The lead detective who investigated the stabbing death of Ecuadorean immigrant Marcelo Lucero was to return to the witness stand in Riverhead Tuesday in the trial of Jeffrey Conroy.

Det. John McLeer will be cross-examined by Conroy's attorney, William Keahon of Hauppauge, before State Supreme Court Justice Robert W. Doyle.

McLeer, who is expected to be the last witness called by Assistant District Attorney Megan O'Donnell, testified Monday that Conroy told police he stabbed Lucero, 37, on Nov. 8, 2008.

McLeer testified that Conroy told a friend and co-defendant Nicholas Hausch, "I stabbed him."

Conroy signed a four-page statement in which he admitted the stabbing, the detective testified.

On cross-examination Monday, McLeer said he accepted Conroy's explanation that he injured his hands wrestling with a friend earlier that evening.

Keahon suggested Conroy's statement to Hausch indicated the stabbing was an accident.

"I believe a person's actions speak their intent," McLeer said.

Conroy, 19, of Medford, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter.
