For the most part they are a total waste of tax $. Some have phones, cars, radios, etc. What is so important that they need all that for. Is that so they can call in a toilet paper order. Commissioners should do the job they were elected to and took an oath to do. Like haywood said, most are buddies of Commissioners that were given a job. I used to hear stories about 1 in the town of Islip that was pathetic.

Good god, for how many years did the boad do it all themselves?
Now we need DMs. Lets se the the board found out out to PAY there friend[s] or relitives a nice chunk of change and get away with it. FD boards are going the same way school dist. boards did. Take anyrhing and all, lie, bury, and hide the money.
I'll bet you there ain't a DM that was not a close friend [ very close] or related to a board member.
I find it very odd that out of no-where the boards need a baby-sitter. HHHUUUMMM do we see a patern here?
Like the man said
Follow the MONEY.
But bet you can't because the board goes into CLOSED session.
getting better

Well if they can't make their buddies a district manager for cash, How about inventing a new position of Saftey Coordinator. Chiefs car, respond to alarms(sig 2,21,28 etc..) an office, a nextel, no clear responsibilities on paper. Gets out on 13s and checks out houses with no gear, just like a chief. I didn't vote for this guy. Selden does it again...don't worry as soon as the $6,000,000.00 bond vote goes through he can be called the district manager. Oh yeah free vacations for everyone. "just put a signal 3 over for that EMT" everyone's out of town.

Who has a manager and do they do anything?
Who has a manager and do they do anything?
Coram has one.
He mostly walks around all day smoking NASTY cigars in a NON SMOKING BUILDING. Usually with no pants on.
He has also been known to get drunk in public places and get up on a table and drop his pants.

Smithtown FD has 2 DM's...go figure.

who are the two in smithtown
Unless they were Grandfathered, District Managers have to meet the criteria established under the Civil Service Guidelines. Many of the districts that do have DM's are usually the larger ones and whether you believe it or not, do save Tax Dollars in the long run.
As a Commissioner of a medium sized District without a DM, its tuff to find the time to do everything and still spend time with my family. While Commissioners take an oath to oversee the Fire Districts financial obligations and operational items, they (Commissioners) can not know all the elements necessary within the District they are elected, plus have the time to work a regular job, also in most cases volunteer to be a firefighter or EMS responder and oversee the district that they represent.
Years ago, yes it was easier, but in this current day and age a near impossibility. Pretty much like being a Chief, its nothing like it was years ago, standards, regulations and the technical aspects of the job are all major challengers, but then again many of the people who post here have never done that job either.
.
Most of the individuals that post on these pages should really know what you’re talking about before you post and usually don't! Instead of bashing the Boards that take the time to look into hiring a DM and sometimes do, you should applaud them for trying to run their Fire Districts in a correct and efficient manner.
one only

Guest / Commissioner, right on the money! Six years and I'm giving it up because of all the gang that "knows how to do it", but seem to only have time for opinions, not action.

NO there are 2 DM's in Smithtown...one ACTUAL DM and his "Assistant" DM...(the assistant is the one who was already working there, applied for the job and didn't get it...so the "assistant" position was a consolation prize)

d/m are wipers for the board
You sound like you went for a position and didn't get it!
I think Centereach has 2 DM's also, but one may be an assistant.
It may aslo be a situation as a Commissioner posted earlier, where the district is large and could most likely warrant it.
