Steve Levy through the years Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota and Comptroller Joseph Sawicki harshly criticized County Executive Steve Levy Wednesday for not allowing them to fill vacant positions in their offices.
Spota said Levy requires him to repeatedly plead with him to fill positions that become vacant when prosecutors leave the department. "It is just beg, beg beg. That's all it is with him," Spota said during a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature's Ways and Means Committee.
Sawicki accused Levy of seeking to remove eight positions from his department this fall after Sawicki stopped Levy from hiring a $61,000 photographer for himself.
Spota, Sawicki, County Treasurer Angie Carpenter, Clerk Judith Pascale and an aide to Sheriff Vincent DeMarco spoke to lawmakers to support legislation to give countywide elected officials authority to fill positions funded in the county's annual budget, a responsibility Levy now holds.
But Levy called it neither "fair nor fiscally responsible for these five departments to fill all their positions while all the other departments, including my own, have to cut back in tough times."
The committee approved the bill unanimously; it could go to the full legislature for a vote as soon as Tuesday
