I dont know. But a case worker named Tracy will be in the news one day because a family she "investigated" went without being thouroughly investigated for a third time. I pray for the children

They have 2 years of college and extensive state mandated training. They are terribly over worked and under paid. The only time they are in the spotlight is when a fatality happens. Very very sad.

A Cps worker only needs to have a bachelors degree in anything and pass a test. No they don't need to have a background in psychology.

I agree with the fact that a person untrusted with the protection of our children should be paid more. But I also believe they should have a masters degree or better. That would warrant the increased pay. To have a person who has a bachelors degree in political science speaking with young children is beyond inadequate. Yes pay them more but require they have a background in child development and psychology. And no less then a masters degree.

whats to going rate for a Master's? So starting pay needs to be 45K plus up to 80-90K+ like PA's and Nurse Pract and teachers?. See, sometimes you will get what you pay for. Cant have it both ways.

Tracy? I wonder if she is the same investigator that has "investigated" a case three times , and these children are in need of prayers as well.
I guess if a child doesn't die the abuse is ok by cps standards.
I guess poor Tracy needs care because she is so over loaded with cases helping all the children is just too hard on her. Maybe she feels "abused".
NO she gets paid no matter what children are just folders in her file.

They start off as case worker trainees for the first year after that they are bumped up to case worker with an increas in salary. I don't care what is cost to make the job competitive. We are talking about children in the worst conditions imaginable. And why isn't CPS a State Agency? If it has a state registry it should be a state agency.

It is sad when we talk about how much they should be paid and/or what degree they have. These people should have a "feel" for these kids. If these people wanted to make more money become a doctor, lawyer, etc. , it is so sad they look at how much money they make. Tey should be looking out for the kids or not not take this very importent job!

Sure, and live in a trailer in the woods and eat cat food? Yes they should love kids, but if you want to attract solid skiled intelligent workers you gotta pay. Clowns love kids and they make more doing parties. All I'm saying is the original poster assailed them on their work ethic and skills. I countered with sometimes you get what you pay for.
Your landscaper makes waaaaay more, I bet even his foreman makes more as the CEO of Grass sits at home on his_____. You get the financial picture.

I work for Suffolk County CPS for almost 15 years. The requirements are a BA/ BS in a social science to take the test. After you are hired you attend over 12 weeks of training mandated by the state. Almost 400 hours of training. The training includes child development, social work practice and forensic interviewing techniques.
You are hired as a "Caseworker Trainee" and after a year are promoted to "Caseworker".
I hold two Master's degrees one on psychology, one in Social Work. A large portion of the staff hold MSWs, or other advances degreed. Sadly there are not enough MSWs to fill the positions so they would be hard pressed to make this a requirement (although in other states it is a requirement). The agency participates in incentive programs to enroll staff in MSW programs.
So if you think you can do a better job than those of us who are cursed at, verbally abused, and sometimes physically attacked, then take the test. It is usually given in the spring.
Oh and if you decide to call in a report don't do it anon and they complain when nothing is accomplished. CPS has to prove a case in Court, just like the police. So if the children make no disclosures, there are no issues directly observed by staff and no witnesses to have testify then nothing can be done.

CPS is technically a state agency, administered by local districts. Local CPS is under the authority of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
Due to the large geography of New York it is broken down in to local districts, but still governed by state authority.
