Why is an Amityville Chief's truck parked in a driveway in wantagh alot

right near the 7-11 by the SS pkwy. What's the deal? Thank God I don't live in Amityville and depend on a fast response from a Fire Chief for my call for assistance. That's a lot of gas/maintenance to respond to a call outside of the County.

The reason that you see Volunteer FD personnel and their vehicles in other locales is because the people that live in certain communities DON'T WANT TO VOLUNTEER in their local FD.

Case in point, about 3 years ago, I was told that the then Fire Chief from Wyandanch went to the local high school to recruit volunteers for the Juniors and eventually to become firefighters. One of the young "rapper" wanabees in a doo-rag responded to the Chief's question on becoming a volunteer with, "How much you (sic) get paid?"

That should pretty much explain why it is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO RECRUIT in Wyandanch, North Bellport, North Amityville, Gordon Heights and now, Hempstead Village. These folks don't even keep their property up to livable standards, many collect welfare and father numerous children out-of-wedlock and you expect them to volunteer for their community in a potentially dangerous job. What a joke! But sellin' dope and crack to make quick money, datz easy.

If you don't believe me, attend a parade at one of these departments. You'll see what I talking about...

Is it true that you can, literally, walk to the station? Do you know what its like to have to find parking space?

Theory, Vol Firemen are furnishing a service to their communities and are putting their lives at risk. Realistically, The Vol FD Members are no diff than Auxiliary Police Officers, yet VFD:

1 - Receive a PENSION - APO's dont and
2 - Can't take home vehicles like VFD's - APO's cant.

As a retired NYPD APO, I can tell you that the CO of the Unit learned that Aux Pol vehicles were being used by Regulars. The official word was N-O!
Not authorized to be used by anyone except AP's in an official capacity.

And there were good reasons why! AP vehicles were older and were mainly hand-me-down vehicles. When one of the geniuses got into an accident or of the car naturally died - it would sometime takes years before another vehicle came along to replace it.

Yet, even after retiring from the program, I still see AP vehicles being driven by PO's.

I hear many of the arguments here. As compelling as it is unless the vehicle is authorized and it is operated by an actual Chief on-call or someone in an official capacity (training perhaps?)...I dont see how or why it is in someone's personal driveway - should that be the case.
If it is being utilized in an unofficial capacity - it is really stupid not just bec youre wasting the taxpayer's money for gas and wear-and-tear (which leads to the need of purchasing another vehicle), but what happens if for any reason it doesnt work and it is needed in a real emergency? What happens if on route to answering a 911 call there is an accident? You can lose your insurance on that vehicle?

These actions should really be thought out, discussed and agreed upon - to be placed on the record. If there is ever an investigation or the need to scrutinize, everyone will have their rears covered.

Official cars should be used for just official business.
