WTF, MANGANO??
02-24-2010, 11:37 PM
I have a question for the Mangano administration. This is not intended to be adversarial, in fact I am a republican who supported the campaign.
What progress has been made thus far in saving money in the county?
Can you explain certain seemingly contradictory actions, for example, putting Foskey in as commissioner, while moving Lopez down and they both have the same salary. This doesn't appear to be fiscally conservative. Perhaps Mr. Martino would care to articulate some explanation(s)?
Thanks.

Well, it does the save the County money in the long run because if they were to demote him and reduce his salary without cause (just to put someone in as a thank you) that would leave the County WIDE open for a lawsuit. So, the County would have to expend far more money to defend the lawsuit that would most definitely be filed. I mean - it looks bad - Lopez is somewhat qualified - in the fact that he has been running the Parks for a few years - he is Hispanic and he is a Democrat. So - there are red flags all over the place. It's easier for the administration to keep him, pay him, make him miserable and then hope he quits. I'm sure Martino would draft something for more eloquent...

If they knew that up front they should have found a btter resting place for the new judge. One more reason to love patronage, replacing a qualified person with a hack. They should search for a place for Lopez to earn his keep.

Lopez can be fired-just like anyone else. As far as being qualified cause he ran the dept-again, that could be said of any commissioner. That he is Hispanic-well, Mangano just put an Hispanic felon in a 90G spot. How do you think your average hard working Hispanic feels about that? It makes the whole Hispanic community look bad-not all are felons, so why choose this guy? If Mangano wanted an Hispanic appointment without a criminal background, he did not need to look far.
Also, Managno needs to look at how Civil Service employs very few Hispanics and keeps the down. That is a bigger problem. I know one Sewage Treatment Chemist with a masters who fought for a promo, and was denied by the GED grads he works for. They earn six figures; he does not. And yes, he is good and signs federal government documents for these characters. That is a bigger problem for Mangano.

As a newly elected executive Mangano can change the direction and policies of the government by formulating and clarifying them for the team of mangers.
He needs to put his own loyalists and people he trusts, and some folks who represent important active constituencies. That's pretty boring and most of us know it.
But does he have a tin ear and blinders on? Doesn't he see that appointing someone found guilty of government related crime is beyond foolish.
He has to expect folks to make fun of the ridiculous.
He's a lawyer. He should know he has crossed the line.

where's the law suit coming from? Lopez serves at the will of the CE -- don't need "cause" to fire

I agree. Can you imagine that being done in corporate America? Most jobs out in the REAL world are "at will". Also, Lopez is a Suozzi democrat and there is no need for Mangano to pander. He should have been fired outright.

In today's Newsday Editorial hey mention that the new Public Works Commisioner is having difficulty with the demands of the job and has been MIA during Snow Storms and Sewage Plant Emergencies. What were they they thinking when every qualified PE turned down the job. She is a kid with 4 kids and a baby I don't think she is ready to for 12 hour days and being chewed out by the Leg and the public every day. Maybe that is why Ribeiro is here, he was used to abuse and qualified for the job. His only problem was Suozzi who handcuffed him. Let her go back to her family and bring in Ribeiro. Save the Buck 35 they are paying her.

I would actually like to know why Ribeiro, 100% Suozzi puppet, is still doing at the DPW (at a buck 35 salary)? We now have a commissioner with no political affiliations, a Professional Engineer, who is very well respected in her field – and you want to put back a Suozzi hack. Come on now…
Ed, it is starting, please get rid of the leftover Dems before it is too late (if not already)...

Yes, let's release the leftovers and replace them with ex-cons....

The guy came up through the DPW ranks and knows his job and can help her or let her drown. He could also go back to his 6 figure Civil Service title, be protected and work 9 to 4:45 and not help one bit and just laugh the whole way through.
Mangano would be nuts to not keep him until she gets up to speed.
If she ever can.

You bring up some good points, however should have asked these questions 4 months or so ago. It should have been asked when Mangano was campaigning on saving the county $$$ while never said how he would do so. In fact the only thing Mangano really campaigned on in regards to the budget and the county finances was something to increase the deficit (which he did stick to). Other than that he offered nothing on how he would deal with the finances, so the fact that no progress has been made should not be surprising.

Well the time has come, I believe that NIFA will be looking for a plan at the end of this month. The assessment cure will do little to balance the budget even if there is a cure.
It will be interesting to see where the predicted savings will be coming because there sure does not appear to be many places.

Mangano's the guy who ran on the TAX REVOLT Party line!
Barely 2 full months into his administration and it's crystal clear that there is no prospect of him fighting high taxes anywhere on the horizon.
On schools...he says it's none of his business - after all, he never voted no on a school budget in his entire life, he's never fought a school tax hike in his entire life, nor has he ever even pledged moral support to those in Bethpage or anywhere else, fighting high school taxes!
On County Salaries - well, the short record already speaks to lengths about his committment to this goal, doesn't it! Schmitt - 45% salary hike request, Fosky/Lopez - 2 men to do one job, 90k for a convicted felon, Mondello cronies peppered all over the place at humongous salaries!
On Property Taxes - well again, the guy failed to inform the county assessors office of discrpencies in his property description that would have resulted in his home being fairly assessed - isn't that some sort of crime?
Ed Mangano....our leader of the Tax Revolt Party....or just plain revolting on taxes?
If you had to vote again, knowing what you do now, would you vote for this guy?
