View Full Version : Another example that Some FDNY hates Vollies
Both FDNYandaVolly

I read an editorial in todays Newsday from a 20+ year veteran of the FDNY who claims to be in a busy firehouse. Mr. John Curcio stated that all his firehouse has is a TV and a broken pool table leg. He further stated that the tiki bar in a volly house is an example of "taxpayers money" put to work. First Joe, what house are you in? I will gladly cross the borough to see if what you say is true..I seriously doubt it!!
Mr. Curcio of FDNY..I think you are entitlted to your opinion, but when giving it, make sure you tell the truth and not just your slanted side of the story. I too am 20+ year vet with FDNY, I too am in a busy house, but in Queens. I like many other brothers on the job am also a volunteer firefighter in a town...fairly close to West Sayville where you live. In my career filled with relocations and a promotion, yes, I have seen may shithole firehouses, but I have seen some damn nice ones with commercial kitchens that would rival some of that may be seen in the finest resturaunts in Manhattan! I have seen the picture of The Tiki bar that you speak of...it looks nothing more to me than a back yard deck bar that can be purchased at any patio supply house. No question we put our time in on the job for an often thankless city, but Mr. Curcio how many times has your brother fireman tapped out for a bs injury, or better yet how many times has your brother fireman tapped out for an injury that occured in his back yard, but hobbled in to work, only to get fraudulent compensation from the city. Dont preach to the public about a broken system when you are earning a paycheck from another broken system.
Cmon brother..there is abuse in every organizaion in the world..it doesnt make it right..but to take the time to write an editorial to bash a tax based organization in the fire department..but not have the balls to bring up Sayville Schools taxes, which represent an estimated 900% higher tax hit to your wallet than your fire tax is plain upsurd and self serving.
A few hundred bucks a year gets you a bunch of vollies with a decent firehouse, a bunch of nice trucks and so what a small bar where the brothers can hang and watch a damn football game. Who the hell cares!! A few THOUSAND dollars gets you grossly over paid teachers and administrators in a failing school system...and unlike your few hundred dollar a year fireman...teachers get off weekends, holidays, and vacations of more than two months a year
I was a proud vollie before I got on the job, and will be one long after Im retired from it!!!

What would you expect them to say, they are a labor union. I am also a FDNY and Vollie for many years. I do not understand why we do this to each other. I go to Albany each year for the service, look at the wall and see the names who we lost in the LOD. I did not see anything next to their names if they got a pay check. We call ourselfs "Brother" , why not start acting like it. That means both sides!
Be safe, I have seen great fireman on both sides and I have seen bad fireman on both sides. Getting paid or being a vollie does not make you good. It is what is inside you that makes a great fireman.

Proud Volly Forever??

Relax with that, that is a cop out of a response and you know it. it was purely meant to incite a harsh reaction..so here it is..All the UFA, UFOA cares about is that volunteers are not taking jobs away from where there are paid fireman. 99% of Long Island is volunteer and that's the way it will possibly stay for the near future. The mere notion that my union doesnt want me to volunteer in an all volunteer fire department that is 37 miles from my paid firefighter job is pure crap. I take the position that I volunteer because I want to, those that choose not to volunteer simply because someone told them not to is simply their choice. NO UNION has the right to control what you do on your own time, there is such a thing as civil liberties. Some of the best bosses and fireman that I have worked with, Ive seen at volunteer fire deptment fires, parades, conventions etc.
The old days of being a volly and being on my job as being taboo are largely gone. Sure there are plenty of guys in my house that hate vollys..I dont understand why. I could care less. Take a step back and look at the picture and try and analyse why..I bet most of these guys wouldnt have a sensable answer. The brothers in my firehouse are life long friends, and some new ones that I would step in front of traffic for. I think ones hate for vollunteerism on Long Island is so misguided that they havent taken the time to step back and realize that, thats what we got out her..mostly volunteer. So relax. Nobody is taking jobs away..if they were, I would be the first in line to say something.
My union is strong, and they have laws concerning being a volly. The simple fact is that an overwhelming amount of the the brothers on the job..ARE ALSO VOLUNTEER FIREMEN.. Eventually if and when Long Island turns paid, then unions will have an absolute legitimate gripe about jobs being filled by volunteers. So while Ling Island remains largely volunteer, I will also remain one, and continue to stand by my post earlier to start this thread.
Be safe

The have f/t paid EMS in my town and these idiots continue to volly to do fire calls for free.
Duh
They will never give it up.
Without the little flashing blue lights, the tuff-guy volly t shirts and the local clubhouse, the misfits that call themselves firefighters would surely shrivel up and die.
What if no one volunteered???
They'd F****** pay guys.
By the way, please don't ever put busy and Queens in the same sentence again.

Yes, please stop volunteering so that suffolk can go to a paid department. I can't wait for my taxes to go up. Oh and then we can give the new paid firefighters parity with the lazy ass do nothing suffolk cops. That sounds like a plan. Then when it gets too expensive for the county to pay all those salaries and pensions, the county exec. can replace the paid firefighters with county sheriffs.

U.F.A. could care less, they would not get one dime of the dues. It was brought to you by a vollie who wants to get paid and can not get on the FDNY . Who would care is the IAFF, they would get the dues. I respect vollies and the job you do. I also know getting a pay check does not make you a "good fireman". So please stop trying to make this site something it is not. I worked next to many of you at the "Pile " you did a great job for us and thank you. WE should not be kidding each other's ass like this. and are all part of the brotherhood . Now if some jerk wants to say something, OK I understand, but I still respect you all for what you did for us and what you do everyday . I do not not think you are on the job. If you are "God help us ". If you were on during 9/11 you would know how much the vollie's helped us. They were on the pile, in our fire houses, attended all the funnels and let us use their FD for a beer fest. I do not have to explain anything to you, but I worked in Lad 43, Lad 108, Lad 58, R2, R1 while I was on the job from 1966 to 1999. The years we did not go to EMS calls and still did 9,000 for some units. If you are on the job, then cut the shit. I went down to the pile for months looking for the 40 guys I knew, what did you do? Shut the fuck up and go away. Thank you to all the vollies who helped, a lot of people will never forget that
