Why Nott

John (Sewer) Iliou is the appointed law clerk to a
sitting republican Conty Court Judge. The Judge and
his law clerk are not permitted to engage in partisan
politcal activity, such as running for office and raising
money for a political campaign. How is it then that
Iliou was alllowed to run for the political office of
County Legislator in 2001 and he will rn again this year?

There is an appearnce of impropriety here. Iliou should
be forced to resign his law clerk job (provided by Frank
Aprea who has business dealings with Iliou's father), or
he should be forced to take an unpaid leave of absence.

With all the bad press the courts are getting- they
don't need a judge's law clerk running for office while
he is working in the judge's office.

There is not anything that forbids a law clerk from participating in partisan politics. I also believe the judge Iliou works for is a conservative not a republican.

A judge's appointed law clerk can run as the nominee
of a political party for a political office? A judge can't
do that and the judge probably can't let his staff do
that. Someone better check the Code of Judicial
Conduct before the Office of Court Administration
does so.
Franeti ran on the Republican line- he did not win on
the Conservative line. That makes Farneti a Republican.

Judge Joe Farneti is a registered Conservative who was cross endorsed by the Republicans. That makes him a Conservative, not a Republican. John Iliou got his job through pat Curcio, not Frank Aprea, who was feuding with the Conservatives when Farneti was elected. Finally, there is no prohibition against a law clerk for a judge running for office, or even being a committeeman. I agree that this seems a bit strange, as he his an extension of a branch of government that should be apolitical, but there is no violation here and he can't be faulted if he stays within the rules.

your political leader will tell you and the bar association will tell you, law clerks are indeed able to run for office and be committeemen'

as did Paul Hensley, run for judge and win, james flanagan is looking to run for judge, gary brunjes was a judge and lost, robert meguin ran and lost, Joseph Pastoressa active member of the conservative party.

call the suffolk county bar, they will tell you. its all ok
