View Full Version : Bob Gaffney for Governor? Where Does This Leave Suozzi?

According to Fred Dicker in the New York Post, Former Suffolk County Executive and current Meyer, Suozzi partner Robert Gaffney has had talks with NYS Conservative Chairman Michael Long about running for Governor in 2006. Looks like Tom Suozzi's plan to run with Conservative backing is knocked to the ground. Word is that local party officials in Nassau may have been out of the loop with respect to these discussions. Perhaps, "Pappa" Suozzi is trying to assure his wayward son's loyalty to his Democratic roots by encouraging his law partner to seek the Conservative Line? If Tom Suozzi is boxed out of the Conservative Line in 2006, how does this impact Conservatives currently employed with the Suozzi Administration?
Any speculation on Dicker's story? Is there any truth to it? Is it accurate? How do the Suozzis fit into this scenario, if at all? Are they trying to set up a Suozzi v. Gaffney battle for Governor in 2006? Is this all just a terrible joke?
Elliot Spitzer is a shoe in for the democratic nod in the gubernatorial race. The GOP wants someone they hope will be a formidalble opponent. Bob Gaffney is formerly an FBI agent and I believe he held another position prior to getting into politics. This is a real story, no doubt there. Gaffney has plenty of unused campaign funds and when he was done with his last term as County Exec of Suffolk there was a rumor he would seek a higher office.
Tom stays in Nassau

With SPitzer a lock for govenor and Pirro looking like an easy win for AG, what state office is left for TS to run for? I think Tom stays in Nassau for 4 more years.

I kinda like Gaffney over Spitzer
While Gaffney didn't bowl me over, Spitzer doesn't either.
Instead of going after wall street and big corporations
he Spitzer should
have also gone after those businesses that prey on our quality of
life issues such as crooked real estate brokers and developers.

Love that sense of irony. Touche, my friend. Is your implication that Spitzer isn't using his office as State Attorney General to attack his buddies in the real estate business, and only goes after folks who aren't part of his donor base.
Then again, Newsday says that Dicker is all wet. Such is life. That's why we have a rumor board. Now back to tales of wine, women, and Pete Sylver.

One of the most dangerous things in politics is to deny an ambitious young pol a shot at a higher office. Tom DiNapoli tried to do that to Suozzi in 2001 and lost that celebrated primary. ( Can you imagine how better Nassau would be if he had won?) If Suozzi feels the 2006 statewide musical chairs game is gonna leave him without a seat--he very well might challenge Spitzer. As ive said on this board before, he DOES NOT want to be sitting at one west street in 2007. Thats the year the political s*** is gonna fall in Nassau. That year a lot of financial obligations come due and it will require either a MASSIVE tax increase or a bloody budget war. Both solutions will mean an end to a career in politics. Another Suburban County Executive might be bought off by Spitzer as Lieutenant Governor, But neither Elliot nor the state party leaders can stomach Tommy boy a heartbeat away from the Governorship. Faced with no chair to sit in on the statewide ticket--he might just primary Spitzer--and pray he gets beaten people. PRAY.
