Most western Suffolk districts face the same problems re immigration and housing issues...what makes our concerns stand out is the posture of the Kaden/Keen board.

The reason we are down so many dept chairs is lack of leadership at the top. Illegal immigration and special needs kids are part of the problem, but we are not alone in that issue. Other districts cope with that fine. Rent a SCOPE admin costs $300- $400 A DAY!
Spec Ed, Music and Arts, For. Lang and now Social Studies chair are out the door. Why? They are disgusted with this admin.
The school board can only take part of the blame, the real blame is on the Supe and asst supes that have taken us down this path for too long. With 6 figure salaries, they are all entrenched. The only way to bring back our once great district is to have a fundamental overall change in leadership with an admin that actualy CARES about kids....

Daddy owns West Hills Day Camp next door and uses Whitman property for bus detail in the summer.
GEMS Daycare is left over from SHSD daycare, mostly SH kids.

I was told about this site the other day and quite frankly,I am very suspicious about many posters but more suspicious that much of what is said is truth.Knowing the Gersh family for many years I suspect there is probably under the table dealings going on because that is how they work and to find they may be getting favorable rental costs at the expense of the taxpayers is quite disturbing.In a perfect world the Kaden's and the Dillon's would move on since their kids are graduated but inability to relinquish power may be a reason.I for one,am voting against him.It is...time for a change...but these young guns? One of the ways that the South Huntington Board of Education has limited the field of candidates for board positions is the nice trick of the informational meeting. This is the time where all the potential candidates all get "informed" about the board process. Somehow the time commitment question gets introduced.

Wow...how many hours a week? 10? 20? A million? Who would do such a job? Somehow our saintly board manges to carry the burden! The lengths some folks will go to ensure that their kids get the best teachers and that the $$$ goes to fund their concerns.

Maybe if the board hired honest, hardworking and caring people to run the schools and LET THEM DO THEIR JOBS, this might not take as many hours.

Pat Dillon and your your PTA Mom ID's, spare us the sob story of how hard you all work. It does take a long time to make up reasons to drive out bright and independant school leaders, I'm sure.

I am a Whitman teacher. Geoff Touretz was given an impossible hand by Shea and the board. Teachers were taken off hall duty to cover study halls creeated by a board that decided that there was not enough money to provide electives in a 9 period school day. Security was taken out of the building a placed on the perimeter by DO. There is and were gang issues in the Station that were unaddressed at that time by the police.

I think the naysayers on this board better take a hard look at where your district is heading.

All this means much higher taxes coming from your ownership of property.

After reviewing the report I would not move here for the schools thats for sure.

Herein lies the biggest obstacle facing the district: For over 14 years the town of Huntington has made it easy for these newly arrived immigrants both legal and illegal to live in the town. Most of our neighborhoods are older and well established and pretty much developed out. So the town, run by businessmen/politicians downzoned many areas of the town which includes our whole school district. Our zoning laws weren't enforced despite pleas from average citizens and school district personnel.

Slumlords from major corporations to real estate brokers to just the average speculator moved in. Developers razed one house and put up two or three with accessory apartments. Taxes stay the same for a house which adds another dwelling. This is a Huntington Town policy which is most corrupt. Carters get their special tax for gathering more garbage from houses with extra dwellings why not for police and school districts to? Other Long Island towns collect taxes on extra dwellings added to a house so why not Huntington?

Guess who makes up the slack? The single family one dwelling homeowner who doesn't rent out any part of his house for profit.
Our town zoning board is a joke. Variances for all types of dwellings have been allowed increasing the population of kids and adults but shrinking the tax base for government services like schools and police.

But the slumlords make a obscene profit. They also rent to the large immigrant population which costs the most to educate and also who most government services are spent on such as police, health care, education, housing etc. You think the slumlords want to pay any higher taxes? Absolutely not. They rather have the hardworking middleclass taxpayers of South Huntington and Huntington school districts pay the extra costs.

And what really hurts is our present Huntington Town Board agrees. So do you really think the system isn't corrupt?

This happens all the time in many areas of Huntington. One of the main reason many people are pushing for councilmanic districts.

Housing laws whether enforced or lack of enforcement effects the way we live. The way houses and dwellings are assessed effects the way we live.

In Huntington and in Huntington Station housing is in shambles. If you complain you get nowhere. The only ones who have any clout are the slumlords, immigrants, real estate interests, local government/politicians and all people who make a profit from deteriorating housing conditions.

It's about time the Board showed numbers to see how much programs cost and how much money is involved in certain areas. It will make us support the budget just as much. I've lived here awhile. Raising a family here isn't easy. Why is it the town isn't taken more to task? The town says how great in shape they are in but the public never sees it. Neither does the schools.

'04, they are no friends of mine. I noticed how you ignored all the other things I mentioned. Touretz knew peoples' names? He let students do whatever they wanted to do. Discipline was at an all time low; students did whatever they wanted because they knew they wouldn't be held accountable for their actions. Sure you loved him, what kid wouldn't love the candy store owner who let the kids have all the sweets they wanted? Someday you'll be mature enough to understand (no insult intended).

My son was one of the "bad kids" and he wouldn't have made it out of high school and into life without the help of Mr. Touretz. How dare you or anyone else paint this picture of the man. He spent time knowing ALL the kids at Whitman and my son and my family owe the world to him.

Why do you think hundreds attended the board meetings last Spring? You accuse him of hiding in his office? Are you crazy? He was in the halls, as he always had been. He was, as always, at every after school activity, scout installation, and never.....never a word of rancor as his world was torn apart. My daughter is still at Whitman and she was there last year too. The students would have torn that building down, but Mr. Touretz didn't let it happen. He would not let anyone or any cause disrupt the school.

My husband works in the NYC. Let's not even talk about how Mr Touretz held Whitman together during 9/11. He hired scores of wonderful teachers, turned over the whole faculty. He created ways to reward student achievement that will be continued hopefully forever. He celebrated the Arts.

This isn't and never was about Touretz against Polansky. Touretz hired Polansky, groomed him to be a principal.

You just don't treat a good man that way. All the kids appreciated the compassion and caring of Mr. Touretz. My children were better for having known him.

If I have a choice in this board election, I'd like to bring in someone new, someone who is honest and forthright.

Something coercive, something shifty, something wrong drove Mr. Touretz, Mr. Mergen and Mr. Fleischer from South Huntington. Something is making retirement a pleasing option for Mrs. D'Addario, Mr. Azrak and others.

He saved many "caucasian" bad kids. The AfricanAmerican community was neglected except for the basketball players that went awry. He saved them. The Spanish students were given free run to form clubs that were based on small versions of gangs and whose members consistently abused their favored standing yet went unchecked. Pep rallys became multi-cultural events laced with ineligible and incorrigable students. The Talent Show became "Night at the Appolo", with white students being booed by African American students AND parents.

Polansky has turned it around. Yes, you all admit that it's not a Polansky vs. Touretz thing, but it is. How else can you explain the atmosphere in the school, and the amount of supensions this year. Bottom line is that your beloved Mr. T IS a good man with a big heart, but he punched out at 3:30. His ideas were progressive, but they were more suited for a college campus. He celebrated the arts, because it was politically correct to do so. He knew the PTA was a solid political base that would lobby for him (which they continue to do) in the event of calamity. They did and continue to do so.

Your response is typical of a parent that lost control of their kid and needed the loving touch of an ultra-liberal educator. Someone who would give him chance after chance to gain the ultimate diploma regardless of how many frustrated teachers lay in your wake.

I cannot respond to all of your accolades about Touretz except for the ones above. After he got tenure, Touretz hid in his office. He wanted out of the school as evidenced by his application to Port Washington. He effectively became an empty suit as someone else claimed. When he did surface, he would walk down the hallway and ignore flagrant infractions of school rules. He stopped the students from tearing the building down? It was because of his hands-off policies and the undermining of the faculty that the school was in danger and I mean danger. One of the students who was arrested at the near riot, had been allowed to return to school countless times because of the wimpy Touretz policies. Suspensions were revoked almost as soon as they were given because of Touretz. For whatever reason, Touretz was an ineffectual principal. A test of a man's character is what he does under fire. In that respect he failed. First and foremost is the safety of the students and their welfare, Mr. Touretz placed himself above those he should have cared for. You don't believe me ask the teachers who were frustrated by him, teachers who had seen what a real principal should be and how the school was in the process of being destroyed. The new teachers were the ones who owed their potential tenure to Touretz and admittedly he alienated the experienced teachers; a very grave and ignorant mistake. The new teachers had no idea what the school was in the past and what it had become. Answer me this question, why did so many teachers leave Whitman? It was because they didn't want to teach in a school where they could be insulted, cursed at, threatened and had no recourse simply because Touretz would not support them and took the word of the student over the teachers and EVEN his fellow administrators. The two department chairs are retiring because it is economically sound for them to do so. Please, only speak about that which you know. You only saw the Touretz facade, you could not see what was behind it because there wasn't anything.

Good meeting, nothing accomplished except some PTA moms crying about start times and one guy who still thinks AP's should go because that's what they do in Plainview.

We are such a similar district.

Let's see, they have virtually no poverty base, a strong middle east community with solid family values, an upper middle class population that lobbys for special ed services and will never see them cut.

They will go on the honor system before they'd let their kid not get services. Their taxes are 20% higher than ours and going higher. It's a lost district that used to be a jewel. Leaving Gangs Behind

Sherry Glatzer, 45, was born on Long Island and spent her childhood in Hauppauge. Twenty years ago, she moved to Huntington Station. But the safe, family-friendly Island of her childhood seems to have vanished, she said.
"We had a crack house up the street from us, and I didn't consider where we lived a bad neighborhood," Ms. Glatzer said. "Years ago when I grew up, nobody locked a door. You didn't have to. Nobody needed a key. Now I can't let my kids play out in front of the house unless I watch them. The crime is ridiculous."
In early March, Ms. Glatzer quit her six-figure job as a vice president of a financial services company on Wall Street. With her husband, Charles, 47, a photographer, and her 11-year-old daughter Haley, Ms. Glatzer settled in Hendersonville, N.C., outside Asheville, where her father, Ed Young, had relocated from Medford in 2003.
"It's sad what is happening up there," Ms. Glatzer said in a telephone interview. "I feel like I was forced to leave."
Ms. Glatzer said that when they lived in Huntington Station, she worried about sending Haley to Walt Whitman High School.
"The gang violence there has gotten out of control," she said. "It'll only be a few years until they put the metal detectors on the doors."

Think of all of the worst teachers that you or your children have ever had.....They remain in their jobs despite 3020A provisions, the removal of tenure.

In fact, they were never brought up on charges because this provision is not to be used for who you don't like, who you're tired of or who seems to be doing a job less well than you might like.

It is not for the mean spirited or those with poor community skills. It is used only as a last resort for those who have been supervised properly and have had job improvement plans and corrective measures in place...and only if those individuals have ignored those measures and it is used for those who commit illegal or immoral acts in schools. That is why it carries such high stigma and that is why you hardly ever hear of it.

There are many reasons to not like Dr. Lack and the job she's done, but there are no ethical reasons why 3020A charges should be used to leverage her resignation. She has operated under the direction of several superintendents. Shea may be gutless enough to try to throw her to the wolves. Hey anyone better than him, right? I doubt her file is full of poor evaluations, if any exist at all.

Using charges or the threat thereof without a formal actual case is wrong and it is dishonest. YoungBlood or Old, it is dirty and shameful.

And it is at least the second time that the board has chosen to disengage from a tenured staff member in this way during the Kaden era!

At last night’s Board of Education meeting, the Board made the following decisions:

School hours will remain the same next year at all school buildings. Options A, B, and C have been dropped....Why did they waste our time and dollars on the mailings?

Silas Wood Guidance Counselor will remain in the budget.Duh!

Districtwide .5 Psychologist and .5 Social Worker will remain in the budget.

The Supervisor of Music & Art will remain in the budget as one position....even though we cannot find an acceptable candidate.

The Board also decided to allow an employee to continue to spew his hate and venom upon the students,staff and residents while knowing the district has spent tens of thousands of taxpayers dollars in attorney fees and man hours protecting his foundless and inaccurate accusations.

There seem to be several reasons to move off Long Island, with high taxes and traffic being at the top of the list, but I was distressed to read one woman's comments regarding gang violence being "out of control" at Walt Whitman High School.

As a 20-year resident of Huntington Station and a mother with a sophomore attending Whitman, I disagree with that assessment. I'm sure there are students at the school who are members of gangs, as most schools on the island (and elsewhere) have such students, but that is a non-issue in the classes and hallways at Whitman. Walt Whitman High School is a diverse, thriving, wonderful, caring school community.

My husband and I may indeed move off Long Island one day, but it will be because of high taxes and traffic, not misconceived notions of my community.

1- Property values fall through the roof? What in GOD's earth are ya smoking? Housing properties even in the Station have soared these last couple of years. Real Estate agents steer white people away from South Huntington? Ya got proof? If they are it's illegal. But if they are how can you blame the school board for that? Try blaming the town board and the real estate brokers who are licensed by NY State.

2- I at least know Brennan was concerned about the impact of housing and quality of life issues in a community and it's effect on the local school district.

3- Again Ya got proof about scandals or just hearsay and rumor? If you do then it's your responsibility to give the information over to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. If you don't, then stop spreading vicious rumors.

4- Young teachers leaving because of a contract dispute? In the public school system any teacher who would leave the profession over a contract dispute isn't qualified to teach. The teacher contracts which would also include their pension funds are among the highest payouts in the country. If any trust was broken it was by the teachers unions who have aligned with one major political party "Democrats" and support left wing causes and big government. Hence the raising of our school and property taxes every year.

5- Gangs in South Huntington schools can be directly related to the increase of slumlords and speculators who will rent to anyone to make obscene profits. Most accessory apartments and illegal dwellings are in your district. This town problem was never addressed in a thoughtful and honest way by our local politicians. Plus the town officials steer all section 8 housing into your district, steer all the illegal aliens into your district, steer most of the group homes into your school district, steer most minorities into your school district( which by the way is illegal under federal law ) and yes in Huntington Station at least one real estate broker and possibly more are getting taxpayer HUD funding to house illegal aliens and some are gang members and even pedophiles and other convicted convicts. The teachers union never complains about that and it's effect on the district and it's children. I want a school board that understands that a school district is directly attached to the community they serve. And if inept or corrupt housing practices by local or state governments is allowed to go on in a community then the school district in that community will also falter.

Jim Kaden has the expertise and knowledge and love of community to lead the school board through these turbulent times.

Hi. This is my third year attending Whitman, and I've just come across this website. I was going to get involved and go to any public meetings etc, but that was before I read this thread. It is called on the job harassment. Anyone who works with and knows this individual knows it is nothing more than intimidation and retaliation for having done the right thing, an unpopular move in this day and age.

heard some Board members in Huntington school District want to ignore the Town government's effect on school districts

but as I have just learned one of the leaders on that board also owns many fast food franchises which has helped her family to be rich

most if not nearly all her workers are immigrants and many may be illegal

can that be true in our district as well, that board members have conflict of interests with their businesses and relations to town government :?:

Why are people so in denial. Gang crisis was not started by school officials.

Gangs came when the town made it easier for people to live in illegal dwellings.

There was not enough affordable housing even for the natives so when immigration soared the town gave the slumlords and other landlords free reign in Huntington Station.

If you don't think so go get the data on 28 West Hills Road. All lawyers in that case foiled. It was outrageous what the town did to let a millionaire on his yacht in Florida make thousands of dollars a month from illegal immigrants.

And they had to live in squalor that the town knew was there. Repeat this scenario a few thousand times and you have Huntington Station and the South Huntington School District :twisted:

I just got home from the night shift at Whitman to post this just so eveyone can be aware of what might be going on. This guy thinks I'm his freind, but the truth is, I'm afraid of him. He spends most of his time putting up cameras, but I saw a screen on a TV he set up that looked like a girls bathroom that I clean. What is this guy up to now? I'm sure anyone that posts good thing about him is him putting them up to it, or him himself. I am so thankfull that my girls dont go to Whitman but I think I'm even more happy that he only works at night so its not too scary for too many people. Maybe now that he's suing the district, they will say enough is enough and finaly get rid of him.
