View Full Version : Cops at the firehouse

Everyday M-F I drive past the West Babylon Firehouse next to the Stop and Shop and see at least two SCPD cars siitting in the parking lot empty.
WhereTF are the cops? I can see using the bathroom, or having lunch but everyday at the same place, during the same time frame. Its time to start writing down car numbers and calling it in, or better yet pictures or videos.
These cops better get their act together, it was nice when Suffolk was a small, mostly white, working class county but its not anymore. Its time to start earning that 140K plus salaries.

OK then why not send a two man unit to pickup one of the cars and now you'll have more patrol cars in the sectors. Oh I know cause the two man units are for the minority areas where the chances of actually doing the job you were hired for increase ten fold. your answer is bullshit, but if it is true, then its piss poor management of resources.

Why is his answer bullshit? What two man unit? Thats the point there is a lack of manpower in the patrol function county wide. What point dont you understand. And your right about poor management, most bosses have no idea how to allocated the small amount of resources we do have in patrol.

That is BULL. Those sector guys in that area are VERY well known for their 2-3 hour lunches that they take. They get a bullshit call, hit the fire house and then after about 45 minutes they go 38 on the call and then wait a little while and clear their meal. Everyone else has to pick up the slack and it will not help to complain because the SGT is usualy eating with them.

If true wouldnt you think they would be checking the GPS TRACKERS on every car? You know, they know where the cars are, how long they have been there and even HOW fast they are going. Try again. If the cops were parked for that long they would be up the river so to speak. Try again.

We use the opportunity to catch up on paperwork, stretch our legs, hit the head, grab a bite to eat, or simply BS with some of the guys at the firehouse. We may even take our entire meal there with another officer. More likely though, the cars you are seeing, are the unmanned units unable to be filled. Happy?

you are wrong. with the new computers, any cop can check the location of any other cop, even if the computer is off. the computer has its own battery, and until that dies(think days) the car would be located.
The old computers tracked you up to 4 hours after the computer shut down due to power failure( no power supply, not being turned off)

Some sectors are a 30 minute drive to the precinct. We don't even have roll call. We switch tours at relief points due to the distances in Suffolk County. Police work means doing assignments in the field. This keeps us close to calls for service.

I offered you a lucid, valid excuse for your concerns, and you're still questioning it? Seriously, just leave us alone and go about your life. Let us do our jobs. Most of us actually got into this job to help people and to make a difference, and consider ourselves very lucky to have gotten hired by the county - even if we weren't, we'd likely be working for NYPD, Nassau, or even out of state. Why? Because we wanted to be cops. We were just lucky enough to get on out here.
If you have any other questions about the police cars at the firehouse, stop in and ask one of the firemen. If you see an officer there - ask him or her. The trolls who post here acting as cops would have you believe that the officer would crucify you right then and there for daring to ask a question, but we're more than willing to help and answer questions. So stop on down and have a chat, you'll likely be pleasantly surprised at the experience.
Have a good day. Spring is finally here!

I'm not a FF, but my husband is. Many times when I visit him and the other FF there are police officers in the rec room. they are filling out paperwork (which by the way is a lot) using the rest room and having a bite to eat. They are the officers that patrol my neighborhood and there is no problem with having them at the fire house. Many times the police and fire department work together. It is a warm place for them to come in out of the cold, with people that understand what they see and do every day. Until you raise your hand and take an oath to protect your neighbors, you have no idea what these men and women go through. Join the fire or police department and you will understand. Otherwise your complaining is moot.

You obviously dont know what proactive patrol means. Es does a lot of stuff, they are the polices police. They come for trees down, barricaded subjects, mvas, fuel spills, search warrants, you name it. We call them when we are in over our heads
They do not actively patrol looking for crime. sure if they run into something they'll take action, but thats not their primary job, in fact i'd doubt they even have traffic tickets anymore.

Well until you give a FF going to an alarm a ticket like a rook in the 3rd and they decide to shut your access keys and key less entry fabs you don't need to leave. I love hanging with the sectors who come into the FD all great guys never a problem and most of them enjoy the time away from all the hectic crap going on. Being in the 3rd with all the spanish and dirty shadows its gotta be nice for them to feel safe in an establishment where they won't be shot or assaulted on and relax.. Plus we have played a few good jokes on the ones who fall asleep and they all enjoy it so please guys enjoy the FD and look out for us who volly in the fd

The COPS pay FD taxes and have more of a right to use the firehouse than a vollie who is usually unemployed and not paying fire taxes.
Uninformed and uneducated as usual. Are you sure that your name is not Truth 101: My name is Stupid?. Everyone who owns (not rents) a home pays FD taxes. Do you own yours? Most volunteers have jobs (hence the reason for towns going with paid day crews). Volunteers go thru the same training as paid crews. The only difference: that vollie homeowner is paying taxes so that the paid crew can receive a paycheck. Vollies work just as hard as others to make a living and still find time to volunteer to assist in saving someones life or property.
It doesn't matter that cops are in the firehouse. Cops can sit on their asses at any location that they choose.
It is time for you to get a life because I guarantee that if your house was burning, or your mother injured herself, or if you were being assaulted, you would call on that cop, that firefighter, and that emt to come to your rescue and be grateful that they assisted you.
Stop being a hater.

So most of PO replies indicate that its their break period and admit to sleeping.
Well I don't get it. Don't you get paid for your meal period by SCPBA contract, where does it say you get paid to nod or sleep?
Aren't you paid for your meal period so that you are on call/on duty to respond to calls. Aren't you paid additional 1-1/2 if you are denied you meal period or it is interrupted.
Is your paid meal period 1hour or 45 minutes which is it by contract?
I don't care if you utilize fire house as substitute police station you deserve a nice place for shift change personal breaks meal periods.
But if sleeping is realy OK by SCPD Brass go back to precinct station house fo nap time. Oh and walk in with that pillow.

I use the firehouse for my breaks. Im allowed that. It has nothing to do with you, or with the fd. The buildings belong to the taxpayers, not to you get that through your skull. I am polite and civil to the vollies. They know I dont do favors, and the new vollies find out quickly. I dont eat the taxpayers food, I dont drink the taxpayers coffee(its not yours, remember).
Whether you show up at a mva or not, I go. Not my problem. If I dont have enough pds, I'll just close the road.
Our police commissioner doesnt care about the firehouses.
Our pba has no say in the picking of relief points. When we've had problems with vollies, we have written a formal complaint to our Inspector and he has move our relief point.

Its a shame but its true. Its not your exclusive playpen. The county wants us to relieve out of them, as opposed to turning out from the pct, which would lead to all kinds of issues with the police cars, lack of manpower etc.
