View Full Version : Why Can't A Republican Win?
Is it possible to examine this question with forward-thinking explanations, instead of the tired, old backwards-thinking rhetoric? November is just around the corner.

Well it is the voters fault. They are still judging us on past performance in Nassau, problems in Albany and bad deals from Washington. Just unreal!
What is it that the dem's are looking for in a candidate? Are the dems looking for anything besides they are not a republican? In the TONH the republicans come out in force for their candidates but can't overcome the great neck Jew factor. Why specifically won't they vote for republican?

I don't know since, by your post, you seem so tolerant.
Considering that the Dems have a proven record of building surpluses while the Republicans bankrupted Nassau, it's hard for the GOP to make inroads.
Besides, look at the demographics of the Town. There are now more Dems than Republicans (a significant, and recent, development). And Great Neck is not the sole reason. Port Washington, Roslyn and New Cassel provide big pluralities to the Dems, and even Republican areas, like Mineola, Manhasset and New Hyde Park, are trending favorably for the Dems, due to a combination of demographic shifts and acceptance on the part of local GOP voters.
By the way, the "Jew factor" is no way to describe voter tendencies. I'm not even Jewish and that offends me.

Oh Please.. I am Jewish and that comment does not offend me. It is a fact that Jewish people from Great Neck, and Roslyn only vote for Democrats. The Republicans could run the best candidate out there and that person would still lose since the people from Great Neck are so programed to pull the lever for row B they don't have an independent thought in their heads. The only way that is going to change is if the Republican party spends a LOT of money in Democratic areas to change the mind set of the older people living there, and seriously try to recruit new people as they move in before they become indoctrinated.

Hey, bigot! The GN "Jews" vote for Mike Balboni. It's the only way he can win. Care to reconsider your argument?

No Think about it the reason Balboni wins is because his district has many Republican areas in it outside the town of north hempstead. The 7th SD includes the communities of Floral Park, Elmont, Stewart Manor, Bellrose, Franklin Square, and goes as far east as Hicksville. Balboni does not win because the Democrats vote for him. He wins because the district has many Republican communities outside the TONH in it.
As a Jew, I am NOT offended by the poster's reference to the Jewish block of votes from Great Neck. Nor do I think the poster intended any disrespect. The Jewish vote (a la "Jew") is a political fact of life in North Hempstead. The other poster who commented that those Jews would vote for anyone who was a democrat is correct. Talk about intolerant and bigotted, the Great Neck Jews are the definition of it.

The 1989 loss of Kiernan to Zwirn and the 91 loss of the Town Board are due to several factors, the major one being the proposed Incinerator in Port Washington.
Had the GOP modified its position on this issue, they might have survived. However, since they did not they lost credibility among Republican voters.
Due to the incinerator issue itself, the NH Republican chances in NH are gone for a generation - a political generation lasts 30-40 years. Earliest comeback would be somewhere around 2019, unless some similar catastrophy affects the Democrats.

Almost 15 years later and the NH Republicans still have no credibility with the voters. That's what keeping the hacks around will get you. NH is Democratic for as long as the Dems want it.
Maybe its a combination of the changing demographics in Nassau County and the relentless anti-Republican reporting from Newsday and News 12?

Channel 55

Channel 55 has been giving alot of good publicity to Tom Suozzi too. And Tom has not been resting. Did you get his colorful rah rah flyer? Peterson's campaign seems to be non-existent - he's not even recruiting new people to help out and you see and hear absolutely nothing from him. Suozzi will win and frankly, he deserves to. Not because of his track record, but because he's working harder to win - while Peterson seems to be putting on less of a show then even Bruce Bent did.
Working harder? Doing what, exactly?

Giving out press releases and holding media conferences. Running all over Nassau County on a bus giving talks to citizens of each and every town, village, community and city in Nassau County. Holding town meetings for every employee in every agency in Nassau County who works for him. Mailing out big, colorful brochures with proganda spitting out all the wonderful accomplishments he decided he'd like to (undeservedly) take credit for. Like that. The kind of thing that puts him in a generally positive and likable light in the minds of each and every voter in Nassau County - the regular people who don't bother with these websites, club meetings or County Governance and who just are too busy living their life to look much further than a smiling face telling them how much better off they now are and how Nassau County has been rescued from a dismal bankruptcy. I think that's what he's doing. Whereas Peterson - I don't know where he is and if I didn't read it in Newsday months ago after looking for it specifically because I read about his announcement here - I seriously wouldn't even know there was another candidate for County Executive. And I have a Peterson bumper sticker on my car!
Let's return to the point what do we republicans do to take back the majority on the town board, since at large elections are tough for us becuase of Great Neck. Who can we run in each of the non great neck districts that will have a good chance in November this year or in two years. 6-1 votes are not helping our cause.
Got news for you...there are next to no 6-1 votes on the Town Board. Practically everything is 7-0.
By the way, the Dems will control at least 4 of the council districts well into the future, with the Reps winning 1 or maybe 2 of those seats. Townwide, the future is even worse for the Reps.
You are getting ahead of yourself. The Republicans have a strategy, and as far as I am concerned, its working nicely. Give Suozzi enough rope to hang himself 100 feet high. Why spend campaign money now when you can embarrass Suozzi when it really counts? You people don't give the GOP enough credit.

I'm a republican and I'd like to know what's working too? I talk to people - just to get a feel. They all think Suozzi is great and that the GOP bankrupted the County - some don't even know the name of the guy who is running against Suozzi - or think he's running unopposed. They skim through Newsday, watch the news at night - that's it. I tell them to come look at this site - nobody has time or much interest in computing. I don't see anything working.
