To it's credit, Grumman never had a union, yet paid it's employees similar wages and took care of its employees. Softball leagues, picnic grounds at Calverton, etc. etc. showed that the corporate bigwigs knew their salaries came from their workers and gave them a little bit more.

I hate to be picky, but you are wrong in your "true volunteer definition" The volunteer firefighter was incepted not out of cost savings, rather out of a need for a service to be provided. The very definition of volunteer is "a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking" There is absolutely no mention of compensation as you say!!

You may have valid points on ways certain fire departments spend taxpayer money, but you should conclude your rant with..this is my opinion..not fact!!
