Don't blame the State. The problem stems back to the lawsuit Brewington brought on behalf of homeowners in run down Roosevelt who were jealous of people who actually took care of their homes & had good market value. Instead of fighting the lawsuit, Suozzi's people signed an agreement to provide annual appraisal values that the assessments were based on - and then brought in out of state imbeciles who appraised the values at $100,000 more than they were actually worth - because real estate was in a boom market & the appraisers didn't have the guts to put the brakes on.
Every year they added another $100,000 to the market value of my house. The taxes are based on that. Even though the appraisals were 100% over reality, the taxes could only be lowered by no more than 25% of what the county assessors office calculated. So you lost every year, even if you won & people whose home values were really overinflated - like republican areas - will never recoup that.
Meanwhile people with political pull, like county legislators that Suozzi needed - who had their home undervalued all this time - will never have to make up all those years.
That's the problem. You don't go by market value in an hyper inflated real estate market using overinflated appraisals to set taxes.
