Does any enforcement agency like the SCPD of the Sheriff's Office employ part time police officers/deputies? I know that Southampton Town does but is there anybody else? Thanks in advance.

I believe the SCPD has many officers that work part time...and goof off the rest of the time.

Most of the East End Towns/villages hire part time or seasonal employees. You will need to be certified. If you aren't they may hire you and sponsor you for the part time academy. Open the blue pages of the phone book and call every town/village dept. other than SCPD or SCSO and ask the same question.

SCPD - no, they do have axuilary police.
SCSD - no, they used to have "special deputies" until 2002, but they had no training and were a joke.

Pretty much all the Town/Village PD, Public Safety, Constables, etc have part timers. I belive one force (either HoH or Nissequogue) is entirely part timers.

Yes SCPD does have part time. Most villages do, because they need more people during the summer months. Part time runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. You will usually get the worst hours, and you only make $12.50 an hour. You will have to go through a part time academy from October to May on your own time. The academy is 4 week days from 6-10 and Saturdat from 8-4. YOU DO NOT GET PAID FOR THE ACADEMY!!! it is on your won time!!! You also still have to go through the hiring process like everyone else at all. Unlss you are a teacher with the whole summer off with nothing better to do, the pay and time is not worth it.

You sir are an idiot. SCPD hasn't hired a part timer in around 10 years. As for the advice about the town and village departments that is correct. Open up the blue pages of the phone book and call Southampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Nissequogue, SC Parks, Head of the Harbor, Ocean Beach, Southold, East Hampton, Montauk and see if you can get one of them to sponsor you to the part time academy.

Anyone who is a part time P.O. is nothing but a buff. Why would any normal person go to the academy for free??? Every part timer takes o/t away from a full timer or allows the municipality to delay or not hire a full timer.

I never looked at it that way before. And yes they are buffs. Why would a normal person go though the whole hiring process and the academy on their own time. You have to go through it all again if you get hired full time.

Because there are Town and Village Dept.s that once you have a BMP cert. don't care if it came via a full or part time academy. Some will roll you over if they get to your name for the full timer list. Besides take your BMP cert. out of state and you can get reciprocity and leave the sinking ship of Long Island.

Now, now, as a guest there is no need for you to be so rude. A more polite response from you would have been to post the following, "You sir are mistaken."

Hes an SCPD officer, what do you expect? A typical overpaid, pompus, lazy SCPD officer who spend the whole shift in the firehouse parking lot.

What the F over. I realize the job requirements are 21 years of age a G.E.D. or H.S. diploma and a drivers license, but the above poster is a disgrace. Let me guess, by the rambling incoherence and lack of gramar I'd guess you were a PO in Crime Control who did spackling work for the bosses and now you are a detective. Please get another screen name so that you don't embarass youself or the job by your incompetence.

SCPD does not hire part timers, at least not anymore. 8 or 10 years ago (maybe more ? ) they hired 'seasonals' (tin numbers began with the letter 'S' ) for a summer or 2, but not anymore.

As a cop on long island I've always been fascinated by the part time thing. If you want to be a cop be a city cop and then take the suffolk and nassau tests like the rest of us who got hired out here. The part time thing is for people who dont really want to deal with the regular issues that a real cop has to deal with and you get to keep your teaching job and ...oh yess.....show your police id card when your driving home drunk from the annual teachers picnic.
To me if you dont want to be a city cop and only want to be on long island, then this whole thing has nothing to do with being a cop, its with making money. Oh and the old story about part timers is true regardless of what you think.....if they couldn't hire part timers they would have to hire more full timers.

09-14-2005, 03:01 PM
thats great because i was a part-timer after being a NYC police officer for 4 years, and was hired full-time 90 days after being a seasonal so thanks

09-14-2005, 10:34 PM
i also was a seasonal and because full time out of it after 3 months not a bad way probably jealous we are makin 3 times what they are! oh yeah same academy same certificate same everything...remember were all on the same side and can be your back up one day
