Patricia Irving, mayor of the Village of Asharoken, has been appointed deputy superintendent of highways for the Town of Huntington, replacing retiring deputy superintendent Carl Cavanaugh.
Highway Superintendent William Naughton citing her “tenaciousness” and “management style” as reasons for his choice.
Irving has served as village mayor -- a position she will continue to hold -- since May 2008. She was previously a village trustee for five years.
Irving said she was told of Naughton’s decision about two months ago and was “thrilled” to bring her administrative experience to the position.
“We’ve been working on various projects together, so I’m very excited to continue.”
As mayor, Irving has implemented several infrastructure projects for the village, including more than 50,000 cubic yards of sand deposits on Asharoken Beach and the recent renovation of seawall where Asharoken meets Eatons Neck, which had been breached during the March 2010 Nor’easter.
Both projects gave Irving experience working with multiple levels of government, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which completed the beach and seawall restoration, the latter of which required Irving to declare a state of emergency for the village in order to obtain $2.7 million in emergency funding from Congress.
Naughton said he first worked with Irving years ago when she wanted to install new sidewalks and guiderails for Norwood Avenue School in Northport and was impressed with her ability to “get a job done.”
“Pat has the ability to move multiple projects forward in a very short time,” he added. “Other politicians take years to accomplish a fraction of what she has done”.
