So now they want to borrow against the Pension fund. Did these people not see what happaned to SS? If they had never borrowed against SS it would be flush today. And what idiot decided to have employees stop paying into the fund? The fund, already veru solvent could be looking even better. The fund should be left alone although the burden of future payments shoud be shited to the employees

The US Government and Wall Street want to destroy UNIONS and PENSIONS.

This is a must if they are to wipe out the middle class which the CORPORATE ELITE need to happen.

You can see the daily assault in their MASS MEDIA bashing pension funds and anyone who has job security and a healthy retirement.

The global elite need to eliminate then to have a total SLAVE POLULATION struggling to survice till the day they die.

Correction: Obama wants to destroy the American way of life when he's not on his blame America tour. His redistribution of the wealth is what is going to destroy the country. He has his union thugs pounce on his opposition when they get to loud.

Elite, I think not. These are middle class people that do not work for the government and are being taxed to support the pensions and benefits of civil servants. This is not a class war but a need for reform at all levels of government.

People seem to forget that most civil service employees did not get paid as much as private sector workers, they did not get bonus at the end of the year, or employee discounts/gifts, they did with less most of thier working life, and are now getting the pension benefits, the private sector worker made more while working and now is mad because those "public sector workers" are getting pensions and they are not., sorry tough sh*^$#

I took a job that paid ALOT less than others because of the benefits. We all make choices in life....I pay taxes too. Isn't is odd that since the sh..hit the fan EVERYONE wants to blame the civil servants. Not too long ago I recall these same people laughing about how much less I made then they. I work hard for the money...please do not include all civil service employees in the "BLOAT" zone. Most of us are humble.

The reform nonsense comes top down. The local governments are being short changed by the state. They are on orders to break down the middle class by the corporate run government.

The point is that the governement units should NOT be permitted to borrow their contributions from the system. The need ot make the hard choices to make it possible for them to fund their responsibilities.

Every singele action by our government "leaders" is gutless, pushing off hard choices so that thye can be re-elected. This=e for a REAL taxpayer revolt.

Fair point but there are some unions that are way out of line and actually make more than the median salary for the are like the Police and scjhool administrators.

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says he won’t let the Legislature borrow from the state pension fund as part of a gimmick unusual even by Albany standards.

The proposal under discussion in recent days would let state and local governments borrow $6 billion from the public worker pension fund in order to make their required payments to the same fund. Supporters say that would be less expensive than borrowing on the open market and would avert painful cuts or tax increases.

Those required contributions increased dramatically over the past several years as the pension fund’s investments were hit by Wall Street’s meltdown.

The borrowed money would be paid back with interest starting in 2013.

DiNapoli, the fund’s sole trustee, says Monday he won’t allow it.

In case you've been in a cave, the cops make A WHOLE LOT MORE than just a livable wage. And are you going to pretend that LI cops walk into the teeth of danger every day? Please stop.

I have proposed the question many times over how much the big mouths on this site think cops, corrections etc.. should make. I would love to see what half-assed answer is given. Due to the lack of response, one can come to the conclusion that if its more than their mother gives them for an allowance, its too much.

Cops are fairly paid, except for the occasional OT abuses that have been reported.

The nissue is that there are not enough cops on the street, too many at HQ and the pension reforms need to be adopted.

Teachers on LI are fairly paid as well. The issue with teachers is that class sizes are too small and thus there are too many highly paid professionals in the classrooms, compared to just a few decades ago. Pension reform is needed here too, but the big nut is the number of teachers.

Agree with above: districts and towns and counties should not be able to borrow their contributions. But, Tom DiNapoli should moderate next year's contribution amounts since the market has gone up since he increased the contribution rates.

I for one would not begrudge the cops or teachers their pay, but I would be mad if their unions stand in the way of needed pension reforms or class size adjustments.

The Leg needs to pass comprehensive school funding and pension reforms now or it'll be too late.

Hope I'm still around to see them squeeze every last penny out of you, your kids and grandkids (if they're stupid enough to stay here) but for me, "I'm leavin on a jetplane, don't plan on comin back again"..............so I'll be watchin from a distant!

Dont let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. Theres a reason Nassau Taxes are so high. Its the 11th richest County in America. Of course if you go some place where your house cost half as much your taxes will be half of what they are here, everyone there will for the most part make half of what they make here. Long Island is one of the best places to live, its a supply and demand economy.

It's one of the most expensive places to live because we have too much government, layers and layers of expensive government with officials in certain entities making sky high salaries. The school budgets are unjustifiably out of this world costly to tax payers....remember the salary, pensions media coverage for no show attorneys??? It's an example.

No, the lawyer pension thing was an example of corruption, which goes on everywhere. YOu taxes are based on your property value, so when your living in a hime worth probably at least a half a million of course they are high. ANd one of the main reasons homes cost so much is the incredible schools we have. We live in a supply and demand economy, if Long Island was overpriced peoplw wouldnt live here

Cops: Man fatally shot escaping kidnappers in Woodmere

Originally published: June 15, 2010 12:18 PM

A Woodmere man suffered a fatal gunshot wound early Tuesday while fleeing a moving vehicle in which armed assailants had abducted him and his friend, Nassau police said.

Wounded and bleeding from the chest, the man in his early 20s clambered through backyards before collapsing onto a neighbor's patio while begging for help, police said. He died in the hospital, nearly nine hours after the 2 a.m. shooting.

The assailants who abducted the men shortly before the shooting, are being sought by the police, said chief spokesman Det. Lt. Kevin Smith.
