Ok so i happend to find this message board by mistake.. Is this for real.. is this what my own town really thinks of the local Fire men and EMT's, VOLUNTEERING anytime that they have to ensure the safety of the neighbors. There out there Risking them selfs sometimes to ensure you live to see another day. This is terrible.. I cant believe some of you people. Some of you are complaining because a chief might take his car to work or something... Seriously??? Grow up... If this is what my community really thinks of me and all the other volunteers then I'm sorry but I'm done.. they can find someone else to do it...

If all your perks, over-sized firehouse, and ridiculous amount of equipment, is costing the taxpayers a lot of money, then it's a problem. It may cost even more than a paid fire dept. The fire depts. should have to merge just like the school districts should.

Keep mostly everything, but merge. There's no reason Long Island needs 150 rescue trucks when NY makes it just fine on 6.

do more with less.

NYC has 5. Rescue 6 was in service only for the convention a few years back.

LI is a wee bit larger than NYC.
No reason to go to extremes, there is plenty of room in the middle on this

Big-screen TVs, cable, open bar, golf committee, training upstate, hotel rooms, credit card, vouchers, installation dinners, race car and gasoline, etc. Not bad, and then ring my bell for solicitations.

NYC still has more incidents where they need to use said trucks than all of LI.

well, if you want to increase response time dramatically, yea reduce to six. I still think there is room in the middle of this argument.
And those fancy perks in all the firehouses,
If thats what encourages enough to volunteer, then it is worth it.
I don't see that many people volunteering.

I do, and they join for the perks.

We call them the "Dinner Brigade". No fires, but every meal they are first ones in.

Ladder companies in the city do some things that the rescue companies do, on a smaller scale. So NYC doesn't JUST have 5 rescue rigs. They have 5 plus all the ladder companies that can use airbags, hurst tools, etc and some that do confined space, trench, hazmat, etc. LI isn't set up the same way. Another IKE....

All for $300-$400 per year pretty good deal. Look at school and pubic library tax. That is where most of you're tax bill comes from.

lets be real here

Agreed. But lets not forget we could have twice as many cops and a well equipped police department if their salaries weren't so excessive.

Until You get off your ass and out of bed at 2AM and respond to the aid of another human regardless of color religion race. leave your family for a week to fight an out of controll brush fire or respond to the worst attack on U.S. soil or give up your New Year's Day to help stop a potential explosion untill you can say you helped your fellow man .....You can go fuck yourself

calm down

If they got rid of the fully stocked bars in the firehouses I might agree with you.

The thought of a paid fire dept. costing less is beyond silly, though I wouldn't be opposed to it. The fact that we do not have enough volunteers even with the perks is proof that they are needed. Unfortunatelty, the level of community spirit and volunteerism isn't what it used to be. We have become a lazy self absorbed society obssesed more with being jealous of what everyone else has as opposed to what we can do to achieve it ourselves. God bless our volunteers. Untill we do have a paid fire dept, they are out there protecting us 24-7 for what I consider relatively little for the inconvinience and the risk. If you think they have it so good then join them!!!
Do something good for yourself and your community.

i totally agree if you think they got it so good join them and volunteer, become part of the brotherhood, who dedicates endless hours of classes and drills ,and when you see for yourselfTHEN TALK its not just the man in a uniform you see putting out fires and rescuing people from burning cars,IT"S SOMEONES HERO.... I THANK ALL THE DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS IN OUR COUNTRY,
from the person who passes out the paper answers phones at the hospitals and sell candy in the gift shop
to the person who just calls the people on the phones to see how they are today
and thekind people who help serve food at the food kitchen on a family holiday
volunteering is a personal gratification, without asking anything in return, but to help the community,
i really don't know how i ended up on this site out of curiosity, but it kiind of aggrivates me to see people bashing people without knowing the bare true facts, on hear say i see alot of false unreliable information thought i would learn a little insight of whats really going on in my community but i guess you learn who your enemies what has this world come to...negativity breeds negativity...

It is not that people don't want to join, it is the boys club mentality that keeps interested people from joining. The last time I tried to join, I worked nights, had no children, lived within walking distance to the firehouse and was certified in 2 states as an EMT or higher. During an interview with one of the chiefs, a member walked by and commented "Another married guy we can pollute with beer", I said, I don't drink, well that interview ended shortly after that. Later that week I received a call from that chief to come see him, I did, he told me that the department didn't have the money to train me. This as his tween daughter walks up in all her junior FF gear. No money or not their drinking buddy....... I have respect for the individual who gives so much for their community, but absolutely no respect for the institution that enables such boys club mentality and abuse of community resources I.e. Money and people who would volunteer if not for the BS. To the individual volunteers, thank you for your gift of time and compassion, as for people not wanting to volunteer because they are lazy is BS. My father, uncles, one, who gave 50 years of faithful service to his local FD and several cousins all volunteered there time to
their community. I had no desire to get polluted with beer, I just thought I could contribute to my community as they did.

Last year I went on ~300 calls. For that I got a dinner at a catering hall (the dept. paid for the alcohol, not the district) and a baseball game for my family. If I do that for 20yrs I get a $400/month pension from the state.

To BE ABLE to volunteer, I attend about 6-8hrs/month of training schools. Going the calls takes another 3-4hrs/weeks. Just to BECOME an EMT I had to give ~8hrs week for 6 months. Every three years I have to refresh; that's ~8hrs/week for 3 months.

Why do I do it? To be honest: Karma, The pension, and knowing that I have at least SOME basic life-saving skills that may come-in handy should a loved-one need them someday.

I'm also a homeowner who pays ~$450/yr for an absolutely fabulous department with state-of-the-art equipment, and very well-trained volunteers.

I have no complaints about the system.
