Will the deps still be able help out us (K9, SRT, Marine Bureau, etc) East Enders when the new jail is completed as all operations will we transfered to Yaphank?
Deputy Sheriff's do not work in the jail. So I would guess that they will be able to assist eastend towns still if needed.

there will be no jail built the county feels it is cheeper to send inmates to other counties. however they don't relize by building a new jail with excess cells it will pay for itself when other agencies (like oh i don't know rikers or nassau) would pay suffolk to house THEIR inmates.

It's a jail, not a motel.
no sh** stupid, did you read what i wrote??? or do i have to explain it like your 2 years old. by having a new jail built other agancies would PAY SUFFOLK to house their inmates when their jails get overcrowded........................
It's plain and simple, Suffolk cant afford not to build the new jail. It cost's 22 million dollars a year to send County time inmates to other jails due to overcrowding. It would cost only 20 million dollars a year for the new jail, at a fixed rate until paid. The cost to transport inmates to other jails will only go up in the future. Also, as stated in a previous post, the county can lease extra space to other municipalities. Plus, their would be a huge building with a large parcel of land in Riverhead that would no longer be needed. That in itself would be worth a couple million dollars. BUILD NOW, SAVE LATER!!!!!

Put the crack pipe down.
Debt service for the new jail would be 20 million a year. Now add 50 - 70 million a year to operate it. That is 90 million a year compared to 22million a year to ship the prisioners out.

You cannot keep operating a correctional facility(s) at 2005's realities when the buildings were designed at 1960's practices. They are obsolete and hazardous to those who work and are incarcerated there.
Contrary to public perception the criminal just doesn't go away after his arrest. Read Newsday? Murderers, rapists, gangstaz, pedophiles, they're here to stay and their numbers will grow. Thank those that spend their day with them so you don't have to.
Build it and they will come.
Suozzi will pay half

Levy doesn't have to worry about building it. Tom Suozzi will be glad to give him the Nassau County people's money - in fact - he'll even float some bond to help Levy out as long as Levy is willing to help Suozzi mend fences with all the people in Albany and Washington that Suozzi pissed off. Since Suozzi believes all Nassau County taxpayers are stupid, and Newsday agrees, after Suozzi plegdes to pay for half of Levy's jail - Newsday will do an article with Suozzi's smiling face hugging Levy. They will give them accolades for "working together" and they will call the new facility the Nassau-Suffolk Jail Facility. Of course, it will be in Suffolk County and will be staffed by Suffolk County employees and Nassau County will have to pay rent to house Nassau County inmates their - but the people of Nassau County are too stupid too care about "the details". As long as it fits with Suozzi's agenda for state-wide office - it fits into Nassau county's budget.

Whats the difference between 1960's practices and 2005's realities? Additional facilities can be added to the core jails we already have.
Jails are pretty simple buildings. Cages, corridors, and common areas.

All you need to do is walk around the jails to see how they're outdated. You have outdated plumbing, poor lighting, exposed electrical wiring, blindspots, hand-operated gates, insufficient heating and cooling, leaks all over the place, and on and on. A previous poster mentioned a lack of detention space, totally inadequate holding cell space at Yaphank, and the places are literally falling apart.
My answer? Scale back the current proposal, keep the Riverhead building for specialized housing, and take advantage of the new annex by constructing newer housing at Yaphank.

heres my other answer, how about a fair contract for correction officers and deputies whom both of which have now gone past a year with out one. It is going to get interesting if this contract thing drags on for another year.............................................. ..then when we get our FAIR contract, build a new jail............

Plumbing does not get "outdated." Plumbing, piping and gravity remain as they have for decades. Plumbing systems might "wear out" in that valves and other wear-and-tear components require maintainence or replacement. Drains may clog but that's been going on for years and will continue even in a brand new facility.
Poor lighting can be easily addressed by adding additional lighting. Or perhaps, lighting the original facility poorly was part of the original plan. "Exposed wiring" is the result of additions made after the facility was built, usually at the request of the corrections department.
The complexity of mass heating & cooling systems shouldn't be taken lightly. Insufficient heating and cooling is what you end up with when the county hires jackleg "handyman" as a public facilities building plant engineers. They're working for the county at well below private sector rates because they suck at what they do and cannot retain employment in the private sector. They'll f&%k up a brand new building right after their first attempt at "tweaking" the system because the boss-man wants his office 2 degrees cooler or warmer.
Hand operated gates! Oh boo-hoo! Sorry everything isn't operable at the touch of a button commando. Put down the donut and the coffee and get your feet off the console and crank that puppy when the need arises. Unless, of course, you're willing to give up a few bucks in your next contract in exchange for all the added luxuries of reduced manual labor. Next you'll be demanding remote-control key fobs instead of brass passkeys.

Question. Has anyone ever escaped from Riverhead?
Answer. Yes, but not recently but Tisch frequently releases the wrong inmates.

I guess even Pat Mahoney was a better sheriff them him, hell hes better the Felicia Collins who probably would have released every minority inmate under the guise that "evil white men" supposedly locked them up on false charges just as "evil white men" supposedly oppressed her in the SCPD.
I bet for a couple of million a year or less Mexico would be glad to take some of the hardcour inmates. They wouldn't have any problems with violating their rights and would make them work for their keep.
Maybe its time to put things into perspective--these are criminals who could care less about the rights of their victims but god forbid someone should treat them badly. Just my .02 worth
