Enough about the overtime. It's a highly exaggerated issue. The few top earners are not reflective of the majority of C/O's or Deps. Most of us just work here and there to supplement our salaries and try to eke out a living around here like everyone else.

The real issues are buildings that are falling apart and the apparent ignorance of this administration to the concerns and needs of the staff. I know we would support Demarco or any candidate that extended his/her respect and demostrated with actions that the needs of the staff come before political concerns. This is a County whose leadership proposes a mandatory 20% hiring of candidates from towns where crime is rampant. We may as well hand out applications to bail-outs, along with bus fare for the ride to Wyandanch. What are we dealing with here? Our leadership doesn't seem to know.

We've had enough lip service. This is an administration that had the audacity to state at a union meeting that "seniority only means how long you've been here". On these jobs, especially Corrections, with a 25 year retirement, seniority is ALL you have. Take that away from a senior Officer and you've rendered his career meaningless.

It is apparent that Tisch will have a tough time beating DeMarco if DeMarco gets the extra lines as evryone seems to think he will (I, C, WFP). However, if DeMarco does get those lines and Tisch still decides to run...it could get interesting. No doubt, DeMarco will have it much easier with the deputies and the correction officers behind them. They are a very politically potent force and will be very active getting their man elected. But, Tisch could decide that if he is going down, he will not make it easy for DeMarco. Tisch is a former Marine and a tough egg. Tisch can decide that since he will get absolutely no support from the unions, that he will become the fiscal conservative watchdog. What a lot of you guys seem to forget is that all of the voters in Suffolk County vote for sheriff. Not just the deputies, c.o.s, their family and friends. The county jail has really pissed off both fiscal conservatives (there are still a few left) and social justice advocates (Maurice Mitchell and company). Tisch very well can't back out of his initial support of the full project but I notice that he has toned down the "Build a Taj Mahal Pork Barrel Deluxe" and has adopted a middle of the road, scaled down version which is being partially funded by the state. DeMarco, on the other hand, is stuck between a political rock and a hard place. He can't very well sound like Dave Bishop (release all the prisoners and put the rest up in tents). DeMarco has to appease the guys who brought 'em to the dance. I hear that Tisch has cracked down on the overtime. Smart move. Tisch knows that the employees aren't backing him so why not play the "fiscal conservative" card? Tisch has nothing to lose. He can now go in the opposite direction. As I said before, if the only people voting in this election were the deputies and jail guards, Tisch has no chance. As much as evreyone here feels that they are being set upon, they may not get it through their head that there are a lot of frustrated tax payers out there that don't necessarily feel their pain. Yes, being a deputy or a jail guard is not a piece of cake. But, the average Joe out there isn't living the Life of Riley either. There are a ton of guys who don't make any where near even the base salary (forget all of the overtime) of you guys. Yeah, I know. They could have taken the test and they could be doing what you are doing. Sure, but they didn't. In the privacy of the voting booth, do you think for one second that you're bashing them is going to perusade them to vote for DeMarco? What about all of the business owners who aren't on the "Irish Welfare"? They worry about increased taxes, competition, rising costs, salaries, health care for employees, and staying one step ahead of bankruptsy. Do you think that those guys worry about the condiition of the jail. I know they are pissed off about guys making over 100G just in overtime. I know it isn't everybody but the public don't. They only know what they read in Newsday. Many of these business owners have an overwhelming amount of responsibility (they can't take sick days) and for a lot less pay. Private sector employees aren't feeling sorry for you guys either. A guy is making maybe 30G, working his tail off, trying to pay off his college student loans. If he don't produce, he doesn't have a job; even a job where he makes a lot less tahn you for doing a whole lot more work. Of course, he could take the test and join the gravy train but not everybody can work for the government. Or can they? So, guys. There is no doubt that Vinny DeMarco is going to sail to victory but Tisch can make it very hard for them. Also, don't act surprised when DeMarco can't deliver all the promises he has made to you. Guys will say anything during a campaign. What's more important is what happens after the election. Be careful of what you pray for...you may get it! DeMarco could (and should) handily win the election but that is when his problems may start.

'Pardon'- you make some good points, and I agree with you on the Unions backing of DeMarco. We were forced-fed Tisch during the last election. It was clear that his opponent wasn't going to win, yet our Union felt it was necessary to rally around him, without him having been given the oath yet. Sure enough, now their stance is somewhat defensive but far too late.
I realize the average citizen of this county neither cares about Officer's concerns or can sympathize with conditions as they are, after all, 'it's just a jail'. That's fine. We fully understand our efforts will always be kept out of the public eye until something catastrophic happens, usually regarding an inmate. Again, these are the realities of our jobs and are not arguable.
It is clear, however, that Tisch is not responsible for the years of neglect afforded the jails and for the problems we now have. I've seen it written here before that the primary problem is the antiquated design of the buildings and their ongoing deterioration. It's not the low bails, alternatives to incarceration, or improper sentencing that are the problems. To suggest otherwise is reflective of the public's ignorance to this subject, as well as the media's continuing infatuation with the likes of Maurice Mitchell and Dave Bishop.

FYI I believe the union owns the jeep it doen't lease it. The union office is owned and is probably worth more than 3 times what was paid for it. All unions give their presidents vehicles. Actually most unions pay for vehicles for all their board members. ( the deputies don't) DeMarco probably doesn't use a county car because you can never have a passenger in it who is not in the dept. If you are in Albany w/ a Senator or assembly person you cannot drive them anywhere. If you want to take a legislator to lunch you cannot drive him/her either. I have been to Albany w/ DeMarco and some other members and we all go in the jeep. You are obviously not a deputy or you would know that the union doesn't waste money, the net worth is higher than it has ever been.

I am a Deputy, I pay for Vinnie's car and at the time "we", (the membership), made the descision to lease that vehicle after hearing valid reasons for it. It mattered so little that I don't even remember why "we" did it. Vin has done a good job for the majority of his members. He works towards better conditions for the guys, better wages, and a decent workplace. He has done a lot to improve each of those items. I find him to be a very honest and forthright individual, which means he probably won't win an election to the Sheriff's post. To win that you have to be a war - torn political hack, you have bring with you a couple of "has - been" political morons as under sheriff's, and a cast of charactors that rivals any three stooges movie ever made, (except without the slapping . . . well maybe some slapping).

Recently Newsday posted OT stats for a lot of Deps and C/O's. They asked Vinnie for a response to their article, hidden within forty minutes of interview was one comment Vinnie made which shed a poor light on the Sheriff's administrative abilities. That comment was printed. In response to that article Sheriff Tisch has taken actions against Deputies working within his ranks. As if the job didn't have enough problems - the boss has now decided to take out his anger at Vinnie on the poor slobs who do the work day in and day out. Nice job Sheriff. I for one never thought Vinnie had a shot at the Sheriff job simply because he would have needed a high percentage of Deps and CO's behind him to be successful. Once again you've done it Mr. Tisch - you have done what no other before you could have, you've united Deps as a group, and now the CO's are on board as well. Job well done, you've all but sealed your fate as a one term dictator. You have more employees pissed off than even Mahoney and Morris could manage. So back to those rally cries - "Bring back Mahoney", or better yet the phrase I hear so often around the office these days;

I dont want anyone elses job, I want to keep mine. I also want things to more like they were before these bullying punks came into our workplace. Yeah If Demarco gets in he could hurt us, but how bad of a beating do we have to take from these morons before Demarco seems appealing to us? I'm done with the current administartion, Murphy, Denzler, all of them should just dry up and blow away. If Demarco gets in and messes with us, I guess we got had, but I will vote for him anyway - just to send these other guys packing. Today most of the people working within the Sheriff's Office will learn that Undersheriff (DUMB), Sullivan has ordered all Deputies out of First District Court. He has also ordered the jobs filled with Corrections Officers. I guess Tisch heard how many of us were going to support Demarco and felt he had to pull off some huge jesture for the Corrections side to ward off the support going towards Vinny. Nice try Sheriff, but I can't be bought. You see rumor has it that the County was about to sign off on a contract that they had bargained over with the Deps. That contract would have given all C/O's the same raise via the "me too" clause inserted in the last contract. At that juncture Under Dumb, (Sullivan) - who was in the room throughout the contract talks advised the County that the Sheriff wouldn't be on board with such a contract. The result was that the deal fell through and the Deps are now in mediation and looking at binding arbitration. Rumor has it the first year of that proposed contract settlement would have been the Deps biggest yearly raise ever. In 1989, 90, 91, & 92 the Deps got a four year contract with a couple of five % raises in there. If this was the largest single raise ever, then it would have to have been more than 5%. So this Sheriff screwed every single C/O out of the same raise. Now to quell the rumors of C/O's crossing over in support of Vinny, he throws us a bone in an attempt to keep us stupid. Yeah, I'd be happy to get District Court, and I think we should be there - but not like this, and not at the price it cost us. When I retire I can't take District Court with me, I could have figured in those extra percentage points on my pension though. So, I for one am not buying it Mr. Tisch, you don't do a damn thing for us for three and a half years, then when you hear that a lot of us are actually using our heads this time and about to show you the curb, you pull this scam out of your a$$ and expect us to bight. Well thanks a lot, we'll take it. But we'll still be showing you the damn door at the end of this year - hows that sound to you?

Firts off the SCPD originally ran District Court than it was taken over by the Sheriffs Dept. Period. C/Os on the inside and Deputies doing the transporting, I was there also. Now with that said, 12 years ago the C/Os were tossed out of D/C on Christmas Eve. No warning no nothing and guess what...it sucked. At the time it was purely political and although many C/Os got made at the Deputies it in fact had nothing to do with the line Officer. That was 12 long years ago. The Deputies that run D/C now weren't even in the department than and infact some probably weren't out of middle school. IT WAS WRONG 12 YEARS AGO AND IT IS WRONG NOW. Do I feel C/Os should run D/C - yeas, but no9t in this fashion. There is more than enough room for expansion on the part of the Deputies and if done properly by a SMART ADMINISTRATION they would seek out those positions and slowly ease Deputies out of Corrections work over a period of time. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY WE C/OS SHOULD GET D/C BACK!

What Tisch, Murphy and the band of idiots have done here is just attempt to drive a wedge between the two divisions. He saw them uniting on a common cause and got scared plus it's pay back for DeMarco daring to throw his name into the ring.

I would hope the C/O don't fall foe this crap and I don't believe they will. At the same time I hope the Deputies relize that it is NOT the line Officer (C/O) who is responsible for this. If ordered than they have to go just as the Deputies had to go 12 years ago.

This does not change a thing in my book. Tisch and company is bad for the Department period. This man has managed to effect innocent hard working people just like U/S Morris used to do in the prior administration. No concern for the workers.

DeMarco has still got my vote and I'm sure that is the case with most C/Os. District Court has not all of a sudden made us change our minds. You Mr Tisch had 3 years to do the right thing by the whole department. Had you done the right thing I would not have to waste my time typing this post to begin with. Enjoy retirement.

Yesterday Suffolk Sheriff Alfred Tisch ordered that the Deputy Sheriff's working at 1st District Court be transfered elsewhere and they be replaced by Corrections Officers.

This move has been viewed by Deputies and Correction Officers as retaliation for the rumors that have the Deputy Sheriff union president, (Vincent Demarco), running against Tisch for the Sheriff post in November. In recent weeks the Sheriff has all but dismantled the most historied group in Suffolk Law Enforcement history. He has done so at the expense of the very same Deputy Sheriff's he personally PROMISED not to hinder prior to his election to office three and half years ago. The same Deputies he is hurting now are the ones who supported him and helped insure his election three years ago. While a candidate for office he spoke of HONESTY - INTEGRITY - TRUTH IN POLITICS - and his extensive backround including service to the country as a Marine. He is none of what he professed to be, instead we find that he is an opinionated, self serving, nepotic, politician. That he LIED to many of his supporters just to get elected to his post.

I hope he understands that we, (both C/O's and DEPS), now know him for what he really is, and that we are prepared to remove him Sullivan and Denzler from their posts. The following should also be noted:

1. When Tisch came to office he hired longtime associate Kevin James? James Kevins? as his aid, then he hired Kevin James son to work in the Sheriff's Office Garage.

2. On at least two occasions Tisch, and or Sullivan were involved in motor vehicle accidents - one where it is clear that he left the scene of the accident - (covered up), and a second where it is understood that he was intoxicated - (again covered up).

3. Undersheriff Denzler has a roving eye that zeroed in on a married female C/O with whom it appears he had an extra - marital
affair. His advances in this area continue.

4. Sheriff Tisch did nothing but sit back and mismanage the Sheriff's Office for three years until he felt threatened by the rumor that Vincent Demarco would run against him and that many C/O's were supporting this change. The Sheriff then began a campaign of "cost cutting" measures aimed at the Deputies in direct retaliation for Demarco's intent to run. Many of the changes will actually cost the county more money, which shows this administrations inability to manage properly.

I am a member of this Department, have been for many years - and NO for the first time it doesn't matter if I am a C/O or a Dep - I just work here. I am saddened that Tisch gave us a Canine Dog position after all this time, (just to piss off the Deps).

I am offended and pissed off myself that he and his war dogs think that I am so simple minded as to jump in bed with him now!
I am beyond words in response to his now trying to buy us off by giving us the First District Court complex to run. (I do think C/O's should run 1DC, but not like this). This is a clear and simple PAYOFF - I'm not buying it at all! I wont turn it down, but I still wont support you Mr. Tisch.

For the very first time, WE, (C/O's and DEPS), have an opportunity to put our own people in office, I know Demarco is a Dep, and yes I know he will pick his Under Sheriff's after the election. But he should understand that if he were to indicate to C/O's that he would at least consider an undersheriff from the corrections side, Tisch would be finished RIGHT NOW!

I cant stand this crap any more, these politicians come and go - but this is my career, this is how I feed my family, this is how I pay for my mortgage. I was here in 1993 when Mahony through us out of 1 DC, and it hurt guys. So the Deps must understand - we know what you are facing, and we never want it again. So extend an olive branch to our side and lets get together and throw these F*CKS the H*LL out of here for good.

Then came the trials and indictments and the deals etc. so where are they now? Mahoney hasn't been heard from since, Morris took pleas and is retired in obscurity. Now we have Tisch, he reacts to an article in Newsday where the Demarco made comments about him by giving the C/O's 1 DC, he takes away the overnight trips from Deputies and gives it to THE STATE C/O's, (not Suffolk C/O's), then he continues with illegal contract busting and union busting ploys. Guess what, I'll be here when he's gone too! This is my career, this isn't just some stopover on a long line of political jobs. This is it for me, and frankly I'm not going to sit back and let him rip apart the Sheriff's Department any more. I can understand if C/O's are happy with getting 1 DC, I really do, but at what cost to your own dignity did you get those twenty some odd jobs? How long will both sides sit back and take this back and forth crap until we stand together and throw the POLITICIANS out of OUR JOBS. I am supporting Vin Demarco, he has always been a decent and trustworthy person. He tells me he wants a better job for both C/O's and Deps and I firmly believe that he is sincere. The smaller parties will go with the guy who attends to their political protocols. Thus far Demarco is rumored to have most of the minor party lines locked up after his interviews. Tisch didn't even interview with some of the minors. Apparently didn't think he would need the minors to win, didn't interview with them, now he has reconsidered and is too late according to some in the know types I spoke to. The feeling was that Tisch didn't interview last month like everyone else who wanted the support, then he shouldn't get their support now. I really wonder who is running the Tisch campaign because to date it is a scary sight. He attempts to get himself invited to certain fundraisers - only to have to PAY for his dinner at the door, while Demarco is already invited and is up their next to the party leaders. It amazes me that he even runs the Sheriff's Department. If he runs that department as shoddy as his campaign then we certainly do need a change.

I had a great laugh at work today. Once again Tisch has shown how he and his administration suffer from having no law enforcement experience. What gave me the great laugh was the recent memo Tisch sent out about how he had to cancel this year’s awards ceremony.
In the memo Tisch cries and whines how he tried to raise the moral in this department, how the first year the ceremony was well attended and how last year no one attended. He went on to try and blame on the low turn out and non-existent moral on all kinds of factors. This fool and his fellow morons just don’t get it.
MESSAGE TO TISCH: The only factor that has caused moral to reach an all time low and bottom out in this department is YOU! You have no clue what you are doing. Neither you, nor anyone in your administration was ever a LEO. Yeah Sullivan likes to go around telling people how everyone in his family was a city cop. MESSAGE TO SULLIVAN: If your family ever knew how you treated your men they would never talk to you again.

If you dont know Vin Demarco then you shouldn't assume anything, especially where he stands on different issues etc. I know the guy since he came on the job. The fact that he became Union President so early in his career indicates the amount of trust the people who work with him have for him. I understand that Corrections Officers will be hesitant to support him, and I don't blame you. BUT - do you really think the current guy is such a rosy path for you to follow? You must certainly know he is a vindictive punk by now. With what he has done recently I'm sure a lot of CO's are eager to support him. I think you are all missing the point. The Pod Man seems to have a more sublime point to make. He is making a mockery of the front office with his bad attempts at humor, but more importantly, most of what he has posted here is the truth and we all know it. Each time the guy posts I noticed that he is rebutted by someone with the same writing style, who always posts at the same time of day. I'm not sure but it does appear that the "Pod man" has indeed struck a few nerves in the front Office.

Basically because the administrations over the years always tried keeping things quiet. They never wanted bad press on their watch. The sad reality is that they couldve made great progress with morale if they ever showed they gave a shyt. They never did, they arent now. How about this, does anyone know a CO came down with a confirmed case of legionairres disease at Yaphank? It was only recently that samples of the mold from various parts of the duct work around the jail did it confirm alot of suspicion why people are continually ill at the workplace. They want to do their damndest(sp?) to keep the spectre of SICK BUILDING SYNDROME from peoples vocabulary. BUT, to improve morale not only are they going to ignore potential life threatening health risks associated with long term exposure to things like black mold (and whatever else has been growing inside the ducts since the jails were built, because we all know theyve NEVER BEEN PROPERLY CLEANED )
a huge bonus they want us to have is a crazy sick time policy which would more than likely have every last CO on the MEU "HIT LIST".
Its basically business as usual, the Sheriff and his hand picked check writer squad to dominate the workers and keep them beaten down without ever thinking , HEY, maybe it is the right thing to do, how about we try giving a fvck about the health and well being of the people who work for me?

I work for the County and the Sheriff, not the union. A good will gesture from Demarco would be to get Otto to free up money from another budget line to get those air purifiers you spoke of. After all, its our employer not our member organization who should be ensuring a safe work environment.

I would not have written anything regarding when is he(Demarco) going to do something about safegarding our health if he made it common knowledge to the rest of the people who arent in the Inner Sanctum that there was something in the works . Well, when it comes to personal health issues I would much rather deal with facts as opposed to your opinion on whether the union wants us all to hate the Sheriff or not. From what I heard, there wasnt much of a turnout at the last meeting which included food and drink and guest speakers. I was not able to attend because I was on duty but I know there were at least 500 COs who werent which I wouldve hoped couldve made sure that kind of information was disseminated. That way alot of our fears about that sort of thing mightve been calmed. Of course it wouldnt take all that much for the Sheriff himself to make sure the troops knew he was acting on these vital health issues. Heck, he more than likely wouldnt have even had to type the memo himself, I am sure he couldve told one of his secretarys to do just that.
By the way, I try to stay infomed as best I could and for the life of me I cant remember hearing any of the guys on the exec board spewing any sort of hate. Your post is a bit misinformed, either that, or the info contained is old. Let me clear it up for you.

Demarco gave us:

HANDCUFFS: Yes, now we don't have to use our own.
New Chairs: Only in the lobbys' in Rvhd. The rest are the equivalent to sitting on a milk crate
TRAINING: Yes, we finally got O/C training but this was introduced during the Tisch years
NEW UNIFORMS: Tisch administration gave us this, now they want to change it again!
NEW ID's: We get this under every new Administration. The Sheriff wants HIS name on it.
K9: Tisch gave us him, now he's not even allowed to bring the dog inside anymore.
BIKE AT THE FARM: Well, thats news to me. Where is this "bike at the farm" that you speak of?
DIRECT SUPERVISION: What a complete joke. Done ONLY to cut posts and save $$$. The current jail set up was never designed for this type of supervision. They want to go to "Direct supervision", then they need to construct a whole new facility based on that.
WARDEN: Well, that goes with every new Administration. He moves Tischs' boys out, then makes room for his. Again, nothing new.
DISTRICT: Yes, it was expected we'd be moved out of there AGAIN. I don't like how we got it in the 1st place but we did have stake in it a long time ago.
JOB SVCKS: No, the "actual" job doesn't svck at all. What svcks is how we get treated by the administration and the conditions in which we work under. That could be fixed by the administration.
OUTSIDE POSTS: (Range, Route driver) Well well, look at that. 5 lucky guys get to have a post "outside" of the jail. In nearly every other jurisdiction, the C/O gets to do "Inmate" related work. ie: transport, outside booth posts, blah blah)


Also, a few more things under Demarco:

VACATION/PERSONAL/TO LEAVE: Seems we have a 6-1 policy of off days now for all segments of corrections. The regular C/O's working on the crews basically had that. The "special" units (rehab, laundry, yard, visiting, etc) now lost whatever "perk" they had so to speak. The Sgt's and Lt's lost that little perk also. So much for looking forward to seniority.
POSTS: We lost a few posts thus placing our overall safety in jeopardy.

Now, for my opinion.
Overall, "we" C/O's just want a healthy place to work in. I don't want to catch some sort of disease because of the building in which i work in. I'm sure if some skid puked in the patrol car, the car would be taken out of service to be cleaned, as it should. As far as I know, Jones was not permitted to object to the vacation policy, if he was even at the meeting, but please ask him about that - I will.

Vito signed the MOA with the Sheriff's Office alone and without the rest of the board's input. I was told by several board members that he put it on the conference table in the office and told them it was signed. If the rest of the board didn't make it known, they were probably jsut being team players. But Vito did that one all by himself!

Cant quite figure that out either since the guys who knocked them off the board seem to be non existant. Where the hell have those guys been? Non released board members receive $600 a year. Thats $11.54 a week. For countless hours of work on their own time. Most people bitch if they dont get paid if the count clears 4 minutes late. Get the facts straight....the President gets 10K NOT 20K....like youre saying, all the rest of the guys on the board who are non released get the same as Gary.....why is it that you are trying to make it a big deal now??? Because your his close friend??? Did breaking the non released guys balls just start? I remember for many years at the farm how Mike P ,who as far as I remember was the only guy on the board from the farm for 10 years or so, was crucified regularly . I guess its another case of who's popular and who isnt.
