Mom dying of cancer hopes for son's visit from Mexico

Her son, in tearful calls to relatives, echoes that wish: "Can I see mamá?"

Martinez, 31, of Wyandanch, has an aggressive form of colon cancer. She is in Stony Brook University Medical Center, barely able to speak.

Her son Irvin, 13, is in a mountainous Mexican village. He hasn't seen his mother since she left home five years ago.

"That boy was a great student, but he's too distracted by worry now," said Marta's cousin Rodolfo Diaz Martinez, of Farmingdale.

Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) has asked the Department of Homeland Security to grant Irvin a special humanitarian visa to see his mother. "This a basic matter of humanity," Israel said Friday. "It's a matter of days or even hours."

A spokesman for the Mexican consulate in New York said his government has offered a passport to Irvin.

Marta is the second of seven children. Five years ago, she paid $2,000 to immigrant smugglers who took her across the Texas-Mexico border and then to Long Island, her brother and cousin said.

"My sister came here because she had no money for her son's books and clothes," said younger brother Jesus, who also emigrated.

Marta worked for a company that makes paper products. On a Wyandanch street, she met Juan Martinez, an immigrant from the same village.

"She has such a strong character that you're impressed right away," Juan said. They married and in 2008 they had a daughter, Damaris.

During a checkup just over a year ago, doctors found that Marta had cancer.

Marta's brother knows that some may have no sympathy for anyone who entered the country illegally. "My sister didn't come here to be sick and be a burden on a hospital," Jesus said. "She came here to be productive and make a better life for her boy."

Her relatives say they don't want handouts - just a two-week visa for Irvin.

"Yes, she made a mistake by coming here without permission," Israel said. "But will denying her deathbed request really be justice?"

I am in a position to know about a lot of illegal alien women and their illegal children. In one case I know of the illegal mom and her two illegal children have been here awhile. Now, mom has hit the lottery she has given birth to a US citizen. So of course the family gets food stamps, a grant for the US citizen, and Medicaid for the US citizen. Mom works in some sort of a factory and gets to keep all that money because it is off the books. Now Mom has been diagnosed with breast cancer and she has had all her treatments, surgeries, counseling, and hospitalizations for free. Over $100,000 in free medical care. She got free baby sitters and camp for the kids including the illegal kids from Social Services. Now Mom is suing to get free plastic surgery to reconstruct her breast. So far the plastic surgery has been denied because it is not Emergency Medical Care.

Now if I went to Mexico, would I be treated the same way? Would I get free medical care and baby sitters for my children?

Steve Israel is crazy allowing the child into the country because he will never leave and cost the US taxpayers money that we don' t have. Stop this insanity!

Silly me. I wasn't thinking of going to Jamaica without a passport and declairing what my intentioins were.
I'm glad the boy got to see his mother. It wasn't the boy's fault and we should have compassion for him. On the other hand, the mother could have returned to be with her son numerous times and chose not to. The boy should be returned to his country after the funeral. This would send a terrible precident if we don't.

The reason these jobs pay so low in the first place is the existance of day laborers, you knucklehead. If they didn't exist, employers would be forced to pay competitive wages and Americans would work them. Especially now in the current job market crunch. I know a contractor who went out of business because he refused to hire illegals. He couldn't compete with the cut rates of those that did. He had to lay off his workers and shut down his business. But I guess little facts like that don't concern you and your tired (and false)old wives tales about what Americans will and won't do. Who elected you to speak for what we as Americans will and won't do anyway? Who are you to decide that I need to pay more taxes for people that don't belong here? I'm a little confused. What is a day laborer? Is that politically correct Liberal Leftist speak for "ILLEGAL ALIEN"?
Let's stop calling people who commit crimes "criminals". I'm sure they find that offensive. Instead, lets call them "Morally Challenged." We could start calling jails and correctional facilities "Centers for the Morally Challenged". That way we can also fool citizens into thinking what's lurking in their neighborhoods isn't that bad because it doesn't sound as bad, right? If we change the words we use, the people will never catch on! Brilliant! Let's see. When I was a teenager I did the following:

Landscaped in a cemetery and later on for a company.

Bussed tables at a restaurant. And had to wash dishes.

Worked in a car wash.

Worked in a fast food place.

All for $3.35 an hour.

Get off your asses and put your kids to work. Stop taking them to sports, they are not going to make the pros. Get your kids off the computers and play stations.

Let them learn responsibility and the value of a dollar.

And help put illegals out of work. Fine those who hire them.

Yeah especially all those illegal Polish, Irish, German, British and Russians who are costing Suffolk millions of dollars in tax revenue since they all work off the books, you should be taking to the streets and go door to door in Copaigue, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Babylon, Melvile, smithtown and all the other mostly white neighborhoods I bet you'll find a large percentage of those illegals/criminals in those locations.

Seems the ones Pedro mentioned don't do the things you recalled, and most 'hiring halls' were not built for the European illegals. Farmingville wasn't decimated by illegal Europeans, either.
