Over the three years leading up to 2009, Suffolk lost 519 uniformed officers and rehired only 286, according to the county Legislature's Budget Review Office, leaving 2,432, the smallest force since the agency began tracking cop levels in 1993.

Let's see... 519-286 = 233. So the SCPD is DOWN 233 cops since 1993. That number, 2,432, includes all supervisors, from sgt. up to chief. I wonder how many unfilled positions there are at H.Q.? How much has the population in Suffolk County (legal and illegal) increased in that period of time? How many new neighborhood developments have been built and added to the tax rolls in that time?

While there may be fewer officers in Suffolk's force, there are 100 more cops patrolling the streets since 2004 due to civilianization of desk jobs, Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said Tuesday.

Let's see... That means there were 333 cops doing desk jobs???

Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said Tuesday. Further, overall crime has fallen 20 percent countywide in that period, and "that's a measure of the effectiveness of the police department," he said.

Isn't the DOJ investigating the manipulation of stats?

Welcome to Suffolk County, where the new math lives!

It's going to get worse before it gets better, and mostly it's the public who will suffer by more delayed services.

worse for you, better for everyone else

Worse for us? Less cops = more overtime due to manpower.
Less cops = more calls holding at end of tour for overtime.
Less cop for you equals longer wait. Less patrol, and even more crime.

You are paying for 1/4 of a police force that doesnt exist. your taxes have gone up by 45.00 the last 2 years for more cops who havent been hired,
according to the fbi since 2004 the police force has dropped by 5%, and index (serious ) crime has risen by 7%.
I go to work everyday. I have a good job, and its enjoyable. There is plenty of overtime, and i'm well ahead of my best year with 70 hours as of Febuary. There a re cops with well over 100 already
After its done I commute 7 minutes home. I'm not going to be a victim of a serious crime, and if i'm involved in an accident or take ill, the police will be at my house faster then you could imagine.
how exactly is it worse for me, or better for anyone else?
