 the village of nissequogue continues to screw the residents out of what is best for them. they underhandedly along with some losers on the fire dept. screwed a young man that has invested 10 years in the fire department, and is not only more knowledgeable than the newly elected chief......but he trainned him. the young man who was to be 1st assistant also a long time member, was replaced by an inexperienced member who puts the residents lives at risk. once again....richard smith and his cronies have screwed the village residents.....the members of the fire department that went along with this disgusting scheme will probably some day be the mayor, or at least a member of the village board.

You people live in one of the most beautiful places on Long Island.
But how long that will last will be determined by what happens around you concerning affordable housing activists and developers who want higher density housing in Smithtown.
You natives have a lot more serious things to worry about believe me!

As a village resident, a member of the Fire Dept. and a friend of this young man, I believe he was not the best person for the job. I was on scene may times to see first hand that his commanding of many scenes was not in the best interest of dept. or patient care. He has not matured enough to handle the position. Im sure someday he will realize this and at that time he will make a good chief. Soory that you can't be the youngest Chief in the history of Nisseqougue.

i too am a member of the nqfd, and a village resident and to say that this young man's leadership was not first rate is just not true. either you are one of the "newly brainwashed" members, or just don't understand the makings of a good chief. either way to call yourself a friend is pathetic, and clearly untrue.

Maybe I don’t understand the makings of a good chief, and you obviously have not been on scene as many times as I have, that’s a fact. But Bret seemed to forget the basics of fire scene operations, like a good size up and getting your hands dirty because we are always shorthanded. Because of this people will get hurt. I know first hand because I am one of them. Example, the Valley Path fire, there was no proper size up; otherwise he would not have sent us in through the wrong door which took to long to locate the fire. He had to be told by Mike G. and the 2 nd Asst chief Jim Burke, to help move the line. Keep in mind that Burke was the line officer who moving the line for me and ventilating. All of which could have been done by Bret from the outside. How long does it take to 24 neighboring departments? Needless to say I now have a pinched nerve in my neck from the ceiling that came down on me because it took to long to advance the line.
And what about patient care during an EMS call. Should the patient have to wait because a Chief or Assist. Chief doesn’t want to be “E”. I’ve seen this first hand many times with Bret. On a recent CO emergency he 24 Smithtown because he didn’t want to be the “E”. I must admit that I am not an EMT yet, but I ride the ambulance more than you and most members do.
I’ve taken the ICS class and understand that I.C. ‘s only job is to run the scene, but that only works in the perfect world. The reality of the NQFD is that there are not enough active members so we all must do multiple jobs and get our hands dirty until help arrives.
There are many more examples of why he wasn’t the best “kid” for the job, but I think I’ve made my point already. Jim Burke has proved to me in the past few years, that he is the right person to lead this department. And I apologize to Bret for not letting him know how I felt sooner.

4-5-53 your multiple jobs of which you are unqualified to do certainly puts the residents lives in danger! i feel sorry for a person in distress in your wonderful village...having members that have the same mentality as you is scary...nqfd should pack it in and the village should pay a real fd to protect the residents!!!
