true but, the chairman gets to pick the candidate in a special election, and whoever the republican is wins.
true but, the chairman gets to pick the candidate in a special election, and whoever the republican is wins.
Consider the absurdity of this comment.
American soliders are sacrificing their lives in order to create a free and democratic Iraq, where citizens have the right to vote for the candidate of their choice from a field of many candidates.
But in the Town of Hempstead, in the State of NY, the home of dozens of U.S. servicemen and women who have given their lives for this country, one man, a political boss named Joe Mondello hand-picks candidates of his party for special elections in a closed process that is diametrically opposite what we are striving to accomplish half a world away.

it just happens to be the truth in special elections the party chairman picks the canidate. Same goes for the conservative and dems. Their is no primary or petition period, its a short 30 day election period.
So in the case of a district registration being overwellimingly for one party, in away you are right the chairman picks the new elected official. Then that person runs as an incumbant the next time arround.
In this particular case the 17 ad is very republican so whoever the rep chairman picks should win.
If and when Dinapoli steps down the dem chairman would select a candidate to run who should easily win in the 16th ad.
Is it a good system, I guess not, perhaps we should run a special election like they did for Govenor in California and let anyone run by just paying a fee. Heck, I would put my name in. Its likely the only way I would ever get a chance to run.

Garden City already has a State Senator--that stiff Kemp Hannon that we in Levittown are stuck with. He only remembers he represents us in election years; otherwise he's nowhere to be found. Even his local legislative office is in his hometown of Gaaarden City. Charlie O'Shea represented us when he was an Assemblyman, and he was a nice guy. He walked door to door all the time and always came to the Levittown Youth Council events even when it wasn't election time. My neighbors and I always thought Mondello ran Charlie for the awful job of Assessor to groom him for another office; but that didnt happen-- after he lost he has really vannished. O'Connell's District could do a lot worse that O'Shea--look at us now, were represented by Clueless Dave McDonough! My only question is: if offered, would Charlie take the job?

Someone who knows the inner workings on the Nassau Gop told me today that they expect O'Connell to lose to Rocco Ianarelli in the County Clerks race, so this thread is a moot point. He also told me that O'Connell will be campaigning a lot in Mike Balboni's Senate seat (7th SD) this year, because Balboni is either going to get the Attorney General or...get this...Governor's nomination in 2006, and Maureen would run for his vacated seat. Very interesting!

If Maureen wins there could be a massive realignment in the local political scheme. It is clear that a certain county legislator would like to move up, there is a village mayor who would like to move up and there is a different village trustee that would like to move up.
This means to me that it could be on of two different scenarios. The legislator goes to albany the mayor goes stays in mineola.
Or
The legislator goes to Albany and the trustee goes to Mineola.

Sorry to all the Amrtins fans. Mayor Jack lives in the 16th A.D. and has for the past year. In order to run for the seat in the 17th A.D. he's gotta live there at least a year in advance.
I don't see Rich Nicolello leaving anytime soon. He's got one of the three safest Republican seats in the County Legislature and his law practice does fine.
Whoever runs if Maureen wins, would probably be from the Town of Hempstead and it would upset the Southern Tier of North Hempstead who has had the 17th since Mike Balboni moved to Mineola in the early 1990's.

Why is Levittown worried about the 17th? Maybe because someone doesn't like DL and he has no competition for the seat?
Or are other hacks casting aspersions to weaken the frontrunner?

Answer the question: Did Domonic Longobardi graduate from College? I guarantee you the Democrats will be asking the same question if he is the candidate. If you don't think it matters, ask Barbara Dillon, the DA's daughter who tried to get elected to the Nassau Legislature from Rockville Centre in 1995 without a college degree. Dillon lost. Difficult to represent an affluent area full of Mommys and Daddys who brag about which Colleges their children attend, if you don't have at least a college degree--or law school or graduate school. So answer the question....

What does she do is she loses? The demonrat machine seems to be a juggernaut these days.......

Mondello thinks of the Nassau Republican Assemblymembers as his last farm team. ( Why not, he has destroyed the rest!) History has shown us that under Mondello if an Assemblymember from Nassau doesnt go to the Senate he/she is brought back home to run locally. For example: Parola in '93 for County Comptroller; Muscarella in '95 for the initial County Legislature race; O'Shea in "97 for Assessor; Becker in '98 for the McCarthy Congressional seat. Kate Murray in '99 for Hempstead Clerk; Labriolla in '03 for Oyster Bay Clerk; Rumours abound that both Ferrara and Alfano were asked to succeed Guardino as Hempstead Supervisor at various times. I'm sure Maureen wanted a County-wide shot after those two close losses running for North Hempstead Supervisor ('97, '01). Of course if they lose and give up their Legislative seats, there is less and less for Mondello to offer them. No more consolation Judgeships!
FYI: Maureen didn't run for NH Sup in '01. She ran in 97 and 99. She came close in 97 but got clobbered in 99.

No petitions for vacancies when its not a November Election. In fact, the registered party voters in a particular political jurisdiction approve of the "Committee;" their names are on the designating petitions of the office, I believe. So when you approve/sign the nominating petition, you give approval to the process of filling that vacancy. But all of the partys County Chairmen ( JJ, Fat Joe, Bogstead, Mrs. Perragine and whomever is runnning the County Working Famliys Party) sit on and control that selection, in point of fact.

I started this thread and I actually live in the 17th Assembly District. There is also a good chance I'm the only one who has posted that can actually VOTE in a special election to fill this seat if Maureen wins. Its disheartening to know that if Maureen is elected County Clerk the residents of the 17th will have little imput in choosing her successor. I'm sure a number of qualified people would like to run in a large Republican primary to fill it; lets face it--this is a Republican seat. Wouldn't it be exciting and intresting if ther was a 4, 5 or 6 person Republican primary? I think a lot of my neighbors would enjoy seeing this exciting slice of Democracy. The debates would spark a lot of neighborhood interest. Knowing the party bosses will pick the nominees makes me want to keep our classy incumbant Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell. If that means I have to vote against her this November, I will and convince my neighbors to do the same! Sorry Mo.

That's only after the reapportionment like '92 or '02. If the incumbent gets cut out of their district they can run for re-election without being a resident. Then after winning they can move into the district.
However for a special election, the candidates must reside in the district for a least one year prior to the election.
Mo loses to RI for county clerk. Raises profile in her AD.
