This was a nice cover-up certain some1's driving record was destoryed B4 the cops got it plus Riverhead pd is in Bed with riverhead VAC.

Ambulance driver had a hard time seeing the road due to the fact he was driving with his head up his azz !!
Why hasn't Riverhead Town Police completed their investigation yet? Should the NYS State Police be called in to wrap things up?

Brian=Jackazz !!! You are blinded by the facts, stop trying to justify what happened by NOT looking in the direction of the one you protect. Its horrifying people died, but open your eyes to the fact that the DRIVER of the bus bears a great deal of responsibility for what happened.
So when will we know the result of the investigation?

I agree that a driver of any emergency vehicle should be aware of everything and observe all conditions around when he or she is driving either to an emergency or to the hospital in emergency mode. But if you look at the particulars of this accident the ambulance was traveling w/b towards the hospital with lights and sirens based upon the condition of the patient. The truck who pulled over looked like he was going to yield instead decided to make a left hand turn. The ambulance driver saw that in enough time to be able to hit the brakes and go around the truck rather then hit the side of the truck. I believe the actions by the driver were the best he could do when confronted with the situation that was in front of him. I believe that if the rear tires never hit the curb and blew out the most that might have happened would have been the back of the ambulance getting damaged and not the side. We all should try to support the friends and families of Heidi and Mr. Stone. If we just keep going on and on that we are not helping anyone.

No charges filed due to the fact there was no intentional act of negligence. Speeding or passing vehicles during a emergency vehicle operation is authorized by NYS vehicle and traffic laws. The driver was reacting to another m/v's actions. The 2nd driver found more at fault was the truck driver, even though there was no contact between the two m/vs. If the driver wasnt intox or on drugs there was no negligence on his part, certainly no criminal behavior. Had this been a 2 civilian mva there STILL would be no criminal charges, it was a accident remember?
To change anything you would have to look at the various laws making emergency vehicles operators exempt from prosecution.

Just a few facts for all of you: Yes, speeding and going around traffic is well within the rights of an emergency vehicle operator if he is using DUE REGUARD. Was the driver in that ambulance doing that? NO!! Was he driving at a prudent speed? NO!! The skid marks and the tree tell that story without even knowing anything about anything. Was he driving at a safe speed so that the medic and the EMT could do propor patient care in the back of the ambulance. No!! And why do i think i know that?? Because i went to both of their funerals.

New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. Title VII, Article 23, Section 1104. Authorized Emergency Vehciles. Besides, it is not immunity. It is called an exception. Predicated on the process of due regard.

The prior writer stated that EVO's are "exempt" from prosecution. That is what was news to me. Do emergency vehicles and their operators enjoy a degree of privelege under the law? Certainly. But exempt from prosecution? I don't want anyone getting behind the wheel of a piece of emergency apparatus thinking that they are exempt from prosecution or immune to liability no matter how culpable they may be in contributing to an accident. Thanks for the cite.

WE ALL know the DRIVER should have been charged lets be honest here...... :twisted: Good example why the system needs to go paid to have professionals driving these emergency trucks instead of some kid with just a class D whos known for driving excessively how many times do we see it? Its not Just Riverhead its all over the Island time to take the toys away from the little childern........

I can't believe the heartless crap that is written on here. It is a tragedy that these people were killed while volunteering, and the driver is being punished enough. It is very deheartening to hear people talking like this, what happened to "brotherhood". Vollies and "professionals" ($ is the only difference) are all doing the same job. Stop the BULLSHIT already.

Anyone rendering aid during response to or from an alarm should be covered fully for lost wages, medical needs, and other insidentals necessary to survive. Whether they are paid or volunteer.
