Italians" in the room, ie Mondello, Cairo, Nicolello, Galluscio, etc.

If you are really Italian, do NOT let people get away with these words that may "sound" innocuous. Demand the same respect every other group demads!
