Suozzi vs Levinson
05-28-2005, 12:54 PM
Members of Team Suozzi have been told not to support an income tax. Harvey Levinson said yesterday that Kate Murray should support an income tax because that's an answer to tax relief. Same team, same party different message. Which one is it boys?
Newsday, next time the two of them are together, I dare you to ask them that queation!

Suozzi has only himself to blame for his problems with Levinson. Tommy Boy personally picked Levinson, a 25 year senior assistant with Dennis Dillon, to run against O'Shea in 2003. Then the County Tax Bills came out 2 weeks before Election Day, political lightning struck and Harvey wins be 1,600 votes. As happens with most first time winning candidates, Levinson thinks HE did it ALONE. He actually thinks he is now a somebody--and not just a minor supporting player behind Suozzi's leading role. Rumors are that Levinson rarely goes to the office except on days when the Board of Assessors is in session. However, it is true that the County Democratic party is furious that Levinson has raised the Income tax issue in his race against Kate Murray. An experienced Nassau politico would know of the tremendous issue Harvey has just handed the Republicans. Kate didn't need this issue to win, but by tatooing Levinson with it and by extention Suozzi, Tommy Boy's plurality shrinks and Kate looks like the taxpayers watchdog. It also puts every Democratic County legislator on the hook --they would have to vote for a "HOME RULE" bill saying they want it, before the State legislature could consider it. Republicans will force every Democratic County legislative candidate to distance themselves from Levinson or be handcuffed together on this issue. It also gives a happy Petersen an unexpected issue in the County campaign. Suozzi and the Democratic Legislators may have to publiclly distance themselves from Harvey before this campaign is over. Additionately, if, as expected, both parties will be primaring for the Independence line in September, Nassau residents will be hearing a LOT about which candidates support an County income Tax and which ones don't. NOT the issue Tom Suozzi wanted to resonate with voters during the summer months. With two first time candidates running for County Clerk and DA, a Comptroller candidate with lofty ambitions of his own and a Hempstead Supervisor candidate wanting a County-wide income tax--thats some ticket the Democrats have put up this year! Oh yeah, and they STILL don't want Rocco for Clerk!
