View Full Version : Where are the Volunteer Exemptions?

02-03-2005, 08:54 PM
Why is it that some of the School Boards will not give the Volunteer Exemptions that were approved by both the State and County to the Ambulance and Fire Volunteers? The School Boards know how to come to the mass numbers of volunteers when they want to get elected or pass a school budget, but forget about us when it time to repay the favor.

If your district has OK'd it, let us know - if they didn't we should know that information too.

We did it

Longwood approved it and not only that, the Longwood district includes Five different fire districts, Coram Ridge, Middle Island, Gordon Heights and Yaphank, yet there are smaller one fire dpertment school districts that refuse to allow it. How embarrasing is that?

West Islip Schools refused to address the issue the School board is an embarrassment.....Quote via the West Islip School board if they would allow the Volunteer Exemptions then it wouldn't be fair to the rest of the Taxpayers.....Anything to do with the Fire Department this Board to include some teachers lobby against. "I could go on"The next School board election will prove to broaden thier horizons.

As a taxpayer who is not qualified for any exemption, (military, Senior, Volunteer) I resent having my taxes raised to subsidize those who get these various exemptions for whatever reason.

Your school board probably learned with the seniors exemptions that there are a LOT of seniors paying 1/2 taxes and that adds a LOT to the rest of the remaining taxpayer's bills.

Thank you for volunteering, but please do not expect everyone else to have to help you foot your bills or subsidize you for doing so. You pay what I pay for milk, automobiles, and movies. Why shouldn't you pay full taxes as well?

big mouth ?

think before you open your mouth why dont you ask why you big jerk

02-04-2005, 10:57 PM
See what will happen to your taxes when we DON'T volunteer and you need to have full time 24/7 paid fire and ambulance protection!!! Add up the cost of salaries, medical and pension benefits. You have nothing to resent. Smarten up.

i think it will help the firemen

02-06-2005, 10:45 AM
The firemen will hold us hostage. We have no choice. Remember the Harry Chapin song? Let em sweat for a while. And besides I just shined the chrome.

Pull out your wallet if you're not a fireman. NYS just figured out another way to tax you and blame it on your school district. They love that stuff up in Albany.

Smarten up.Couldn't have said it better you are so right but you can't tell these people anything.Because they are always right so pull your head out of your A$$ and get it together.....Hey I have a Suggestion why don't you call a School board member the next time you need an ambulance or a Fire Truck......Also if you resent the Exemptions then get of your collective A$$ and join the the community in Volunteering .If you can't is it because your out working to pay your tax bill......Good! thank you for your contribution........

Hey Gadfly thanks for confirming that firemen are prepared to hold their communities hostage. The funniest part of your tirade is pretending that school board members aren't volunteering for the community every bit as much as you are. LOL. Hey, next time you need a school budget why not drop by the Lindenhurst firehall! Next time you need chaperones for your kids field trip go ahead and call the ambulance squad. And of course the PTA will be happy to put out your fire. Come on now.

stop it 2005
02-08-2005, 01:24 PM
its a good thing for the firemen and rescue people and taxpayersso all of you grow up

02-08-2005, 05:08 PM
Just got my new tax bill Lets see School district $4848 Fire Dist $188 . Whos screwing the taxpayers? Men and Women who volunteer or the teachers unions sucking us dry? Smarten up people!

02-08-2005, 05:54 PM
No doubt, but the firemen's windfall rebate will inflate everyone else's SCHOOL tax bill, not their FIRE DISTRICT tax bill. Just like STAR. That's all I'm saying.

02-08-2005, 07:33 PM
What inflates your school taxes are greedy admin and teacher unions getting two and three times the cost of living raises. Maybe its time to do away with funding schools through a property tax and go to an income tax. If everyone in the community supposedly benifits then everyone should pay not just homeowners. Same for fd pd library etc.... go ahead fire away!!

I'm all for it except:

I'd love it if the public had the opportunity to vote on changing the funding for schools from property taxes to income taxes, except...
NO seniors will get to vote on the proposal.

You see, it's those greedy, self-serving, (richest demographic in the county) seniors who are crying poverty and screaming for "school tax reform" conveniently AFTER their own kids have had the world thrown at their feet. Now we're stuck with the schools with 2 and 3 gymnasiums THEY voted for. We're stuck with teachers contracts which have increased exponentially because they never voted a budget down in their lives.

Why do seniors and Vets who only pay half taxes even get to vote on school budgets?

Let's get the idea out of our heads that "seniors" = crippled, immobile helpless waifs who can't answer a phone before 15 rings and are chowing down on Alpo and Friskies 4 nights a week, and cutting thie pills in half to make them last longer.

MOST Long Island seniors have bankrolls filled with cash, IRA's and Mutual funds coming out of their ears, and drive Lexus's, BMW's and Infinities. Take a look at golf courses and marinas during the day and they're chock full of "Long Island's poor, poor seniors."

I can tell you that this system needs improvements just like anything else.I would standby at sports events with the Ambulance. So tell us what you have done now let's put this in prospective...A School board member spends what $6000.00 to be elected to non-paying Job! Moron Wake up, smell the coffee. But don't you make the Firefighters the problem. This is why so many people in this community are so stupid. This community is so good but all it takes is some AHole like you to bring about all of the problems that we have today because you don't understand the issues. So I suggest you shut up already..

I can't hear you! Where did you go, how come you don't have anything to say. Did you make an A$$ of your self don't go away mad just go away. Or is somebody holding you against your will if this is so, you should dial 911 maybe your local Fire Department will respond being the cops are being cut back. This is a paid service Law enforcement . Look how they are being treated. What would happen if the Fire Service went paid how would we afford to live on Long Island......Because Unions will go binding arbitration . We will not have control over the Negotiations. If you think you would be able to control spending The PBA will castrate the person making this or any attempt to change. The way they deport them self. The PBA is a force to be reckoned with .....

I am a volunteer firefighter here in Suffolk County. I volunteered...period. I have not asked for this exemption (Which will save me about $800.00 a year) I did not ask for the Lenght of Service Award Plan we have (Which will pay me $800.00 per month), I did not ask for the $20,000.00 in life insurance my Department has taken out for me, I do not go to the Yearly Dinner my Department spends $60,000.00 on...should I go on?

I joined (volunteered) because I like it! Don't give me anything!!!

Because I get up in the middle of the night to give YOU a FREE ambulance ride to the hospital for something you shouldhave gone to the doctor for weeks ago;because you'll call me to leave my dinner to protect you when wires are down in your yard; or pump out your basement or anything else for free you can get us to do for you. We like helping people in need. Now driving to and from the firehouse for calls cost me $2.95 a gallon too. In my dept thats about 600 times a year (my percent of calls).
Try paying ambulance service-$350.00 per ride or a tax rate that can really scare you. Plus, no offense, you don't risk your life to save mine. Buy less fast food. The big discount here cost you maybe 20 dollars a year to have 24 hr 7 day free 911 response. Get a grip.
