The Dillon Conspiracy Part 6 or the Conspiracy and the Clerk
The nature and membership of the Dillon Conspiracy (Denis Dillon, Harvey Levinson, Bob McDonald and Gerard Terry, joined by Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs and Ryan Cronin) has been previously discussed in five prior postings to this Board.
The Dillon Conspiracy and the Nassau County Clerk’s race
Much has already been written about this race. The strength of the Nassau County Democratic Party is so great that Chairman Jacobs and Bob McDonald can pull a young and inexperienced Assistant District Attorney by the name of Tricia Farrell and with straight faces proclaim her to be the best shot the Democrats have of winning the position this November. Somehow, I don’t think so.
Obviously, Bob McDonald, with his friendship with Republican District Attorney Dillon, was able to produce a “candidate” from Dillon’s office very quickly. (By the way, ever notice that the Democrats never nominate anyone from the County Attorney’s office to be a candidate? Is this a reflection on the quality of our attorneys or where they are registered to vote? These are good questions but not for today.) Anyway, one major question is why support someone who is so obviously meant to lose to the Republicans? After all, what does being an ADA have to do with being qualified to become a County Clerk? Why not support a strong Democrat such as Rocco Ianerelli? Why make a deal here? Is the County Clerk position so important? Important to whom?
Numerous theories as to the motivation behind this deal (and make no mistake, there is another deal here), have been raised. Keep in mind that the Dillon Conspiracy is involved with a broad number of races and issues. As long as the members of the Conspiracy benefit, action will be taken, whether it helps the two major political parties or not.
It was my initial thought that in January of this year, after a member of the Denenberg camp filed a complaint with the District Attorney’s office regarding election law violations committed by Town of Hempstead Republicans, that Democratic Chairman Jacobs reached a deal with Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello, Congressman Peter King and other Republicans. The deal would be that, in order to show that the Democratic Party was sorry for the filing of the above complaint, the Democrats would deliberately throw away the County Clerk’s race. After all, how important was the Clerk position to Chairman Jacobs? Everyone knows he has been focused on the County Executive and Nassau Legislative campaigns. Still, this arrangement seemed to be missing something. Recent postings on Long Island Politics may have supplied the answer.
The Political Question of the Year
Is District Attorney Dillon the godfather of Erin King Sweeney, Congressman Peter King’s daughter and political heir?
If this is true, it would explain a lot. DA Dillon is known as a person who shies away from investigating complaints against political figures. The extended investigation of Legislator Denenberg was pursued only when the Dillon Conspiracy decided that it was necessary to push Denenberg out of the way in order to promote Harvey Levinson as the Democratic candidate for TOH Supervisor. The District Attorney needs GOP support for his re-election bid and would not seek to antagonize his political base by investigating and indicting TOH Republicans. He especially would seek to avoid an investigation of his goddaughter. Obviously, he could not investigate other TOH Republicans and leave her alone; that would constitute selective prosecution.
The District Attorney has a legal and ethical conflict here. He should refer the matter to the Suffolk District Attorney or to NY State Attorney General Spitzer’s office for an objective investigation. The problem is that he knows that an objective investigation would lead to indictments including one for Erin. So he will do nothing, hoping that the matter will somehow go away and that the voters will not care. So, how should we define what Dillon has done and will do in the future? How about obstruction of justice or engaging in a cover-up of a crime, Watergate style? We’ll let the Reader decide!
The fact that the DA’s office will not proceed against Erin and the other TOH Republicans gives Mondello a green light to select Erin as the Republican candidate for County Clerk at the May 19th Republican County Convention. As an election win for Erin would benefit the Dillon Conspiracy, a losing Democratic candidate would be required. Bob McDonald and Dillon came up with Trish Farrell. Trish would never use Erin’s election law violations against her in a political campaign. Her campaign would be carefully scripted to avoid offending anyone including Republicans.
The worst nightmare for the conspiracy is the presence of a strong, independent Democrat like Ianerelli. This is someone who would discuss Erin’s petitions publicly. That is why eliminating him is a top priority to the conspiracy. The Conspiracy is more than happy to divert any and all resources of the Nassau Democratic Party in order to accomplish this scheme.
Upcoming areas to explore
Please stay tuned. We must discuss the relationship between Opus Dei and Denis Dillon and other issues. More fun in store for everyone!
