Ok -- first off -- I like Gary -- I think over his history, he's done a very good job...BUT; He hasn't successfully negotiated a contract in what -- 15 years? the recent arbitration award about missed overtime went over like a lead balloon --- what was his line? "OT isn't guraranteed? "I guess for some, it is. He doesn't work the 4 extra days for about 5.00 an hour like we do. he NEVER appears at the precicnts -- for that matter, neither does the rest of the board.....and he'll pick the smallest slight against a favored son and wage a war over it, leaving the rank and file to suffer the wrath of the equally dense 1490 gang of idiots. Gary and his gang can talk about the cool aid all they want -- it goes both ways.....

First of all maybe the last contract was not the best but you have to give him credit for the last 16yrs of contracts. The guy will honestly fight tooth and nail for his members and I have no personal connection to him other than I am a PBA member.

you say he has never negotiated a contract?.....So, we became one of the highest paid police depts in the nation, really because everyone loves us so much......please, you're killing us here....the man and the dedicated people who serve, have had a hand in every contract since they began their terms...Any arbitrary awards, are a direct result of all the hard work that gary and his board brings to the table...he is a fierce fighter for his members and without him, i can't imagine where we would be today....[/i]

Nassau's contracts came in part to the work of Mahoney(RIP) of the Suffolk PBA. It's not hard to piggyback onto what your neighbor is getting in the arbitration game.

Kunk,

You are far removed and have been retired for many years. Sit back, drink your "kool-aid" and read on for the truth. Here are some highlights. We'll start 3 contracts ago, when Gary first allowed a zero to be negotiated and when lagged raises were born. Lagged raises are those which are received in any month other than January. For instance a raise that takes effect in July is a built in zero for six months. For that year, it appears to be a raise when Gary spins it on paper and indicates the percentage, when in fact it actually amounts to almost nothing. Remember lagged holidays and overtime? This is when Gary first allowed our holidays to be lagged as well a percentage of our overtime. Bad precedents that still have negative affects on us today. Two contracts ago: more lagged holidays and more lagged raises, kiss good-bye the family sick days and say hello to sick leave management. Oh yeah ... how about this ... AA for BOG!!! What a scam that was and still is. Now the current contract: a zero again, loss of a holiday, 2 lagged raises which amount to another zero, the loss of the higher calculation for the overtime and termination rates, 4 added work days per year (quarterly days) and still no resolution on the lagged payroll money the county stole from us many years ago. Gary did however, arrange for a golden parachute for his retired executive board guys. They got a guaranteed overtime award retroactive for many years, the likes of which only a lotto winner can appreciate. Guaranteed overtime without ever working it for the executive board. Kunk, Gary is a huge sellout. Ask the young guys who had to move back in with their parents, take out enormous equity loans and sell off some assets just to survive when they got hired at below poverty level wages. The negatives far out weigh the positives and the negative affects are exponential. Suffolk continues to drive a wedge between us and them. I can go on and on and further elaborate, but hopefully you got the point. Live long and prosper.

agree with you

kerplunk,

You hit the nail on the head. How about this tid bit of info? .... recently heard at a local political meeting, that Suozzi is agressively seeking the PBA's endorsement. In return, the membership will not have to work anymore Quarterly Days, yet still receive the financial benefit. It is a major coincidence that both Gary and Tom are up for reelection this fall. Definitely look for something to make them both look good in the memberships eyes. Just another behind the scenes deal for both these self-servers. It sounds all good, but how can Tom justify this? What is this really gonna cost the PBA? What about the P.A.C. fund? Like a married couple, they fight eachother so hard with their same arrogant, pompous attitudes that they are now forming an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" relationship. Just another sellout!!!

Yes its true, T.S. would LOVE to get the PBA endorsement--(and yes he's seeking it). although he does not need it to win but he wants to be governor more than C.E. and this would help. Gary still does not trust him and rightfully so. The only way in the world that he would endorse T.S. (and i doubt he will) is if he got substantially more benefits for his membership. I may not always agree w/Gary but I have to disagree with anyone who says he isn't the hardest working most effective union prez. in the state.

Hey Notacop, I don't know what kind of work you do, nor do I really care, but if your paying Union Dues and you don't have the hardest working people representing you then you are getting ripped off. Thats right, Gary works very hard, for himself and the membership, isn't that what a Union President and the rest of his representatives are suppose to do??? And if they didn't i would vote them out of office. Hell if I was in his position I would try for the moon and stars too, because you never know what you can get unless you ask for it. I for one am very happy to have him as my Union President. So NotACop, maybe you should look at your own union and try to fix your problems, I know someone you could take lessons from to start your change, stop bitching and start doing. Even the SOA has some real loser Pct. representatives, I just hope to God that those people never get into a position to have to make a real desicion, because if they do then the SOA will really go down the tubes.

get real MIKE

Gary takes care of # 1 and the membership is secondary - wake up Mike and look around at his personal deals over the years.

ARe you kidding. No payback days? Don't count on it. Infact, count on 2 more per year with the next contract!
