It's about picking the right candidate whether they have a chance of winning or not. To pick a candidate soley on that fact they will most likely win an election, is not conducive for good politics or government.

If a party stands by it's principles and supports those candidates that meets those principles, the public will eventually come to know and respect what your party stands for. A good party knows how to win, but just as importantly they know that to give up your principles for a win is in the long run, no win at all.

One good example of this is Republican Paul Tonna Suffolk County Legislator.

He has done more harm to the Republicans than any Democrat could possibly dream of. If the party had kept to their principles they never would have supported him for a second term. Because the Republicans kept him because he could win an election, Paul Tonna helped the Democrats to bury the Republicans in Huntington and Suffolk County.
