The 50th Anniversary is a celebration of the retirees who proudly served the Department. It has nothing to do with the sitting Commissioner or County Executive. Don't allow other issues to get in the way of thanking those who served before we did.

You think the retirees give a hoot about police week? Get a grip pal! The retirees are amazed at what this once proud departmet is coming to and how long it's going to get take to get it back to what it was after the circus act leaves town. They're just glad they got off the Titanic while the band was still playing! Ask ANY retiree if he/she feels any differently. Go spin the good things about the 50th anniversary to somebody who actually believes it!

This is the reason while you will always just be a dumb ass cop and never a boss or serve in a good assignment. You are honoring the DEPARTMENT a--hole and as the previous poster stated, the proud members who are still serving and who have served in the past. This isn't about Dormer or Levy jerkoff! I for one am still proud of this Department so keep crying.
Your future raises are tied to the reputation of the department and the pride of the members.

I am proud of our department and its heritage. I would say 99% of my fellow officers are professional, dedicated, stand-up guys and gals. The SCPD has come a long way over the past fifty years, and to downplay the 50 Year Anniversary because of some recent politically based problems would be a disservice to both the community and our profession.

My dad happens to be one of them. He is extremely proud to be a retired member of scpd.
But if the pba called him and told him to boycott this year because of the horrible relationship, he would understand.
And so would most former members of our pba. They might not agree, they might still come, but they would understand.
Many of them see where the dept is going and what is happening after all the years of their efforts to build it into the dept it was 6 years ago.

If one was to ONLY use this board, snoozeday, and the TOTAL silence of the scpd pba (radio, tv, even internet site is useless), one would have to think that the pba is quickly losing ground to the CE. Not sure what to make of it, but it seems like the CE will win decisively soon. Didn't the contract expire over 3 years ago? Seems like a doom and gloom sign for the pba if they can't get anything to go their way as of yet: highways, spec units, new contract, recruiting.

Levy will win what decisively soon? The contract? Levy asked for about 20k in givebacks per cop. We asked for a few % a year for a long term similiar to what ncpd got (9 year contract with 3 years of freezes, and 1-3% pay raises) Whatever we win is going to be more.
The contract expired 2 years and 3 months ago, and is being finalized by a independant arbitrator.
Highway is being decided by a perb board, and is not a lock either for us or against us.
Recruiting? That affects the public is is slowly being squeezed for less and less cops. We look at it as more opportunities to make overtime.
The pba is probably quiet for a reason, do you really want to be all over the air as you close in on a new contract and get bashed by levy and the puppet media?

The only people suffering form doom and gloom are the taxpayers of Suffolk County. They're paying for cops they're not getting and watching their home values plummet as violent crime skyrockets. But don't worry, if your neighborhood has a rash of shooting and homicides, they'll just declare it a "HOT SPOT"(see todays snewsday). Question is, what happens when you send what's left of your decimated special units to a "hot spot"? Does the heroin task force put up a "be back later" sign up in the prior "hot spot"? You can only play the shell game and get away with it for so long!

You know-it-alls think everything would be better with many different and smaller PDs, take a look at comparable areas in the US. Places with similar large population, congestion, etc. Crime spikes quickly and easily with so many different chefs spoiling the broth. Why do you think NYPD is the way it is? If you want a quick history lesson, you'll learn that the NYPD used to be many smaller agencies. Jeez. So sick of the whining about the SCPD.

Wrong, taxes would go up. The county exec could not hide behind the police tax to fund other areas.
Police taxes would either go down or there would be an increase in officers.

Unless the towns were able to pool resources .... in that case if they included the east end the savings would be significant.

It will never happen obviously but town Police would have (smaller versions) much of the same bureau's that the larger county wide does now. ES could be done with out probably giving the regular patrol much of their duties. Don't need ES to handle car accidents - Volly FD can and usually do handle before ES on scene anyway. Smaller Dept may be better because things can be (hate to use this word but..) micromanaged better. The needs of the smaller area can be focused on better. As long as you don't have a bunch of Chiefs and few Indians. Many towns (on Long Island) who do have their own PD's have lower crime rates. Not all - MANY! What each town could do is buy 1-2 dogs per squad, and have 1-2 k-9s as part of their force. When they are needed they leave the call they are on, if assigned and respond.
Or the towns could buy/train the dogs together and save money that way if thats applicable

Obviously you have no clue what it takes to buy and train these dogs. They are purchased overseas and have no training whatsoever when they come here. Sorry, NYPD, NCPD, and SCPD don't get their dogs from Bide-A-Wee. So each town would have to go through this process and get a trainer to train the dogs. Then what happens when you're in the middle of handling a call when there's an immediate request for canine? I guess you tell everyone you gotta' go, that you're needed elsewhere. Things like the process of puchasing and training dogs, and the necessity to have canine respond to scenes ASAP are the REASON we have a canine unit. Having a dog in a sector car may work in Mayberry, but not in Suffolk.

Most smaller towns who have their own PD's are in very upscale areas. Thats the largest reason for smaller crimes as well as more officers per area, though the upscale neighberhoods is the #1 reason. No shit. The county currently purchases 10 dogs to get 3 k-9 usually between 10 months and two years. and you are wrong about the training. The dogs get a rudimentary schutzhund training. They are temperment tested to make sure they are not noise shy, or overly aggressive. so right there you have a minimum BH, SCHa and probably SCH1 training.
If it was broken down to town pd, they could either all use 1 trainer, or piggyback the training in a NYS, MTA, PAPD, NYPD, NCPD, etc class.
Having 1-2 k-9s per town would be far better then the system we have now, where there are times there are NO k-9s or they are responding from the 7th to Copaigue.

Imported or not, there are FIVE patrol squads that work in each precinct. That means you would have to have FIVE dogs and handlers in each precinct, not one or two. THATS why ther is a K-9 unit, because it works. Enough said! You want to re-invent the wheel?

The retirees who usually have their annual dinner in Florida, were invited to have the occasion at the 50th anniversary "celebration"(if you can say that with a straight face). Surely they were invited so SOMEBODY would show. The only rank and file you will see there will be the few arse kissers and those units who are ordered to go. And you can bet your bottom dollar units will be ordered to attend, so as not to make it look like a total sham. It's just a shame it has come to this!

Why not push the current bill to give the PC, FRES COMM and Director of Probation a 5 year Term. The Leg can vote out the current PC and keep the FRES and Probation guys, who I have been told are good guiys. We have power here , why not do it ? Levy does not want this, so we should

You want him gone, talk to the Leg. about the new bill which will give fixed terms to the PC , FRES and Probation. I have no problem with FRES and/or Probation, but all 3 would have to be voted on by the full Leg. It calls for a 5 year term for each. This was a great idea and it would keep a PC who is bent on destroying the department at someone else's wishes just so he can hold onto his job and it would hold the PC accountable to the public who see the crime rate skyrocketting out of control! HOWEVER, you would need votes from a guy like Tom Muratore. I believe he may have actually sponsored the bill, although he accused another legislator of stealing his idea. However, when the conservative party told Tommy that it wasn't a good idea, he backed down.

I have rec'd 4 calls today from Leg. members (Repu.) who told me that Ed (Mr SCCO) told them if they vote for this bill, they will not get his party vote next time. This is a chance to get rid of the PC, he would have to be voted on by the full Leg.I think the other guys would stay, but he would be gone. So Ed is holding things over their heads, they need his party to win. Maybe we should tell all of them they need the PBA to win. I guess Ed is speaking for the CE now. He knows what this guy has done to us, but even the Leg. member forgetting what we did for them.

Steve Levy refused to fund it the past two years. If you can pay for it out of your pocket, the Department will gladly have it again.
Back to the 50th Anniversary, bring Family Day back for it. Show your pride. And how much did it really cost? All that stuff is set up for the schools all week long, it was just another blow to the cops who had some pride and wanted to share it with their family. I'm sure the Department could set it up so all those guys doing the demos are on straight time, they send more guys to parades on straight time.

You're absolutely right. Our families have made many concessions over the years because a parent is a cop. Shiftwork, holidays, a parent who's come home bloody, brought home lice, and shell shocked after dealing with the worst society has to offer. Plus the anti-cop bulls&%t that they suffer through as well. The commissioner knows what our families have to deal with.
He can smack down his employees all he wants; he's the boss. But when he canceled family day he smacked down our families and told us all what he really thinks about his employees. I take no pride in an organization that threats its people like that.

I'd rather show my kids what it means to stand up for what you believe in, that being a member of a union(PBA or any other union) means something more than cheap talk, and that while they may want to follow in their family tradition of civil service, the politics of the day make that choice more and more difficult to justify. Spoken like a true Levy believer! How many NCPD or NYPD cops come home bloody every night? I worked in the worst pct in Brooklyn for years and never got hurt. Now in SCPD, I have had two major injuries requiring surgery so I could go back out on patrol.
And working in the worst pct in the city, I will tell you most of the people there where hard working law abiding citizens. Maybe not middle class, but still not criminals. You obviously look at people in the lower class as criminals and people that are of less value than you. Your racist views and intolerance is a reason why you havent been hired as a cop in long island. But dont worry Steve Levy is screwing up Applicant Investigation, so you might have a shot in the future.

Steve Levy is starting a new gun program.
Bring you own gun to the Police and get a job, no backround needed.
then we hit rock bottom and to save money we take a joint entrance exam with NYPD. Obviously the NYPD worked out so great for NYC that place is so wonderful all those cops want to live in Nassau and Suffolk, wonder why.

So much thought into that plate, must have taken someone hours to design.

You sir, are completely out of touch with what a police officer does for a living and this explains why your posts are so misinformed. The typical cop here (or just about any jurisdiction) with more than a few years on has experienced these and more. If you weren't some pasty-faced communications major interning for an ambitious politician, you might know that. You see son, there really are bad people out there amongst the good, and police work is dangerous and challenging. I've been hospitalized 7 times in my career, tried to revive several dead children, and have missed far more holidays with my family than I have been to. These aren't complaints, I took the job for what it is and it has been very good to me. I certainly wouldn't trade places with you.

I didnt see any bragging in his/her post. Sorry but it was well written and portrayed police work pretty well with maybe to many hospitalizations, though many do get hurt often. Yes the NYPD has it tougher but never ever forget that almost every call in Suffolk you are by yourself when the crap starts. That takes a toll.
